There are lots of people who have not got a shot off a FOY, Mullet / flattie comp...
Its not for not wanting a shot either... if I only had a few days of flat weather I'd be in a shot myself!
Well I never thought my fish would win - I was expecting shiny1 to come up with a beautiful fish of some rare species that we just don't get in Dorset waters (to the depths I dive anyway!)
Hopefully this is the first of many, maybe next season I can get one in early or mid way through.
I have seen some big fish this year and had bigger than this fish, but I have been too chuffed and eaten them too quickly to enter though. Lesson learnt this time though!

The Deeper Blue Regional "OMD" spearfishing competitions prize winners will be announced in time for Christmas.
On this coming Sunday, the 18th of December there will be three consecutive polls running so you can vote for .....
The best fish of the year (FOY) winner collects a £200 voucher to spend at the Apnea store.
The best Flatfish in honor of Old Man Dave ... the winner to receive a special trophy hand made by respected forum member Don Paul.
The best Thick lipped mullet, winner to receive a brand new 80cm speargun donated by the Apnea store.
The polls will be run for four days so please make the effort to vote.

What did people vote for and why?
I voted for Shiny's bream, Jonny's plaice and Spearolee's mullet. I must admit that the mullet got my vote almost entirely on it's size but what a magnificent looking fish too.
The bream got my vote because it's a fish I would love to catch but can't
. Of course I would love to catch a bluefin too (you bet!!) but I admire shiny's knack of finding these big bream year after year.
The plaice I just thought was the best flatty and was tried for too. Well done there Jonny.

I went the same except decided to go for the Tuna caus its such a one off, totally agree about the Plaice amazing fish and alot of hours were put in to achieve the catch. If Triggers, Ambers and other such fish show up on the south coast of Ireland is there any chance of Giltheads ??? The Mullet comp was tight so in the end I suppose you go for the biggest and it was a very fat fish.What did people vote for and why?

Giltheads definately do show up. We've had one or two here in West cork alright but they only average around the 2lb mark. I've seen some good shoals of them but they only appear on the marks I know on some years and not on others.
I just wanted to raise this suggestion again, what do people think about a speccie hunt over the year? When will the first fom month be?

Here's a suggestion for something a little different for next year; how about usng the FOM as the FOM, but also for a year long speccie hunt, based on the individuals entries over the year?
It would encourage people to go out and catch a variety of different fish, it would encourage more people to enter the FOM each month, and there would be a bit of fun at the end of the year to see how people fare. I'm sure the technicalities can be worked out...

1) The way I read it is the individual with the most varied catch wins? quality been the deciding factor. Is that right?
2) Take it over the whole year or just the FOM/FOY months?

Hi scott, im no expert in how the speecie hunt angling comps are run, but i figured if we used the hall of fame max fish size as 100% and catches would then be a percentage of that. Totalling the percentages for various entries throughout the year may add up to a few hundred percent. The winner would be the person with the most percent in total.
For eaxmple, if in march we start and Mr Spearo enters a 5lb mullet then he gets roughly 50%. If he enters the next month with a 11lb bass then he would be doing very well, with 150% so far. If he then doesnt enter any further results, but Mrs Spearo enters various fish throughout the year in each fom, and totals more %, then She would win.
One criteria would be that only one fish of a species, i.e. One bass, one mullet, etc could count towards the percentges.
The fish of the month/year would still stand of course.

I like Jonny's suggestion and that would seem fair and highlight dedication of the individual.
However, additionally lets say someone is keen to home in on the species hunt, and pops up with say a large Dentex or 30lb cod, I would like to see that individual fish held up if it were to be a Fish of the Month/Year.
So possibly the two pronged approach for the year...and it truly would be prestigious to take both Spearo of the Year as well as Fish of the year.
