Freediver film controversy?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I do not think the issue is about the story of the movie. The fact is that the movie portrays a governing body that overseas the sport of freediving and does not show it in a very good light. It uses the name of AIDA and also uses peoples actual names (such as Sebastiens) . If I had a company that I had started and spent years trying to build up and make work and then some guy put it on the screen showing it to be a completely the opposite of what it was, and using my name, you bet your life it would end up in court. Nobody has the right to use any organisations name and an individuals name without permission and if they do they are opening themselves up to a huge lawsuit especially if they are shown in a bad way. From what I heard the movie was complete rubbish and hardly anyone outside of the freediving arena will watch it anyway. The story was dull, acting was lame and acuracy of the sport was way off. But from the upside at least its something that promotes the sport ( bad publicity is better than no publicity as they say!) But thats only my opinion.

I find this strange. So does that mean everytime A hollywood film portraits, for instance, FBI doing a major f-up in an investigation, that FBI sues the producer of the film.

Think not.

It is only in journalism one can get a lawsuit for playing around with truth. Or maybe it is different in for instance USA - (but USA is for once not involved in this matter)

Using Sebastiens name might in the same role as in reality might be another issue.

Anyhow seems like emotions has settled and the BIOS event is a GO again.

Sebastian

Finding this thing very amusing - while busy freediving with sharks in Thailand.

You can't use anyones name without permission.
Other than that it was just a real bad movie.
I, for one, found Go's footage and the movie the German team presented much better.
I understand the German presentation will show on TV over there.
I would love to see what reviews it gets.

Not so sure that all the legal scholars crying foul here are on target. For example, Jon Stewart calls Robert Novak "douchebag of freedom" on the Daily Show almost -- um, er -- daily. To the best of my knowledge, the Massengill folks have not gone after him for this.

Apparently, the relevant civil laws are not all that simple to apply -- at least in the U.S.

Let's not forget ferenheit 911... I'm pretty sure micheal moore co-opted a tonne of footage bush would rather not have seen aired in theatres nationwide... no lawsuit there...

Hey, I get some german channels on my cables, does anyone know which channel and what time?
I'm sure I can enjoy it just as well without knowing Deutsch.

The german movie is AWESOME, even though I don't understand german. It made me super nostalgic about cold winter diving adventures (aka 'leaving the world behind 4...')

The German movie was made for Spiegel TV, no idea when it will air.

Perhaps a little late.... On The Big Blue vs The Freediver

Well quite frankly, I think that the deaths of Enzo and Jacques in the Big Blue made more sense compared with the death of Danai in the Freediver.

From a symbolical perspective…

Why doesn’t want Jacques compete with Enzo?

From the start of the competition it is not just that Jacques really fears Enzo as a person to compete with, but he fears for his life. It is quite obvious that Jacques ‘knows’ that the desire from Enzo to win will finally consume him. It is with this knowledge that after each confrontation with Enzo after Jacques records he seemed to act depressed. The symbolical death of Enzo and his flight down the Abyss finally potrays this consument and Enzo’s specific bond with the ocean.

Jacques himself has a different problem… He wants to be something he can’t, to be a dolphin/mermaid. This desire of him is always more important than the whole competition. Every time he is down there, his desire to find the mermaids overtake him from the wish to win the competition. This wish to meet these mermaids his finally his undoing because he loses his touch with reality.

From a practical way…

Well… It is quite clear for those who follow the forum for some time that the CMAS doesn’t like the depth discipline due of its (then believed) risks. CMAS name wasn’t only used in The Big Blue, they even had some influence in it. The ‘medical warning’ surrounding Enzo’s death is the way how the CMAS tried to give the audience the message “Don’t try this crazy sport at home, folks”.

And in the Freediver…

In the Freediver, these things doesn’t play a part of the story. Maggie Stone doesn’t dive for the sea, just to be the best. Even Enzo had a more obvious bond with the sea. And she isn’t punished for that except of by a black-out.

When Danai dies, she isn’t better off than Maggie. At a certain point she chose to follow the doctor in everything, even if she loses Hector for that. That doesn’t make her a heroine either, and her death is nothing more than a senseless waste of life.

Where is the practical / symbolical logic in that? If you want to imitate the Big Blue, you might try to insert some if the thoughts behind the actions. If in doubt, you might want to read otherwise Luc Besson’s book instead (perhaps together with Jacques Mayol book and bio).

Frankly... The Big Blue had some documentarian feeling, but is in reality a quite symbolic movie. The freediver tries to be a symbolic movie, but never get past a documentary.

Hmm... and then talking about German.

I can understand German, and really, you guys miss something! The documentary doesn't only have it great moments with Orca's there is also loads of humor there...

Yep... if there is one documentary of the year 2004, it's is this one! Find a way to see it!

A non-diving acquaintance of mine, watching The Big Blue, found the underwater sequences entrancing but of the rest said: " This is a live cartoon !"

She's right.

The dryland sequences are really very silly and Looney Tunes -like !

The site says it was aired on 30/7... so I guess I missed it.
I also don't know if speigel tv is a channel or a show...
If it's a channel then I don't have it anyway.

@ Deep Thought:
The channel was "VOX".
"Spiegel TV" is a series of documentaries with totally different topics.
Unfortunately I saw only the last part of the documentary, but it was really amazing.
Deeply,
MANUEL

Hmm, I had a bad feeling that this movie would be cheesy... <sigh> well, i did enjoy watching goh's clips..

I would like to come back about movie 'Big Blue' and 'Freediver'. Both of them are 'movie', and movies are movies, not documentary.

Just try to imagine how it could be boring to see a realistic freediving competition in a movie ! With its typical 'church ambiance', no fun, and no comments at all.

But competitions could be interesting for freediver athletes, of course, because they know the sport.

And this was proabely why the freediver athletes didn't like the 'Freediver' movie, because they know it's not realistic.

Unfortunately, public and people who could see (?) the 'Freediver' movie, as it was 16 years ago with 'The Big Blue', don't know freediving and would have a bad representation of freediving and AIDA.

I just only hope that it will be less accidents in pools and water after 'The Freediver' that it was after 'The Big Blue', especialy in France, which created so much difficulties to train and promote our sport later.

Just my thoughts. Sincerely,

Did you see the movie?

It was not only the inrealistic view of freediving that made almost all people in the room puke or laugh, but the combination with the bad acting and a pornmovielike storyline, etc that made it a waste of time. Luckily the Germans brought a very good documentaire with (and they are not paid actors) humor, the edit was good, the footage incrediable.

just my thoughts.....I'm glad we didn't have to pay for the movie.

Pim :duh

It was not only the inrealistic view of freediving ...
I second that!! Trust me, they could have made the diving very unrealistic and at least it would have been interesting and atmospheric. It was extremely boring scenes of diving. They did not present an atmosphere that would be enthraling to anybody, at least above any random person taking a camera below water. Everything, except for the opening scene, which totally reminded everybody of the opening to the Big Blue, was focused on the human element, which was portrayed with aweful soap opera type characters, but worse maturity, if you can imagine.

I very much dislike people discrediting movies because of expectations or stubborn classifications, but if you are unfortunate enough to spend your time watching this movie, I would have a hard time imagining the most indiscrimiative of you actually coming away feeling glad this movie was made.

My opinion.
