Changing the subject from catching red mullet to eating red mullet - I froze one that I caught about two weeks ago in fact i froze the two fillets in a quantity of salt water & a couple of bay leaves in the hope I might actually get to like the things!
I can honestly say that I do not like red mullet at all, neither does Sarah, just to fishy, like a stale trout = horrible !
If you so happen to like red mullet then I suggest you might also like my second hand pot bait certainly smells the same.

Andy there seems to be a few strange people around who do like the things, Ed loves them & I think Tom does too. The Romans certainly did but i just cant understand why, when i cook fish for people i want them to be fresh as possible so as to aviod that partly decomposed flavor that red mullet has!
Mart, Jim ate a couple of Red Mullet that we had on our last night dive and he seemed to like them well enough, but then again he also said that Jersey was a nice place and he’s does live in London…roflroflrofl
Yep, got to say they're pretty much my favourite. Great texture and taste. I like the fillets chopped into strips, slowly fried in LOTS of butter and lemon juice then poor the whole lot over taglietelli, sprinkle with parsley, 10mins, job done. That said I've only ever had them fresh, at most one day after yanking them from the sea. On that subject the Brittany fish markets had Barbule Rouge for sale, lots of them, but all about 4oz!

Yup, though they've changed the design so Triaxx is a bit of a misnomer now, I guess Quadaxx doesn't have quite the same ring to it!

Only thing is I'm not sure how its going to have enough buoyancy for the gun to be neutral but we'll see.....next year probably! Still haven't given the C4 more than a couple of outing yet either, tells a tale about this year eh.
Had another go at a night dive tonight. Went in - 2 foot vis - came out - drove to another spot - 6foot vis - saw a bass from the surface while standing in 2 foot of water thinking about putting on my fins - decided therefore to give it a go - swam around in the gloom for an hour and eventually speared a small bass - got out - walked to another beach around the corner a bit - went in - swell - swam out over the deeper sand - 10 foot vis - no fish - got out after another hour - went home.

I'd be up for my first night dive, Jonny. Haven't been in for a while what with the weather, sinuses etc. Make it down at Saints and I can waddle home after a few pints too!

Personally I lurv Red Mullet. In one of my books it describes them as 'Woodcock of the Sea' they are imho best cooked whole 'en papillotte' with the liver left in. I'm hungry now
