I think 13.5 stone is very generous of you... If only!!! rofl

I'll have a look round ebay and that site Magpie mentioned to see what's about. You never know. I reckon a shortie will be OK soon (come on water temperature) as I do have some in built cold protection...

Well I did intend to go diving this evening over the high tide but when I went to checkers to buy some salad, thier fish counter was loaded with GILT HEAD BREAM. Considering this is the best tasting fish I have ever eaten locally, I brought two for tea. My other half has been complaining lately that I haven't been catching enough fish (three fish less dives) so the dive was postponed because I couldn't wait to get home & cook them.
I did ask the fish monger where they were caught, he said north of Sark. They all seemed about the same size 1-2lb, anyway superb eating :)

Ahhh the great GT's :) Never seen one let alone tasted one - does this mean that they are in local waters and available for pranging ?!

Might have to break out the scallop frills I have been saving and baste my suit as a sort of moving chum ball :)

They are caught in the southwest of UK in summer. Clive Thomas has shot them at Portland and the UK rod record was caught in Salcombe. They are about but not sure if they act like the 'Doradas' of the mediterranean. Can you spear around the waters of Sark?

Hi Spaniard, you are right about the British record being caught in Salcombe however the previous record came from Guernsey 8lb 2oz back in 1983.
They (giltheads) are becoming more common over here each year & I would not be surprised to see a few speared this year?
Unfortunately spearfishing is not allowed in Sark.

Thanks Foxfish. Are Jersey and Guernsey the only Channel Islands to allow spearfishing then? I was hoping to visit Jersey this Summer but wanted to try some of the smaller Islands too.

You can spear fish any Island apart from Sark but dont completely rule out Sark as it is an exceptionally beautiful & tranquil place to be in. The water is very clean & clear with the most amazing drop offs & caves. Herm is another unique Island, very small but full of atmosphere & seeped in history. Alderney is a bit bleak & barren but probably has the best fishing. Of course Guernsey is far nicer than Jersey:naughty

Ha ha! My Grandmother lives in Jersey so I know it quite well from a spearing point of view and as a lad I bought most of my gear there on easter holidays; First Tower Watersports and Graeme Le Maistre. Unfortunately I never visited Guernsey but you lot seem to be alright :friday so I'll need to get over there. Lets see if we can find the Guilthead Bream rofl

Me and lickle bruv went way down west today to play at Indians.

Got my first (little) bass of the year after 16 dives. Phew! Unfortunately spoilt somewhat by loosing a bigger one off the spear. Hate that. High shoulder shot - tore off. An even better one caught me napping. Still too damn slow!!!!!!!!

Saw 5 bass in total + one mullet. Think Mart saw 5/6 mullet and 2 bass. All in the bootlace.

Saw an unknown (to me) spearo working the same area. When he came out could see (with binoc's) he had a 5 lb-ish bass. Middle aged man driving blue saloon car? (He wasn't driving the car while diving :head ).

Dave :) .

Glad you got one Dave, definately seems like you've got to go west if you want the fish. Myself, Ed, Sarah and Catherine went North East and saw no bass.

Was a nice dive though, viz was a whole world better than last time I went there, though still not brilliant, a few spiders seen, one of which was a biggun but I didn't have a bag to put it in :(

Was my first dive in some decent tide round the back of the island was great getting wisked along with no effort. My float became detacted at one point though and was getting blown off towards Herm when I realised, caught up with it eventually but then had to swim back against the tide, going to tone my legs right up this spearing!

Am going to head out west again friday lunchtime I think, want to get me another bass before I'm under the knife next week and am out for a fortnight!

Cheers Foxy. Had a great Lib Day. My wife kept surprising me with gatherings of friends so it was fun.

Went out with Spicer:Chris yesterday. Way out west. Vis was good. Water 11.8C and felt great. Saw one mullet and skewered a nice wrasse but alas saw no bass. Wrong state of tide really. Next time tho...

Its not just out west mate. I'm in an office behind the bus terminus at the south esplanade and 20mins ago I couldn't see the far edge of the road let alone the boats in the Albert Marina!

Right, well just back from an, err, interesting trip out to the cup and saucer.

Out from work to get in bang on low tide, got chatting to a local fisherman when kitting up (discovered I'd bought one of mine and one of the Sarah's socks which was pretty tight and made my toes numb) who said there'd been some plaice out on the bank up to 4lbs this year! So got down to the water, flat calm, no wind, little stuff splashing on the surface, pretty idilic, until I went to load the gun.

Pulled it back, just got it in the notch when it released??? Strange, so I grabbed it again and soon realised why, busted wishbone :vangry Shite.

So that was my chance of a bass knackered so decided to stash the gun, cut off the spear and go have a look for them plaice.

After about 40m I noticed another spearo's float out by the reefs to my right so headed that way to see if it was any of you boys. Caught up with him after 20mins, no one I knew, but turned out he had a spare wishbone on him and happily gave it to me! Top chap! Forgot his name but he lived down that way. I told him about the forum so hopefully we'll see him on here sometime. Wished him luck and started the long swim back to me gun.

Got there, screwed on the new wishbone and reattached me spear and 50mins after first getting in the water we were fishing. Headed off towards the weed I'd seen a few in when I got my first when I encountered another problem. The new wishbone didn't fit my spear perfectly and on loading it it sprung out of the notch whilst my fingers where still in the bands. VERY glad I had 5mm gloves on, it took some skin off a finger regardless and its pretty bruised, so going to have to sort that out.

Got it loaded eventually and did spy a decent bass, but it had already spied me and made off. And that was that. Nearly 3 hours I'd been out there all in. Stumbled back up with the toes on my right totally numb from the too tight sock. But the strangeness was not over.

Coming back along Vazon I got held up in a random queue of cars? When I got to the point of the hold up there was a fat bloke with a ripped shirt having a full on fight with another bloke wearing nothing but a cycle helmet and a pair of shorts. There were some random women trying to drag them apart "Leeeve 'im, e's not worf it!". Couple of push bikes in the road next to a big 4x4. Very odd, but highly entertaining! :D

I met a fisherman down that way the other day too... and he said that there's a large seal and a seal-pup frequenting the area. Would have loved to have met them. Let us know if you do!
