I think its an ancient tradition started by the Aborigenes when they did their ice diving.

Yes - my ancestors here in Michigan used the Didgeridoo to summon the Coelacanths for the winter solstice. According to legend they would meet and agree to dream the world for another year. Now, of course, we rarely see coelacanths in the great lakes so we dream with the carp instead.

I thought that it was just a big ice-sicle.

I stayed at Shawano Lake for a few years (west of Green Bay WI), never occurred to me go under the ice. Videos and pics are great, thanks for sharing!
