that Mares Phantom fv 75 looks like a good gun, let us know how you get on...
Weights will depend totally on your body density, wetsuit, depth you dive etc. as Magpie said, stay buoyant at your working depth to begin with.
Well i finally managed to get myself on a freediving course! I spent the weekend at Vobster with a three others being taught by Emma Farrel. We also had the benefit of 'Newquay' Ian's experience on the Saturday morning which was also much appreciated. Congratulations on the *** Ian!
The course was great fun, in spite of the cold and soggy english weather, and the quarry provided some interest as well as variety, with various yachts and an aeroplane to swim around. Personally, a was disappointed with my depth acheivement as i had a chronic headache on both days
I was especially interested to learn some of the key points that distinguish between freediving and my 'bad habits' from Spearfishing, e.g. my silent - but ineffective duck dives (when not ballested up)
, removing the snorkel, less weight (none), etc... all good stuff.
Anyhow, back in guernsey and i am looking for a buddy to do some more of this, anyone interested?

Nice one Jonny, thanks for the vid. Looks like a great set up. I fancied doing the SETT course but that's been knocked on the head now. Not sure I like the idea of going in a quarry, looks like the viz is quite good though.
Don't think I'd leave the surface with no weight on though!
There was a couple of boys who used to be on here who did proper freediving, they used to do pool sessions up beausie, their names have completely slipped my mind though, will come back soon. Ah Marcel was one, erm erm, nope, can't remember the other.

Hi Marcel I think is Beardy and his mate George was the freediver who I think is GBO200. I think George was the one who used to wave at the tank divers on the wrecks on his way down! Not sure if he's still around.
p.s. I tried this evening at a favourite NW spot which was a bit silty but I did see a flick of a large departing tail, and shot at a smaller bass who came back to see what the spear was then swam around me while I was frantically loading! I think I could hear the fishy equivalent of " nyeah nyeah na nyeah nyeah!"

I see Marcel several times a week as he currently is doing some work for Education.
I'm still going up to 5 times a week, weather, tide and life commitments permitting. Seeing very few fish. Still mainly bassing.
Went Saturday in the boat with scuba. Rough day. Few scallops and a few flats, plus the obligitory angled macks and pollack.. Nice day (despite nasty waves) and planty enough fish for a few meals.
Spearing (snorkelling) yesterday for 1.5 hours in a good spot etc and saw half a dozen mullet and that was it. Absolutely dire.
Went for nearly 2 hours this evening saw 5 bass, all singles and including 2 bigger fish. Never got off a shot. All the bass were close in the weed but all saw/heard me first. Damn.

Not the sort of mail I like to receive but got this today...
It seems that a strong bloom is developing west of Guernsey (sea images of chlorophyll derived from Meris reflectance yesterday 18 and on thursday 15).
It is apparently similar to 2003 when the strong stratification favoured a Karenia mikimotoi bloom, an harmful algal bloom able to kill fish if they cannot escape.
Have you heard about this bloom and possible harmful effects this week?

It is apparently similar to 2003 when the strong stratification favoured a Karenia mikimotoi bloom, an harmful algal bloom able to kill fish if they cannot escape.
Have you heard about this bloom and possible harmful effects this week?

I just read the link on the fishing forum and it says it can be caused by fertilizer run off. In your second picture it looks like its going to cornwall because its stronger nearer us but could it be coming from cornwall and settling where its deeper and theres less oxygen?
had a chat with Steve yesterday. He opens his shop on Saturdays. He's running SCUBA PADI courses and sell associated gear from his shop. He doesn't have a licenced boat so is shore based. Tells me he's booked solid for months.
He sells snorkelling gear - sort off. However he is not a freediver or a spearo so.... not a lot of specialist gear stocked. Seems a nice chap though.
Perfect night tide last night. Popped in for a quicky. Saw a freshwater eel which is not too common in the open sea and lots of small plaice about half a pound with some near to legal minimum. Could be a good sign. A few sole about as well.
Couldn't find any bass at first but then surprise, surprise saw some early season red mullet. Three (out of 5) reds were near the pound mark but I didn't take any. Eventually saw some small bass and then as I was returning to shore I managed to spear a decent one.

HI guys,
Weather has been pretty good so far,so plenty of diving to be had over here. I have had a few nice fish,but nothing spectacular.
We have our main comps this weekend (CI Open and Silver Fish) and weather is looking set for some nice dives. Shame you guys canny make it.
Are you still having your "fish in" this weekend?
A couple of us are planning on coming over in the next month,so hope to meet up with some Guernsey spearos.
