Tell you what guys I will be glad when we start catching fish again. I have never had much luck before April myself. Maybe my new suit will encourage me in earlier? This weather has slowed progress on the 2006 dive boat. Still I won't be too negative as YOBO 2 will be ready in time for the main season. I normally have plenty of time off in the summer! & will be diving with a vengeance. Anyone is welcome on board if there is room on the day. You can be sure I will post when there is space. I have plenty of ideas & plans for the coming season. I also love entertaining at the bottom of my garden! Which I have equipped with open fire, barbeque, smoker, heat lamp, table, chairs and tent for those to tired to drive home. Bring your fish I will cook em. Roll on the summer.
P.S. any none Guernsey spearos reading this are welcome too, I have found some good deals on the net.

I have now finished camouflaging my two main guns. To be honest I haven't even fired the Mamba yet! but as there is no apparent sight line, IE you cant use the spear to line up your target, I am now thinking of fitting some form of sight system. I would not be surprised if some cynic out there would criticize my plans. I have read the threads on similar subject's before, but I know my fishing style & terrain & I know what works for me. When spearfishing has been part of you life for 30 + years & you cant get in the water, what do you do, well I play around with my kit! (equipment that is not a small cat) I will keep you posted as soon as I come up with a sight design.:confused:

Excellent! Particularly like the snorkel.

Re. sight ...will you mount it on the side or top? I tend to look down the side ... I think the idea originally came from the Len Jones Book, or perhaps the RA site. The idea is that fish are long & tend to move horiz., so vertical accuracy is the critical factor (also, less cluttered down the side). Seems to work ok (your mileage may vary).

what type of camera are you using Foxfish

Thanks for pm Steve, glad you liked them. I use a Panasonic DMC FZ30. The camera is fitted with a image stabilizing system, this helps with hand held shots but I use a tripod as well. Hope you have found this Thread OK , you can find out what other Guernsey spearos caught last year by looking at Guernsey Summer Fishing.

"O well" looks like its those same old ormers for tea again!
Tide went down well o.1. I wonder if snow is a good omen for ormering! forgot my hat so I was a bit chilly but found an easy dozen.

I have just been for my first dive this year. A commercial fisherman friend of mine told me he had caught a good haul of Couches Bream in a certain bay, plus the fact I have a new suit & a new gun, it was all to much to resist. Saw two small Bass together in about 3mt directly below me, took a snap shot from the surface & got one! Swam out into the bay & tried a few dives but the new suit needs more weight & I was having problems getting down. I spotted a reasonable crab half buried amongst some stones, got it in the end but then had to carry it around with me. So I swam back feeling fairly contented. The Mamba is an interesting gun to fire, very smooth & calm, I might pump it up a bit more though! Not the easiest gun to load while in deep water but can't complain really, first shot ever = one Bass! Might even try it out again tomorrow!

At last ! A trip report ! Good first catch with the new kit - nice suit - is it reversable ? THought it was a silver one.

Anyway, will check tides and might be up for a morning dive tomorrow if anyone is up for that - whenever the morning low is maybe out west....

(low at 3:41am [1m] so half tide rising at 7am (high at 9:35am).... hmmm might make it... meant to be sunny and fairly calm - in fact looks calm until Wednesday (http://magicseaweed.com/UK-Ireland-MSW-Surf-Charts/1/) - not sure if I will make it though... hmmm)

Well I guess it has been a good day one way or another! Apart from the fish I caught, I have been given part of the "Ormer Kings" catch of 92 Ormers taken over the three day tide. He gave me 6 to experiment cooking with, apparently he has been invited to appear in another Sky programme relating to culinary delights. But it must be said, my poor sparrow legs are aching, "big time" The first time out after a lay off always gets my calves, maybe the 2 mile around trip walking to the pub did not help!
Roll on the summer.

Congrats of the first Bass of the year Foxfish. I never heard of Ormers before but I finally looked it up...Abalone! Jez, I thought you had to go to Northern California for such exotic delicacies. Do they have the fancy shells used for guitar inlays?
(Who is the Ormer King -- one of your brothers?)

:cool:Cool. I have basket with scallop shells on my kitchen wall (used as dishes to serve scallops) -- must be "Spearo Chique"!rofl

We have a belt buckle from a US craft fair. It has been polished down to what at first appears black but is actually lines of black, cerulean & blue-green with patches of silver/white mother-of-pearl (abalone) around the tip & holes. The inside is white/multi-colour mother-of-pearl. Very attractive. I never realised what it was before -- thought it might have been some elaborate ceramic:duh. Looking at your picture though, the shape & the holes in the shell match. Abalone/Ormer shell!

Went out yesterday at a good flatfish location. Tried a few shallow aspetto at a place I like off a small point but not a sniff of a fish - pretty poor visibility but needed to go diving.

Swam across a channel and off out to a further reef and worked my way along the reef til I got to the end dropping down for shallow aspettos... still nothing ! Not even a wrasse.

Carried on but then changed strategies and worked stealth like in the shallows right in tight by the reef - nada !

Changed again and had quite a few drops for flatties on the edge of the channel but again blanked.

Was working hard so tried in the shallows again but the bootlace hasn't grown yet so nothing.

Gave up and went home - an hour and a half in the water and all I saw was a one inch fry :)

Conclusions ? Must wash more or change my soap.

SHARK!!!!!!!!!

Two big porgies were netted yesterday, close inshore in Petit Bot bay, south coast.

In the spirit of "Man eating shark" one of them is on the fishmongers slab in Checkers, Admiral Park.

It weighed 190lb and was about 5+ foot long, very tubby and VERY toothy.

Night dive, south coast anyone?

Been down to Checkers to have a look, both heads are there, ones a lot smaller than the other, I'd guess they were male and female.

Mouths were surprisingly small though, I guess I've been bought up on too many Jaws films! I don't think they'd get your whole head in, only a hand or maybe a calf, so you'll be alright :hmm
