ok, here's another attempt. The lbs weights are lbs decimal, not lbs and oz [i cant do that on a spreadsheet!]. The weights are just my suggestions, open to changes...
Have i missed any? what do you think about including tope/shark/porbeagle?

Hi Jonny, I think the weights are fine in kilos, but suggest a couple are lowered slightly
Bass - min weight 2.5kg
Pollack min wt 2kg
Suggest include Small eyed ray min weight 3.5kg 100% 5kg
Also like the idea of mackerel- there are hard to hit and taste good!
Suggest min weight 0.5 kg and max 0.75kg
I agree shld exclude salmon, sea trout, tope/shark etc

All said and done, I am mindful of the plain old simple OMD 'Fish' of the month moving onto 'Fish' of the year.
I am enjoying reading the out of the box thinking and planning for some separate species hunt/spearo league table.
However, I cant help but wonder whether Dave would be that bothered with all the complication weighed up against the just go and get in the water and dive the lucky dip adventure.

Well I know for sure Dave would of liked to see individual competitions based on a specimen format because he posted such on the forum but no idea how he would feel about a changing over from the FOM to a specimen hunt over a year period?
Anyhow keep the ideas coming & the suggestions, we can always have a vote to see how everyone feels in a few weeks?
Ref the KG v LB as we have already discussed & agreed on lbs for the FOM & HOF I think it would be best to stick to lbs for this too.

I cant help but think these Min weights are set to High. A 2.5kg bass is a 5lb+ fish. If they set too high it will mean some spearo's will battle to get going in the comp. We dont all live in area's where 5lb+ bass are common place. I think setting them just a above the legal minimum is the way forward as it gives spearos good chance
Lets summarise a few things ....
FOM (fish of the month) is very popular & as far as I am concerned will be continuing this year as normal.
FOY (fish of the year) will also be happening as usual if possible.
The specimen fish idea is sound in my opinion & if we can get it together can run in conjunction to with the other competition.
However we have limited resources to run any competition as these things take up time & need dedicated staff to make things happen.
Last year we had the FOM, FOY, mullet comp & best flatfish & to be honest that was hard work for the members running the competitions.
Personally I feel that long term, we should be looking towards a change from the FOM to some form of specimen hunt that emphasises the benifits of selective hunting.
However this might take some time to get organises so, lets keep the ideas coming & perhaps try to run some form of specimen hunt this year but keep the FOM running as normal.
Finally, please except that this is only my opinion & do keep your ideas flowing....

I would love to get a FOM or even the elusive FOY! Lets keep these going.
I think local clubs and key individuals could help publicise these challenges and encourage more spearos to get involved.

Encourage ethically acceptable hunting-otherwise watch out for the antis! Keep the rules simple as pos. we try to advocate not shooting a fish greater than 6lb as they are great breeders. A nice 3lb or 4lb bass is good for the table. However the odd time you shoot a bigger one that's no harm... Unless you start going out of your way to hunt only big guys... Soon you damage a local population.
I think this emphasises the difference between shooting fish for the table and joy of diving, and shooting fish for a competition.
in theory a species hunt sounds like a good idea but I can't help thinking that people will get carried away.
Finally, I think mods can set up the thread but I see no reason why an ordinary member can't run the comp?
PS I actually cringed when I saw shark and ray to be included outright... That pretty much explains why I think these sort of comps are bad news ethically and will be bad news for publicity with the general public? There was outrage at a lad in dubai shooting shark and posting pictures here... But not many objections when johnny queried it?

Bob thanks for your post, i think its great to get balanced and varying opinions. Its a good point about shooting fish just for competition, and i fully agree that considered hunting for food is the only way.
As there are likely to be only less than 8 species (max 10) per person, perhaps thats only an occasional biggie, there is no benefit within the SH for one spearo to catch and record more than one species. We could even have a rule that the once a species is entered that is the only one of that species allowed for that spearo?
Ref the shark and ray, the list was only provisional, for people to review, and i can adjust it as people think fit. In practice those species would not be worth many % unless you found a real clonker anyway.

Right then folks, I can offer you an update...
Scott has done a fantastic job looking after the fom/foy and i would like to say a big THANK YOU to him, and also to Dave and the rest of the DB team for their hard work.
This year i have the honour of running the fom/foy, and maybe even a fun SH... and will do my best to live up to the high standard that has been set.
My first question is: Does anyone have the skills and desire to make a set of fom trophies for this year? In the past these have been made by DevonDave and previously by Old Man Dave. They have been excellent. Would anyone like to offer to take this on please? I think we are looking for 8 + maybe foy too?

the trophies have previously been made by Old Man Dave, and then by DevonDave; the one shown below is an example of DevonDaves trophy. Good Job DD!
Really, the competition is more about a bit of fun coinciding with the fact that we hunt fish - rather than being 'about' the prize. So it would be just great if someone felt they could bring their skills to the trophy making table I think that 'anything goes' really [within reason lol].
Each month (March to October inclusive) fish can be entered into the fish of the Month [fom] competition and at the end of the month a poll is posted for people to vote for their favourite entry. There's a few rules but that's about it. The trophy is then sent out by post to the winnner.
We are hoping for some sponsorship for the FOY and maybe FOM in some way, but maybe someone would like to sponsor the trophies too?
