Better vis has made a new man of me. In for a night dive last night. Was going to be a quicky as low tide neap was 11pm, perfect for flatties. Unfortunately as it's not dark 'til 10pm then night dives this time of year are always late affairs. Eventually got in 10.15-ish after looking at a couple of spots. Went north/north as it looked the most settled plus is just down the road from my house.
Vis was fine, not brilliant but well fishable. Small swell but again no problem. To cut a long story short I wasn't out 'til midnight but I managed 4 small/medium soles. Perfect eating size. Saw 2 mullet , 1 red mullet, 1 scad, 4 small rays, 5 size soles (left 1 for next time) and loads of little soles, plus the usual smelt etc.
Nice dive.

I might be able to get in soon but my hip & arm, ribs & knee are sill a bit colourful! (fell off a roof)

In an earlier post you mentioned the worst vis for 50 years Dave. What happened 50 years ago?

I have to ask why your mate feels the need to shoot all those Rockies Leo? Unlike bass and mullet which move around all over the place, wrasse are teritorial fish so if you shoot all the fish you see in one spot there won't be any there the next time. I hope he's eating the rockies and mullet?
I've got some ideas Mart, stop falling off roofs for one, and secondly, fly out there, strap a motor to it, and punt it back. What a trip that would be!

For perspective, In Vancouver, when we (they) freedive, it is dark (and I mean dark like you can't see you hand without a torch) under 30 feet as the top 30 chokes out the sun with all the algae. However they don't spear there, as the ones you would want to are illegal to spear. But they turn out some top freedivers.
Definately getting out later this week!

Went in L'Eree way on sunday early morning in the thongweed. Viz definately improved and water warm. saw usual rockies and a small shoal of small bass also saw a larger bass. It was a definate easy shot it wasnt spooked swam slowy behind a clump of thongweed ..... I waited and waited but it never came out the other side !! It was one of those if only moments. Out in the boat later and caught a load of pollack off platte fougere and was able to catch and release all of them (all small) spent the afternoon with the 60 odd other boats anchored off the back of Herm.

It's as well my young brother enjoys working on boats as much as being 'all at sea'...or even AND 'being all at sea'!!!

You gotta luv this vis. After over 6 months of cr*p at last you can spear again. Today was the third dive in 4 days. Bring it on, Oh Yeah!.
After work this evening, just before high tide, with a swell and force 4 winds, doesn't leave many options. Know a spot that sometimes works in those conditions. Downside is lower vis and big rocks to get chucked against. Upside is bass and mullet playing in the backwash and hiding in the tidal lee of big rocks.
It was great fun. Not a big area but a few bass and mullet plus a load of medium wrasse all making an appearance on cue. Struggled in the rough water to line up the shots but took a couple of bass and a couple of big mullet. Soon fished out the spot so it was out after an hour and home in time for tea.

Well done Leo. That's a common thick lipped grey mullet. Most people just call them "mullet". For many spearo's that is their first fish. They are common as their name suggests and while they are not everyones favourite fish to eat there is no problem eating them. Generally we give the size of fish by weight rather than length. Mullet grow to over 10 pounds but anything over 5 pounds is a big one. Yours looks more like 3 or 4 pounds, which is a nice sized fish.
