Guernsey 2008

Great pic's Tom. Fished all around it but never landed there. Didn't know you could get inside.

Another night dive tonight. Took a few small plaice but left most of them. Got a smallish brill as well and saw and left a small turbot. Didn't see any reds tonight but did take a 2lb+ pollack and a half decent crab. Vis is still excellent provided your out of the swell. Looked for bass but only saw 3 mullet and no bass at all. Haven't seen any bass in the last 3 night dives despite a good look. Has been falling tides though or maybe Marcel and George got them all.

Went in down west just after the low. Was looking for a bass as have had no luck in this department on my night dives. Location and time were forced upon me by being nominated wifes taxi driver this afternoon.

Broke one of my all time records. Fastest bass. Not exactly sure but definitely under 5 seconds. That's from mask under water having entered the water with loaded gun to seeing fish and shooting it. Only a small one but almost instant, in knee deep water, having walked to the low tide over half a mile of rocks.

Saw a load of schoolies in the shallows and eventually took another but left the rest. looking for a bigger fish I saw one about 4lb and clean missed a head shot followed by being taunted by the fish as it slowly circled me and my unloaded gun. Next up saw a 5lb-er with a couple of mates and watched it turn just as I fired. Saw the spear shoot past it's flank missing by about a quarter of an inch :vangry. Last of all just as I was coming ashore I was suprised by a couple of 3 lb-ers and clean missed another shot as they took off. Finally stoned a 6lb+ wrasse, one of a couple i'd seen.

Have had better results from half a dozen shots but a few fish for tea and a pleasant afternoon hunt in nice viz can't really complain.

I was also unable to get in around the low so went to Foxy's hole at about half tide up. Similarly I shot my only fish about 5 secs. after getting in ( why is that?) only a smallish mullet but as it looked like a Golden Grey I took it. I think it is - would the oracles like to confirm? If it is I may cook it tonight in my favourite flour and Guernsey butter, or barbie. Only a few other mullet seen as it had already broken through and vis was going.

Nice fish by the way George - I think you've blown the August FOM out of the water with that one ( excuse the pun!:)) Still one day to go though ...

4 hours 35 minutes in the water today.... so far. Swam round the knife the wrong way (against the tide) saw a couple of bass including one which swam straight at me, managed one at 3lbs perfact for the BBQ tomorrow. Excellent viz loads and loads of small fish but no flatties, so the torch is on charge for later, might give port grat a bash.

Just great to be back in the water again

Wahey, great to see people getting in the water and catching fish. Today was sooo nice to have some sunshine and calm wind, finally.

Well done Colin and Andy, nice fish for the BBQ. :)

i went down to leree for low tide, for about 2 hours without seeing much at all. couple of small bass and lots of small garfish. I think the tide was too low for it?

I called time at Leree and decided to try somewhere deeper - so headed up to my local, in spite of all the crowds on the beach! amazing how different the sea was - vis was not as good (but still much better than it has been); also plenty of life in the sea, lots going on. Saw several mullet, including one that followed me for a bit, kept swimming past...

Finally i found a good deep spot with all the right ingredients and settled down for a 'sit on the bottom and wait' attempt, on the way down i saw a big slow moving fish amongst the weed, i hovered above it for a bit, looking for a good shot and not wanting the weed to affect my aim or the spear..
eventually the fish swam forward and i had a perfect opportunity. BANG!
stoned.

This is by far the biggest fish i have seen here and my biggest and best catch. :):friday

Beauty Jonny! Good work!

I'd say Golden Grey Col, the fins looks right, look at the lower/upper edge of the anal and rear dorsal fins, if they're curved its a gg, straight its a grey. Looks like a big one too, they don't get very large.

Excellent Jonny - George you'd better get those scales out!:)

p.s. Tom, yes they are curved. It went about 11/2 lb - I think the UK and Jersey records are about 2lb.

One for the worm drowners; had one of those strange conversations today with a complete stranger and bass and Guernsey came up and this person was asking me if I knew anything about a young lad of 17, Paul Edwards? who had entered a bass competition, caught a 10lb fish and then got disqualified because he was accused of catching it in a trot net? Does this ring any bells with any of you lot - I said i'd ask.

Yes mate, it was this weekend. The lad had been seen setting trotts (an anchored line of baited hooks which are left and retreived hours later) earlier in the week. Some people in the competition complained and he was going to be told that he couldn't enter any fish because of this doubt, then he turned up at the weighin with a 10 pounder.

An unfortunate set of circumstances, but no one was suggesting that he didn't actually catch the fish fairly on rod and line, the decision had been taken that he wouldn't be allowed to enter long before anyone knew about this fish.

Poor bloke, but the orgainsers were put in a very difficult situation by people complaining about him entering when he'd been setting the trotts.

This is the quoted explanation

The committee advised me of this last night and before I'd even had a chance to check if the entrance list to see if he'd entered, he turned up with a big fish at the weigh in this morning.

We had to make the difficult decision not to accept the bass on the basis that he should not have been allowed to enter the festival in the first place. He would have been informed of this today even if he hadn't turned up with a fish to weigh in.

Now let me make one thing clear. The young lad in question is from all accounts a completely honest and dedicated angler and I have no doubt that he did catch the fish fairly on rod and line. ...and he did in fact confirm that he'd been setting trots on the shoreline last week The problem for the committee was that we owe it to the other 200 anglers that the event is run fairly. Now if 2 of the competitors raised concerns prior to the first weigh in..... we owe it to them and the other competitors to ensure there is no opportunity for suspicion. If we had of accepted the bass into the competition the whole event would have been in danger of losing credibility.

I'm honesty devastated about the whole matter and I'm sure the poor kid is to..... but he bottom line here has to be that you cannot be seen setting trots one day and entering a competition a couple of days later. On a small island like this people will point the finger.

Bloody shame...... and I hope it doesn't take that shine of a very successful festival and I hope the young lad will get over this"

Issue is sort of closed and I never commented although I'm a forum mamber but as it's come up here then personally as he didn't break any rules I would have thought "innocent unless proven guilty" but apparently not.

Logically anyone who went boat fishing would be banned incase they entered a fish in the shore competition that they'd caught afloat?

One of the trouble with competitions IMHO is people take them very (too) seriously plus there's a lot of money involved in some prizes.

Thanks for that OMD, I am on guard duty as I speak but nothing doing!!! She is now 5 days overdue but the little sod seems quite happy where it is - perhaps it knows about the credit crunch? rofl

Mart took me to the Humps today in Yobo (v4.7) - dove the lagoon but saw very little except the odd seal - great underwater visibility and a load more neptune grass than last time I was here. Headed out to the mouth of the lagoon and 7m depth but still no fishies....

Currents are crazy round there - managed 1.8 knots with Mart at the helm in one particular 'river'... alot of fun but no fish :(

Had a go with other fishing types and other locations all the way to the Doyle but still no luck - feel like a Jonah ! But anyway, much appreciated Mart's company and hospitality - thanks for the invite skip !

Out in the boat all day. It was rough - again. Too rough for the fishy west offshore banks so just got a feed of scallops, plus a bonus large crab. Managing to dive every other day since last week sometime. At last decent vis. Freezer is starting to fill up :).

p.s. Jonny I meant to ask, what gun are you using? It must be powerful to have taken the head off like that! One of those cartridge powered ones?

We did have some fun in the tides up at the humps!!! At one time the motor was running 3000rpm but we were not moving forward an inch!!
I don't doubt the potential of the little islets but from our experience spring tides are not very good.
