No probs mate, I was just shooting at bits of weed to get used to loading, as it was pretty obvious there wasn't going to be any fish about! No point you hanging around

8 degs eh, getting warmer then at last if only by 1 deg! Give it another 4 months and I might give it another go Got to get me feet used to them fins too.

Gun looks good mate, though won't that trigger guard let line get in and get wrapped around the trigger?

We're a friendly bunch of Guernsey spearo's who welcome new members. Now, about all these rod angling bass spots you must know about?

Actually some of us will drown a worm on occasions. When out in the boat we usually rod fish when not actually spearing. Even do a few trips just to rod fish, especially to bag up on mackerel, after work.

Personally I'm on a crusade to catch a bass off the shore on a surface lure (popper). Got as far as hooking one last year just to see it spit the lure right at my feet. Also had to watch local expert (PC - expect you know who) catch 13 one day while I blanked. :vangry

There are a few newbies to spearing as well as your mate Tom and despite Ed abandoning him last time we usually go easy on them. Learnt my lesson when I took "beginner" Portinfer who then proceeded to give me a pasting. He hasn't stopped since. Well I suppose I am old.

Lots of spare gear between us which you could borrow so give it a go. Once you've got the spearo bug your rods will gather dust. :t

I had a great few days last year float fishing for 'mini-marlin' (gar/longnose) ! Alot of fun and nice cos you could chat without filling the lungs with water

Still have to spear a gar but maybe the new 80cm gun will be the one to nail em this year.

Dave I think you forgot to mention that you were on the same rock with the same rod and reel set up and same plug/popper ... and casting to the same spot Or maybe you erased that from memory

Do recall you and Marco off spearing while I took Lora off to show her how to shore rod fish though. Now Who caught a bass that day? Was it the you and your gun or me and my fishing rod? I forget. :t

Bit of a challenge is a Bass on a surface lure, only had a few myself as I prefer shallow divers. Try Vazon reef at high water off the top of the reef, casting towards Richmond end, Had a few fish come clear out of the water there with shallow divers, biggest on that mark was 7.5lb and he came clear out of the water when he took it. Haven't been there in a while though. Lots of spots round the Houmet paradis area at low water that might produce. Tide rip is pretty fast so you need to cast and reel as the lure comes round.

The funny thing is Andy, the places we fish from the shore are not nessersary any good at all when angling & visa versa. You have not told us if you have actually been spearing, if not you are in for a treat! As my bro pointed out, you now have plenty of friends to help you get underway. You obviously have a head start with you knowledge of Bass.

I've not actually been spearing before, just "watching" as it were. I like the area round L'Eree Shinglebank for snorkelling and I have seen spearos there before when fishing, probably one of you lot!! Seems like a good place to try and there are plenty of fish (Bass, Mullet, Wrasse, Pollack, flatties at low water further out on the sand), not sure how "spearable" they are though!

Well I went Ormering today, not my best catch. Funny thing was I thought I found 4 but when I got home & checked my jacket pocket I had 5! Problem was one was a bit shriveled, must of been in my pocket for 4 weeks :head

Hello all the guys,
Writing at the mo from a springtime italy where Marco, the hunter/gatherer has just launched himself into the world of work, graduating in his family's profession on his birthday the 28th!
Whilst all you guernsey folk were fishing in the deep blue we were biting our nails in an exam studio, and then getting ourselves into conditions in which it would have been impossible to fish! (As Ed remembers the situation of having a hangover in the water!)
Do you know if Fabio's going to guernsey some time soon? we wanted to come desperately but we don't know if we will have time as on the 23rd of april we are leaving on a 6 month (possibly extendable) expedition to a few places, namely india, australia, nz, indonesia, laos, cambodia and marocco!
Ed if you would like to join us somewhere for a quick get away please do...maybe marocco for a quick dip into the ocean, you never know, dentex may be calling!

Lucky you having Spring... here we are due spring tomorrow ... and tomorrow ... and tomorrow.... But then again I guess you had some cold winter this year in Italy.

Glad Marco has a job and you all celebrated by the sounds of it - Fabio came a while back but the weekend was a total non-diving one as it was really stormy. He is a hard man to get hold of since then so am not sure of his movements.

Your trip sounds amazing and I am jealous - I have friends heading off all over the place but this year I am staying here and building/bodging ! Send me a snap of you guys with a Dentex ... sometime I'll make it to Morocco to pick up that Dentex with 'Ed' written on the side

Hi Guys, l live in your sister island and l dived the humps last year.lt`s very good. Just to let you know the Jersey Spearfishing Club is holding a Open International spearfish comp on saturday 24th june `06. Neil from APNEA is holding a silver fish on the sunday 25th june `06.There willbe prizes and trophies in both comps.Hope to see you in june .

Hello Ed,

I am always here, following the thread and dreaming in silence of the Guernsey sea... By the way, I am planning to come over for Easter for a few days. Will you and Dave be around? It would be great to go diving together, as usual.
I came back from Tobago 10 days ago. We spent 7 dasy on the island (very beatiful and unspoilt). Went fishing a few times, caught some barracuda and red snapper. Fishing there was great but I still missed the seabass ...
Is the competion in June open to Italians as well ? Being in a fishing competition has always been my lifetime ambition..
Anyway, hope to see you and catch up with you guys
