Good Spearo HD Camera (UK)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
A bit more info regarding home made gun mounts as promised.
Home-made gun mounts to Arka for BulletCam
The long mount is approximately 270mm long and gives very little gun obscurity but clearly not going to be great in weeds. This one is cut from the meter length 4mm screw I mentioned.
The second size is a 100mm long screw with a flat head and at the moment seems the best length giving optimum gun obscurity and good maneuverability in the water, definitely the best. Also only one flat head screw to tighten when attaching to or removing from the gun.
The third is a 60 mm phillips screw with acceptable gun obscurity but no noticeable difference to moving the gun around underwater and you forget that its actually attached.
Hope this helps pembroke, particularly when you consider how much commercial mounts for cameras actually cost and that they don't seem to be available for bullet type cams anyway?

I've been using a goPro for some time and the only thing about it I don't like is having to look at the front of the cam to check its on. Great camera all round.

-wwc_gang - do you give out those fixed penalties in the photo or have you still got to pay them? :D:(

Yeah you need a bigger case and it reduces battery life, cool bit of kit, but unnecessary vs the small annoyance of checking its on before you dive.

How are you guys getting on with the dogcam. What is the quality like in the water and how long will it record for? Is it worth getting one?

Only just come across this thread.. Like some of you I am slightly put off by the price tag and size of the gopro and similar cameras and had been looking at similar bullet cameras. However my initial thoughts were, mmm battery life may be an issue and I will flood it!
That said I wonder how much they can be 'tweaked' just thinking out loud here but I believe it was mentioned that there is a single o-ring.. is there space for two if not a size up may help increase its depth ability. If not I reckon the whole thing would fit in a old torch housing with a bit of work.. miniq40 or something a bit bigger. A bit of imagination may even see the button activated same way as the light is turned on... mmmm now I am thinking... lol
Also what battery do these use? There is usually a way of upgrading battery life, commercial product rarely use the best power source available due to cost.

Oooo actually I now have a new idea.. identify a cheap excellent performing small small camera that is not available with housing strip it down, upgrade the battery and stick it all in my old beauchat torch. Perhaps even wire up to the torch power switch depending on button config on camera..

Then again maybe I am just a bit mad.

Thanks for your interest jpp. Unfortunately I haven't had an opportunity to test it properly yet - I'm into the last few months of my Phd and the deep blue is a distant memory. Will post results ASAP. I hope Pembroke has got more news tho!

Thanks Artiz Ill await your test results untill I invest in one then.

You don't sound mad to me. Some great ideas here. I'm a big fan of DIY tho. I tried 2 rings on the seal and it leaked in the sink so made sure I didn't do that again. Its a completely sealed unit so you can't actually get at the battery - at least I couldn't.
I wonder if I would get arrested as a pervert if I tested it out in my local swimming pool for 2 hours :D

If the battery lasts two hours what size card would you need to record for two hours?

Good point - 2GB which came with Dogcam was handy but useless. Largest I own is 8GB and I'm guessing that its lightly to cover the full 2 hours - will definitely let you know tho.

YES! :D

As for the two orings, having not seen it its hard to say but i would be considering an extra groove for the second not just on top/next to the original. Or just a slightly thicker ring instead.
Sealed is a pain though, always possible to get in them but may make it less watertight in the process which defeats the purpose!

After jpp's interest I Googled 'review Dogcam 720p' to see if there was any newer info on it and I have to say it does come up short on most reviews - example here
Worth repeating though is that this really is at the lowest end of the underwater...ish HD camera budget - I found nothing cheaper! So it would seem only appropriate for the financially challenged - like me!
P.S. Another thing I did when I tried out was put vasaline on the cap thread before tightening up- seemed a good precaution!

Sorry to go on here but bit of important info I left out from my real life test on Page 3 was that the scallops were definitely around the 10 -12 meter mark and I must have made 15-20 dives, consequently there was a drip of water inside of the cap but no problems with the camera at all.
Presumably the vasaline helped but the o ring seal must be penetrated by the vacuum created when the air inside the camera is compressed - so the tighter the better plus grease of some kind looks good!

Seems a nice camera and competition for the GoPro but we were more interested in info on bullet cams on this thread!

Just a quick call out for any Spearo's in Bangor or North Wales who can send me in the right direction next weekend when staying up in Snowdonia.
I liked the look of the pier and the point... it looked good for Mullet?
Has anyone been there?

... and I was going to try out that camera at last?
