Nope, Couches are pinky, Red bream are red with a black spot. Red's prefer deep water, we're unlikely to see any spearing.

Many years ago, before my fishing time but within my memory, red bream were one of the most common fish likely to be caught from the shore.
Derek used to catch them on bent pins!

I thought I'd try a new spot out west yesterday - possibly the same one Jonny went to. Within a short time of getting in, through the murk I sensed some movement in the weed and suddenly realised I was looking at the head of a 5-6lb bass sitting absolutely still! I was able to take careful aim, and bang! headshot. It thrashed around for a bit and then - wriggled off!:head:head It swam past me with a rueful look and I could see the wound in its head. Must check the Mamba's pressure! I tried to find it again in case it was dying, but no luck. I saw two more large bass tails disappearing behind rocks, then it started getting very murky as the tide started to flow.
So once again I seem to be going for the best missed FOM!
p.s. thanks for the bream info Tom. I thought the chap who did the fishing programme a little while back over here caught a red bream - possibly in Herm?

Ah yes! We used to get bamboos from Henry's at L'Ancresse,fix eyes on with wire and loop the line in our hands ( reels were for the 'gentry').
So this photo was taken at Jaonneuse by a man with a black cloth over his head and camera.Note my bent pins.the bent pin on the line and this spot was known as 'Bent Pin Alley'. I can't remember the date but it was round the time of Queen Victoria's visit.

I've been over in Guernsey for a week now - been busy having fun with our boys on the beach. Both have been snorkelling with me most days.
Have seen loads of bass, mullet, baby bream, marine sticklebacks etc...
Had a swim in Havelot bay last night at midnight but didn't see any fish - it was a drunken skinny dip at the end of my stag night!
My lovely fiance has said I can disappear for a night dive tomorrow night (Friday). Anyone up for it? I'm staying in cobo so nearby would be good but will travel if necessary.

Wow, great fish Jonny! You Guensey lot seem to night dive a lot - is this because it's too busy / crowded in the day with boat traffic tourists etc? I'm hoping there'll be some viz left by Tues!!? Only a few more days until hols woohoo! watch out Guensey bass, I'm after ya!
Well, I had arranged a night dive tonight with Portinfer but something came up and I had to cancel. Sorry about that Ed.

Well, just checked weather for this week and it's gonna be blowing a hoolie! Glad I'm bringing my surfboard, although swell doesn't look that big either 
Still can't wait to visit, should be ace!
I'm hoping there might be some sheltered east coast spots with some viz...er, like secret spots that hold heaps of unspooky fish
Anyhow guys if anyone's around for a fish or surf from Weds on, please give me a shout, it'd be great to meet some of you!
