It's a flatfish so bound to be.
Actually it was a few years ago when I used to hunt conger, lobster, crab and wrasse in holes. A bycatch was the odd big topnot and a few big rocklings. Now a days I seldon do this sort of diving and when I do I only take the lobster and crab and occasional wrasse. I leave the rest of the others in peace.
If you see a real biggy it's always worth trying be it wrasse, topnot, mullet, gurnard, dogfish or whatever. Far too much snobbery in spearing and fish eating in general IMHO.

Yes I quite agree anout the pickyness with spearing what fish! Do you have any recipe's for a nice 4.5 lbs Wrasse? O r best ways to cook them?

Hi spearos drive yesterday morning to ringsted ,bud waves and strong winds push as to drive to only chesil cove to shelter from e winds,water still 13 deg,bud viz about 8 m.
Loots of small pollock sand eeals and bait fish with scares on them bass hunting .sow only one decent bass bud unfortunate miss the shoot lol.
Shoot my first (john dorry, 38.5 cm -- 1lb. 11oz ) that was worth drive 4h from london .
Meet FISHFOX on the way out ,good to see loots of spearos, hope you get some silver monster yesterday.

As long as they're legally big enough, and as long as you are eating and enjoying them, surely that is all that matters!

Had a pleasant dive with Jim, Tim and Jim’s mate Barry today down in the harbour.
Vis wasn’t that special and not a lot seen except for the Harbour Master who very politely gave us a bo**ocking for spearing the new inner harbour walls. Ended up with a long swim back to the entry point with the master looking on to make sure we got out without breaking any more of his rules.
Barry met a guy that was just on his way in at Castle Town, said he’d had a small bass up at the Bill and was going in for a few Scallops before he went home, well whoever you were there’s a lot of Very Small Scallops down there so I hope you picked out the bigger ones and left the tiddlers to grow on a bit.
Hope the conditions clear up a bit for next week gents.

Had a session near the cove on Friday evening (050609). Got in South of Tar rocks and spent a very pleasant couple of hours pottering around towards the cove. Visibility was excellent 8-10 metres, temp' 14 degrees C', lots of bait fish, pollack and wrasse, but no bass, or mullet seen. The sea was thick with small spherical jelly fish.
Repeated the same dive late afternoon on Saturday, same detail on the fish front, though slightly less visibility and no jelly fish around.
I saw lots of beautifully coloured wrasse, apart from some enormous ballan wrasse I really enjoyed playing with some of the smaller and brightly coloured cuckoo and goldsinny wrasse, they are just as curious as we are!
Despite leaving with no fish I thoroughly enjoyed each dive, the area around Tar Rocks is really interesting. My depth and bottom times are slowly getting better, but I experienced difficulty equalising my right ear below 9 metres. Looking forward to Vobster and improving this.

Keep one eye on the swell folks.

Hi Podge,
It was I that met Barry & yes I have a measure & my wife will only eat the big ones (Scallops). I found 13 however it took me an hour. The good ones are diggin deeper or have been taken already.
