Sorry big boy but I cut it up. Wasn't "that" big anyway. I agree we need some entries in the FOM. Started so well this year but seems to be fading. I'll try to catch something worthwhile if you do the same

I was in last night for a bit, found a shelterd spot, albeit a bit too shallow.
Had quite an eventful session, absolutely zillions of small plaice and sole, 3 in the first 30 seconds! all pretty small, although i managed to find 2 plaice and a sole that will be on the dinner list this week.
I also saw a spider crab walk right over a sole!
My speargun band/wishbone connection snapped as i loaded it (2nd notch) OUCH!
I also saw a lobster... Woohoo ... only the second one i've seen
also saw a big red mullet moving at high speed, no bass seen tho.
Here's the video, I strapped taped the camera to the torch with a block of foam in between this time to try something different, it needs more damping to prevent the rapid camera panning thing:

Nice one Jonny, I had a wishbone go on me when loading a few years ago, not fun!
Problem with strapping the camera to the torch is you can't move the centre of the beam away to get the target out of the hot spot. Fitting a decent diffuser to the torch would help a lot.

I as usual am very optimistic about the coming months .The water is now above 15 so the usual suspects are showing up. Saw and weighed a bucket of black bream biggest 3.4 and dangled a 6.8 shiny myself sunday morning so coupled with the proper summer weather weve had the last month its all good.Tight lines and slack rubbers.:wave

Really easy to grab them out in the open but you need a bag to carry them in.
lobsters are usually "banded" just a couple of elastic bands slipped over the claws render them completely defenceless.
Might be an idea to carry a few bands next time.
Also easy to deal with overnight as they will live for days in the fridge or just boil them for a few mins.

I thought you shouldn't shoot them as the flesh deteriorates at a fast pace (like crabs etc.) when dead?
Yep illegal in Ireland also, I didnt want to get into the legalities of it either, but just wanted to know if the flesh degrades the same as crabs.
The idea of swimming around with a live lobster on my goodie bag on my belt would be more appealing if I could dispatch them like fish. Its worrisome enough with crabs but their claws are not so large!

Great vid Jonny. My one broken wishbone in recent years was at night too. Looks like the plastic screwcap was the weak link as it was in my case.
The main issue with live/dead shellfish (crab, lobster, oyster, scallops etc) is that the particular bacteria that cause food poisoning when it grows in dead shellfish tends not to smell. When meat goes bad (even a little bit) it smells bad but "off" crab doesn't smell until it's really manky. So only way to ensure safe shellfish is to have it live. If you catch it yourself you will know how long it's been dead and so as long as you looked after it as you would wetfish then you'll be fine. So spearing them if you then eat them causes no health problems (except to the shellfish). I'm not sure about some of these laws which sometimes seem rather anicdotal but personally I don't spear them.
Incidently crabs and especially lobsters will live for weeks rather than days when kept in a fridge at between +1 and +5 degrees. That's without sea waterjust covered with a damp cloth. Must be some sort of suspended annimation or hibernation.

Yeh i'm going to have to agree with bobdonny, Speared lobster flesh isnt as nice, the sea water gets in and the flesh isnt as firm. I've shot a couple in the past that were holed up really deep, and all in all not really worth it. Its also a lot more satisfying grabbing them by hand (greater bragging rights). A good tip though is if you do find one holed up, take your spear off and use it as a tickle-stick/hook, one flick and a spear becomes a hook. If you have a lobster stuck in its hole and its not cooperating one trick is to repeatedly prod at it/to the side or behind (last resort) I've had it work multiple times where a holed up lobbie looses its cool, and tries to fleem, often straight into my open keep net (funny how they would'nt enjoy being repeatedly poked in the face eh?)

Hello, Guerneyers. I’m in San Diego, California for a few days for a convention. It’s my old home town; my father worked at the local oceanographic institution. Look below to see the view from my window. That ship is the Star of India, build in 1836 on the Isle of Man. It’s the fourth oldest working ship in the United States and the oldest that regularly sails.
It’s a museum, and I want there yeas ago. But I wasn’t working on novel about mermaids and sailing ships back then, so I didn’t take notes. I’m going to take time out of the convention to tour the ship and learn what I can. It should be fun.
Since even a current connection with the Isle of Man wouldn’t make it fit in Channel Islands message board, I’ll leave off there. But for More on the Star of India ([ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_of_India_%28ship%29[/ame])

Did anyone see the coookery programme on BBC this morning? He went lobster gaffing with someone in Cornwall on a low spring. Anyone tried it over here? They also went to see a lady who's a lobster whisperer and hypnotises them by standing them on their claws in a sort of yoga position, then strokes them and puts them to sleep so they aren't stressed going into the pot, which apparently makes the flesh taste better! Any comments?

Yep I saw that last week they weren't very successful were they, didn't make much of the lobster hypnosis.
