Hey everyone,

I am new to freedive training (beginners forum...) I seem to have a very poor apnea walk time. Only about 45 seconds. I do this whenever I am just walking around: walk and ventilate keep walking and hold for 45 seconds. I have been happy with static apnea (5:05 yesterday). It doesn't seem like walking should make that much of a difference? What are some good exercises to train for dynamic apnea. (I am doing apnea walks because my local pool isn't open yet). My dynamic no fins pb was a hair over 50 yards last year just playing in the pool no training. Just seems weird my walks are so poor. Should I focus on cardio work? more apnea walks? different walks?

Thanks so much for helping me out.

Kris

I had made an extensive post, but somehow my connection was lost and consequently my post.

I'll try to give a even more condensed version.

Ok, try to list all the factors that would help a dynamic to be great. (Rhythm, relaxation, etc.) When you do your walk, test each factor, to discover their effect on you.

Another experiment you can is to wait for some contractions before you slowly get up and start walking. Do not walk briskly, but fluidly. In one rhythm, relaxing everything you don't use. You can count your steps, to have some focus on the now, not on some measure that triggers you comparing our current effort with a previous one.

Keep in mind that before and when you walking you should try keep your circulation low, allowing less oxygenation of the limbs and their muscles.

Dont just do random breath held walks. Try sitting and breathing for 2 minutes, Then breathold for 30 seconds whilst sat, then stand up and walk whilst maintaining breatholding , walk only until the beginning of the struggle phase. Walk back to the chair and repeat the above, but walk to almost max. Walk back to the chair and whilst sat, breathold for 60 seconds, then get up and walk further than the first two. Repeat the 60 sec breathold and walk until point of collapse. Excercise over after 4 walks. Repeat a couple days later, but experiment with speed of walk to get max distance. Also record the time you walk for and compare the times and distances with your dynamics.

Question: What are some good exercises to train for dynamic apnea? In pool definitely longer dives without any warm up. Try do one max for the beginning of your training or lets say 4 times longer dives of about 75% of your max with about 3 minutes of rest between. This kind of training could be implied to walk as well.

Try scanning your body, find where you feel tension and focus to be relaxed as much as possible. And do some technique training even with snorkel on a surface for the rest of your training. Try different speed and find the best what will suit you. Cardio is good, but competitive athletes usually don't do any activities raising your heart rate one moth before competition. They do just max dives and technique.

Thank you all very much. I've been reading the forum a good deal in the last few weeks but hadn't checked my post! I have switched to no warm-up max attempts and focusing on body position and relaxation in the pool. With a spotter! Adding a 1.5 lb neck weight has made an incredible difference. I think I will need about double that weight in the end.

I will start more concentrated apnea walking and stair workouts soon. Focusing on relaxing areas of tension is a great idea. I will keep that in mind during all of my workouts. Interesting how something so simple can be overlooked.

What a fantastic sport. I just wish there were competitions here in Vermont.

Keep in mind that before and when you walking you should try keep your circulation low, allowing less oxygenation of the limbs and their muscles.

Any suggestions on lowering heart rate? I find that even relaxing in bed doing statics my heart doesn't seem to get that much slower. Also, once I've fully inhaled I can feel my heart much much stronger in my chest, and it doesn't seem to slow down much at all while doing the tables.

I think signing up for a meet would be good to keep me on track training wise towards a real goal. I would also like to meet others who are training apnea for their wise advice. I speak almost no french, but enough to navigate around the CASM website. do you know anyone in particular I could email to get info about upcoming meets/ how they are run/ what I might need to do?
