Good Spearo HD Camera (UK)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I used to use a Gopro3 a while back then changed to a Sea&sea DX1200HD which is a cracking camera but a bit bulky. Now ive got my eye on the new Gopro2.

The picture quality is unbelievable and the camera's are tiny and bomb proof in those housings. The customer service from the gopro team is second to none, I had a housing leak on me which they replaced no questions asked.
Worth considering if you can raise the £300 price tag :)

I - like many others, I am sure - am very interested in this tiny bullet camera but... it just seems so unlikely to produce quality videos!

However technology is difficult to keep up with & without doubt "if" this device proves to be effective, I will be buying one too.
Keep the post coming artiz..:)

Re keeping up with technology, the 720p quality video is already a couple of years out of date in terms of tech - even my mobile phone records in 1080p which far outstrips the quality of the video already posted.

To be honest though, for £80 - it'll record videos down to 10 meters in decentish quality... that sounds like a bargain to me.

I watch tons of videos on YouTube that look great in even 360 or 480p.

The main issue I'd worry about is how well it copes with low-light conditions - is the sensor going to be big enough to pull in enough light to give a decent image? Especially a few meters down in the murk. If anyone is thinking of buying one, I'd hold off until this is made clear!

Good point Bro. If it cant cope with low light its a waste of money ( much like the gopro3)

Hey artiz. Can u get a housing to take it deeper? 10m seems fairly shallow for a cam. Great little thing but would only get one if there was a housing.
Was looking at the contour roam. 60m housing for only 30 quid!!

Ummmm... wow! Check out this comparison between the GoProHD and the Contour...

Contour is miles better! So much more detail and clarity.

Watched that video bro. It's pretty impressive quality although not as good colour on the contour but I'm sure u can increase the light exposure somehow to sharpen the colour.
I'm sure that promo video has had some editing done somehow.......

sorry didn't mean to come across as overly critical, the gopro is clearly a very good camera. I just thought it was too expensive for what it is and not particularly spearo friendly. Surely a bracket and camera/housing that kind of size will impede gun movement - but as you've pointed out i'm clearly not an expert!
As for the narrow lens angle - it's far more suited to spearfishing than a wide angle which captures lots of the atlantic ocean around the target/fish and also makes it appear further away.
The cameras you mention are very cool but way out of my price range (canon s100 =£450 + housing) and perhaps for a few others too, which is why i posted the info, rather than a cynical attempt to flog kit?
The battery life is cool for me (approx 2hrs). I'm there to catch dinner not making blockbusters?
Lastly, i'd far rather 'lose' or break £86 than £486 due to my inexperience.

got to agree there, i've lost enough kit already, my wife would have a fit if i payed £300 for the gopro only to damage it or lose it. I've gone for the dogcam wide angle at £134 postage included

Thanks for everyone's comments & contributions here, some excellent points have been well made. I'm just back from Cornwall & didn't get the opportunity to test the camera again, for one reason or another (mostly high winds) but I still wanted to respond to some of the points raised.
Firstly - Pembroke, did you not use the promo code - HTDC05 it was 10% off the price you quoted regarding the wide angle model?
I wanted to make a few observations regarding quality. The 720p has been surpassed but Youtube is probably the easiest and most commonly used medium to view our videos and it will only broadcast at 360p/480p so most of the higher end quality is removed anyway? Also the original movies look great (HD) on a 17" laptop and a 32" TV but that's where it may end because I don't have an HD TV. I also get the feeling than any higher quality wouldn't play on my desktop or laptop anyway, due to lack of RAM.
So if you got a bit of scratch (cash) you may not be interested in this lower end camera.
However, if you are looking for a small, unobtrusive way of capturing your catches with a good quality, tough little camera, the bullet cam in all its different forms and costs maybe the way to go.
I also thought that the video comparing the contour and gopro showed just how much empty ocean is captured using wide angle lenses - I want just the fish in my vid/shot???
As for the light issue I think only by underwater testing can we see if the light sensor is good enough so I think caution (as advised by Broseidon) may well be the best policy but the vids I have already posted do show the changing of light conditions from bright window to darkened room and it seems, all things considered, (quality, price & suitability) pretty good for £86.
baldyfish - I haven't come across any housings for bullet cams so it may be worth looking out for those - may be simple enough to make even!
vasile - got to say the contour looks a good investment as well as looking suitable for spearos - what is the maximum depth?
It clearly very much depends on your personal preferences & budget, you may be slightly more interested in underwater photography than dinner on that particular dive and given the wealth I would have a GoPro and a bullet cam for just such an event.
On the other hand, like me you may just want a little vid you can post up on Youtube for posterity and to show family & friends how I actually caught the Bass or Mullet which they have just eaten!
As soon as I have tested in some decent viz I will post again but in the mean time its very helpful to hear everyone's thoughts so please keep them coming in too :D

coupon, i'm gutted i did'nt relize threre was one, still got my toy to play with, i've got it to show family and friends what i see out there as well as spearing the fish, i will post any decent vids on my facebook page

Just watched that GoPro comparision video, it's very misleading. The gopro HD comes with a dome housing which doesn't focus properly underwater. You need to get a third party flat lense to solve the problem then the quality is just as good as the other camera. I've been using a goPro for some time and the only thing about it I don't like is having to look at the front of the cam to check its on. Great camera all round.

The battery life is good, its durable as hell and versatile. I've used it for cliff jumping vids, skating vids, time-lapse vids, all sorts.

Here is a video I shot which shows the quality. The flat lens also reduces the FOV slightly.

-Padaxes This video is absolutely amazing, thanks for sharing. Are you sure this is not your pet seal that you have known since childhood?:D
Your vid certainly dispels some of my fears regarding seals, however my closest encounter with a seal was very different, it swam straight at me with its mouth open and in murky water it was a bit scary to say the least!
Top movie & good viz certainly shows off the GoPro though

-pembroke Any chance you can put up some video for comparison with my dogcam narrow angle tests on previous posts? I will also put up some close-up photos of the home made gun brackets I mentioned which may be suitable for your own gun, but probably dependent on the make?
