Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I think my brother Derek held the British spearfishing record for a smelt, that's the same size as a sand eel.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I got a vote in the June FOM. Wasn't even me voting for myself. So that's one more vote than I got last month. The sole is leading. Mmmmm!!! flatfish season soon.

Dave.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I got a vote too, but I'd just like to declare from the outset that it wasn't me!

Seriously though, I can't see how anyone could vote for my sole when there is another in the competition almost a pound bigger, caught in the same area under similar conditions.

For me it is clearly a two fish race, and I'd rather someone didn't waste a vote on my fish. If you think a sole should win the competition, go for the obviously bigger and better fish!

(Having said all that, I'm not completely ungrateful and would still like to thank the person who put a mark against my fish, for the sympathy vote).

Nuff said.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

I think the main thing I like about the DB FOM is that it is decided by member vote. I originally envisaged the result being by the mathematical % compared to the British record. This is how angling competitions are judged and I'm so glad we didn't do this.

Voting means in theory the voter can take into account the experience of the captor, his report of the catch, the area it was caught in etc., etc., etc.

If I have a disappointment it's that more spearo's don't enter a wider variety and size of fish. After all you gotta be init to winit.

Dave.

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Bobdonny just pointed out that there is no FOM yet posted for July. I don't think it's ever gone this long without an entry. Time to get hunting maybe???

Re: Fish of the month discussion thread 2010

Mate if you can hit a sand eel with a spear I'm definitely going to vote for that, shot of a lifetime.

Regards,
Dave.

i saw a shoal of baitfish last night being attacked by a shoal of sandeel.

i remembered this thread and took a shot at one and got it.... the stringer wouldnt fit into his gills so i put it through the spearhole.

but when i got out the sandeel was gone :( musta come off in the rocks or surf :(

guess im just not meant to be in fom :crutch
