Dave, as usual you are the fount of all knowledge piscatorial ! ( and crustaceal?) You should write a book!

Now, an old chestnut, which will produce a furore of controversy - did I catch a golden grey at last? I believe the gold spot isn't conclusive?

Looks like a GG to me (the bottom one that is). The eye and lip are different.

If you count the scales, backwards, along the lateral line, from behind the pectoral fin to vertically above the anal fin, and find an ODD number of scales, then for for sure, it's a Golden, else you've counted wrong.

Yes.

I wasn't going to mention this but I thought a safety update might be in order considering my recent misadventure...

Got back from a wedding in Alderney and thought I'd drop in for a bit of diving. Marco was keen and Pete also had some time off and another chap called Ed from the wedding party.

Anyway, the long and short of it was that I saw that Ed safely left the water (he had to go early) before rejoining the others... except they weren't there... I swam back to find the cars gone... with my mobile and most importantly my glasses.

It's a long walk from Beaucette to L'Islet with -6 vision and a heavy weaight belt...

Soooo.. if you take people to the beach in your car make sure you bloody well leave with them !

Four go in the water so make sure that you can verify that four leave.

Right... rant over.( And many thanks to 'John' who gave me a lift back and to the police who interviewed me later that evening to check if they needed to call out the air search....)

Ed,

That is really poor. The buddy system does not mean same ocean same day. Its high time we brought a freedive instructor over here to go over saftey. After i did a course in Cayman, I find it very difficult to dive alone anymore. So much can go wrong, and if you are underwater holding your breath at the time, thats it.

Anyway, glad you made it back without bumping into a tree or something.

g.

I don't disagree Beardy, but it doesn't take a safety course to work out that you're about to leave with fewer than you came with!

I presume there was some mulitple car confusion but even so...

It's logic really, there are dive instructors over here to teach that sort of thing but it's common sense. I go on my own (can of worms) so I don't have to worry about:

1. Shooting that giant camo rockfish hiding in the bootlace watching a bass.
2. Forgetting someone
3. Getting bored and leaving without them
4. In my case running out of puff hours before others!!

I only go in safe places so technically I am OK (ish).

Emma Farrell is over here at the moment running an AIDA course, the guys at Apnea organised it. It is worth while. think she might be on spotlight tonight and channel report tomorrow/next day.

She's a good instructor I took her course at the SETT tank, also read her book if you can, supposed to be good, i'm still waiting for mine to arrive...

Sorry Eddy

Just thought you could do with a nice stroll home! Multiple car confusion it was. I agree, you don't need official training to remember who was in who's car....ANYWAY, I just caught a triggerfish. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. I was in real shallows around the north-west, and saw this odd silver fish poking around. Having spied a few bream on our dive yesterday I didn't want to chance losing this opportunity to eat something new, only to find out
it was a trigger fish.
Once I'd shot the beast I suddenly felt a little guilty and couldn't remember if they are good eating or ridiculously toxic. Having had a little look on the net, I found a couple of recipes and so it seems it's on the menu....any recipes (or warnings) would be highly appreciated.

cheerio, Pete

Many thanks to OMD for crawfish information.I've read your post on scallops, among others, and I was rather hoping you'd reply. Also thanks to spaniard for the link to Howard Jones project.Nobody wants a no take zone on their favourite hunting spot but I'd love to have one here, to dive in regularly, and see how untouched sea could look.

Ah the chicken of the sea. Very good eating mate, no need for guilt.
In the shallows you say? Thats quite unusual, nicely done Pete.

Well I decided that since the gear has been in the boot of the car for a few days it would be rude not to give it an airing so I popped in for half an hour near to home and very near where the boys are staying when they arrive.

Viz was mixed, maybe 3 or 4 ft over the clear ground upping to 7-8ft over the reefs which were in about 4 ft of water at a guess when I was in just now.

Not that good but water was warm. Quite a few rockies about, nothing big though.Large shoal of something small which was darting about all over the shop like it was being chased but couldn't see the offender to shoot it. They weren't sand eels, not sure what they were, more shaped like herrings or sprats??

Anyways then got into a shoal of larger fish, all mullet, and thought since there was some fus over GG's I would shoot one of them. Easy to spot the difference when they are next to common thick lips, much sleeker in appearance and more shiny.

Anyways, selected my fish which politely turned so the top of it was facing me so I shot it. I like the new gun btw. Seems accurate enough. You would think a hole like that would kill a fish but nope, buger decided he was off for a swim and wouldn't give up. If anyone saw a large disturbance in the bay it wasn't a beached whale, twas me fighting a GG which wouldn't die.

So, with all the fuss about how they taste good can I have some cooking suggestions, it's gutted, scaled and sitting in the fridge awaiting instructions...

Cheers

Andy
