Guernsey 2007

Scary stuff lads! Luckily there's no danger for me as a) I don't dive in deep water and b) I can't spot flatties anyway!

hi all

Just got into spear fishing, bought the basic stuff, a basic beuchat gun from fletcher sports. and me and friend go down near the imperial hotel as his house is very close.
I was amazed to see so many guernseymen on here, didnt realise it was that popular in guernsey.
I know there have been lots or replys to newbies like myself asking for tips but it would take me ages to shift through it all.
So just looking generally for hot spots or good places to go and general tips for a newbie starting out!

Cheers
Alex

Great weather yesterday, for a change. Didn't manage in myself but looking out the window at work the sea looked sooooooo inviting.

Determined to go today but of course the usual shit load of wind came from nowhere and crapped it all up. However managed a quick dip after work that turned into a marathon. Went in Grande Havre to look for a flat or two just on low tide. Not too deep and the vis was better than I thought it would be at 15+foot. I spent two and a half hours searching every inch of sea bed. Was determined to find some. In the end managed 3 plaice, all small, but that means the most tasty. Two were very well buried and I found them by prodding and the other one was uncovered. Found a small sole as well but left it and also saw some cuttles and a couple of good size bass, all out on the sand.

Should be quite pleased with 3 fish but it was bloody hard work and my ears are still sore. Still plaice for tea tomorrow .

3-2 now then, probably the only time I'll be in the lead till you hang up your mask for good. Nice work OMD.

Well done Dave, as you rightly say the small ones are the best eaters.
I am not sure about fishing for flatfish as last years ear problem is still on my mind. If there were more around I might be tempted but I guess there never will again?

hi guys

I know your guna be thinking, oh god another newbie, but just thought i would post anyways.
Went out today at about 6 o clock with a buddy of mine, we went down portlet next to the imperial hotel as he lives literally 2 minutes away, just as we suited up and made for the sea the sun disappeared, a little disheartened but never the less we made our way into the deep blue and i was quite suprised at the good level of visiability. But unfortunately 20mins in and the further we went out the poorer the vis got, so hunted around the shallows looking for flatties and anything else we could find. Only seeing a small grey mullet we decided to call it a day after about an hour. Sea was suprisingly warm.
Bit disappointed at not seeing much but then again its all good experience and thats the best bit about going out, you never know if your going to see anything at all.

Anyone know of any good spots down on the south west coast??

Thanks

Alex

Good to get in the water though even if not much about and wouldn't worry about not seeing flatties, never seen one myself, seems to be an art which OMD is the best at!! Personally never seen much in open water, much better round and in the weedy reefy areas.

Down that way, try round the reefs just past low water from where you were Northwards. Couple hours either side of low, some of them are better on neaps as they are more covered and not dried out.

Wardio, everyone is welcome mate, young, old, experienced, novice, male and even female!

Your input is just as valuable as anyone elses so write away. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask, but generally people don't get much response to "have you got any general tips" because its too general a question or "where should I go" because a) the fish can be anywhere round our island and b) people probably aren't going to give away their favourite spots to someone they've never met and certainly not on a forum that can be viewed by anyone, including commercial fishermen and shore netters.

Around Portlet is a good spot, plenty of bass round there and I know there's be flatties on the sand under the boats but haven't got round to actually going after them yet. The bit that I reckon holds the flatties down there would be quite deep for a novice though, but then there's always night diving...

Thanks very much for your imput guys, much appreciated.
Was hoping to get out again today(advantages of student life) but my spearo partner is working.
I weigh about 10 Stone, 60kgs what sort of weight belt should i be using?
Also what stances do you adopt when your swimming along or are on the bottom? Spear gun out in front with your free hand to your side?? or spear gun out in front and spare hand pulling for added propulsion??

Cheers

FINALLY.... got out for a night dive last night. Vis was excellent, 15°C. Went with George.

Saw a lovely small Blonde Ray, my first small Brill - which was dopey enough that George could pick him up! Also, a number of Baby Cuttles, a shoal of a Scad (a dozen or more) and a gang of delinquent Squid.

We covered a lot of ground but saw very little that could come home. As G said, "it's very fishy but there's no fish".

That said, we came home with a nice Sole, and G actually shot a Bass!! I nailed a big Mullet, but I need some council on this one...

The Mullet had what looked like a brain tumor on the side of it's head - about the size of an egg. It was an old fish, very dopey, probably senile. Not the first I've seen in the same condition. In the midst of getting it off the spear I got tangled in my own spear line and ended up losing it. But in the back of mind is the nagging question... what is this growth? and is there any problem with eating such an ill fish.

Does anyone know what this is? Has the fish been hanging around Flammenville and Cap de la Hague too much!?

cheers

The weight you use depends on your body make up and your suit type and thickness. There is no set weight. Most of us on here use 5mm suits and weight taken varies from 12lbs to 26+lbs, you'll have to work out what you need yourself. If in doubt, stay more bouyant.

Stance and stuff depends on the situation, if you are in deeper water you'll be best off on the bottom waiting, shallow water you can stalk quitely on the surface. Either way you should have your gun out infront ready to fire as fish can appear out of nowhere at anytime.

Nice report Marcel, no idea what the growth was.
What size were the gang of squid?

Weight is trial and error to a certain extent. What you're aiming for is to be slightly bouyant on the surface and neutral to slightly heavy on the bottom. Don't forget your suit compresses and looses bouyancy the deeper you go, but being too light is a pain in the. If you are too light you can always pick up a stone or 2 and stuff them up your jacket. If you are using a 5mm suit I would try 4 of the 2kg weights to start

Rocquaine is OK. Try the weed beds off the Douit du Moulin or in front of the cup and saucer on a low tide

Just got home after a quick dive on the north coast, managed one bass of around 3lb. I have been trying a few new spots, it would seem all my old ones are well documented & used now! Anyhow been to this one a few times & it is starting to come together. I think it has plenty of potential with all the kelp & bootlace but I have only taken 4 bass so far & that is in 5 dives the biggest was 5 + gutted. Today was better as the vis is much improved & the swell lessened, plenty of eel's & bait fish, found a couple of sand patches as well.

Beardy, I saw a few rockies at the weekend with similar growths. I think they might be parasites or something.

Went in for a quickie after work at a fairly central rocky area, with minimal gear, as it was just below half tide up. Vis was pretty bad with the sand stirred up by swell. Missed a 3-4lb bass within 3 mins. of getting in, saw another similar but only the vague shape. Finally shot a relatively small one - well it looked bigger in the water, honest! ( wife said, typical man).

Managed a dive again after work again yesterday. Hour and a half after flatties resulted in only one plaice caught after 5 minutes and then nothing. Swam through the bootlace on the way back in and saw a couple of bass, one of which I got.

Like my brother http://forums.deeperblue.net/655490-post209.html I went in again today. Good vis but not many fish about, where I was anyway. Flat calm and sunny, with low tide at 5pm was just too tempting. Gave my ears a rest so was just shallow bassing down west. Couldn't match Marco's efforts (see link above) but like Mart managed a couple of small/medium ones.

Nice fish Dave. Any pics to post from our Italian friends?

I've mentioned this before, but why is there sometimes a variation in the various tide info? Take today:

Tide table - 2.6m, at 17.24
Magic Seaweed - 2.0m, 17.30
Radio Guernsey (I know!) 1.9m, 18.00

It can make a difference!

North coast Foxfish ... interesting!
