hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmm well,to be fair the fish i speared were on the string for up to 20 seconds or so before being (put to sleep)
if you look in detail @ the footage you will see 2 takes rolled in to one....
thats due to the actual shot not being caught on camera/on the string that is..

my methods are humaine and far from a trawler choaking a fish in the net.......letting it stay in the net for 1-3 hours...throwing it down to the processing deck....and then finnaly gutting it................

..........or even most local shore/boat fishermen who will hook in to a fish drag it in for 1-10 min's then throw it in to a bucket to slowley starve its brain of oxygen//lets not forget what happens to a fish when it has no time to equlaize.....pop!

i would also like to remind you that outside of the channel islands is a whole world and its oceans...all being spearfished...take a look @ youtube etc and i'm sure you will find 1000,s of peaple have taken the time to share a spearfishing experance(on film etc) with no intentional suffering aimed at the fish(other than a spear)
all the fish i shoot are only shot if they are going to be eaten

ok i'm new to this site but i assure you that tribbs and magpie have done worse things at some point in there lives..........think back.....keep thinking am i wright??????????????????????look in to the eyes of the next thing/fish you kill and as the knife goes in.... ask yourself are you kinder to mankind and its creatures than me.....i dont think so...... .

and thank god man evolved to what we are today, if we were all too squimish a few 100 thousand years ago it would all dirrerent??....maybe tribs & magpie would be on the end or a spear???????????

i hunt/spear fish/etc etc etc, but if a few unintentional seconds of suffering are inflicted upon a fish/anamal etc you should remind yourself thats LIFE!!!!!!!!!

No one is having a go at you mate, simply pointing out how one aspect of your video could be viewed.

We have to walk a fine line in our sport, if you read other threads on this forum you'll see that it's a sport under threat, so we need to be careful to ensure we don't give those who would seek to get it banned any additional ammuntion.

Well just to help clarify the situation and as Mcfargon said I fused some of the scenes together as a catch was missing the footage of the shot, as an example check out the last part of the movie, there is a mullet "thrashing" around and then as it's lifted out of the water it suddenly turns into a bass ! there was a scene i missed from the vid and it was the 6 fish lying on the beach after,maybe if you watch again you can try and work that out.

I don't really think there is anything inhumane on the vid and being the MAN that i am definatly nothing to stop watching after only half ??!?!?!

To be honest not the welcome I would expect for Mcfargon after the time and effort he has put into the first episode of many FISH BEING SHOT on film.

Saw John out in the yak with his son yesterday... Had a hot dusty day so needed the calm waters. Was at my wits end in a bl**dy bathroom shop trying to sort out stuff so went to chill in the big blue.

Legged it over the reef and just in the other side in the shallows stuck my head under, loaded, looked and saw two lovely silver grey/purple bass feeding in about 9" of water ! As I had my mini-tuna gun I lined one up and stoned it (lat line just by the gill plate).

I'm still testing this gun as I made it at the end of last season I think and only used it once or twice then - really liking it - nice set up double band 90cm with a high mass wood body (maple and mahoghany laminates and a paduak handle). Anyway, a mid range shot and was happy with the bass - saw John & son a few minutes later.

Followed the reef along and had a mix of 5m to 6m aspettos and some shallow stalking (I am rubbish as shallow spearing but got lucky with my early shot).

Took a very long shot at a surface swimming mullet and was surprised to stone it towards the end of the double wrap - sorted and on the stringer...

Swam across to a little island and was diving off it at a place I found last year - awesome terrain for bass and sure enough at about 8m I found a shoal of bass. One of the bands broke as I had it on the wrong notch (non-filed down..._ and the dyneema wishbone went twang... So I was down at 8m and wishing the bass to come closer but they stayed just beyond the range of the single banded gun - 7mm spear is nice but needs some oomph behind it

Ah well - really good to see and also some large pollack - was tempted but they just keep swimming in front of the gun at about 6"... and I had two fish already.

Looong swim back as I forgot the tide changes on spring-ish tides and the channel was a large effort to get across on the way back - thought I had overstayed my welcome at one point as I looked down and noticed that I wasn't moving !

Made it in the end and then watched some pr*t motoring in a small dinghy across the torrent like spit and then drifting back down plugging away, then a minute later motoring back again... seemed really really noisy and any self respecting bass would have legged it ages ago - I would have anchored in the calm water just to one side and then cast across the spit... seemed to irrationally annoy me ! Must keep taking those blue pills...

hey Toz and McFargon, i dont think anything negative was meant; people on the forum are really incredibly helpful and well meaning. maybe timing / wording of the posts was strong, but it did come accross as a long kill. let's put it behind us and once again, welcome to DB! keep sending in those fishy reports.

Probably going to stir up a shit storm here but hey ho! I stopped watching the video after the first part as i thought that mullet was left to suffer for way too long for the sake of some meaningless footage (Am I wrong?) Shoot it, grab it, kill it- Simple.

With the bloody anti's attacking hunting and fishing at every turn these sorts of things don't help.

well done Mcf, sounds like you're having all the fun

I managed to get in this morning, set the alarm for 4am, but woke at 3:20... :-(
a very pleasant swim and the wind had calmed overnight, so smooth water too
I was in 'camera' mode and hoping for some pictures of flatties, but as always, had the gun too.
It was a little dissapointing, i was surprised by how much weed has grown in a place that was open sand in January (doh!) so it was harder work finding flatties than i had expected. Saw a bream (i think) and a good size bass too.
very pleasant to get back in after such a long break. shame someone nicked my lantern from the beach. I leave it on as a guide to my exit point but i guess someone thought it was left behind.
