yep colls, had a 7lb lobby in may cricking, a couple whilst ormering aswell. one of the best ways to catch em. p.s i think that lady/lobster witch may have been a little bonkers.

Went for a nice night dive with Mo last night (sorry for the torch confusion Tom). Saw a few fish but not too many to be honest....
Got charged by a large mullet as soon as we went in ! Amazing sight to see it barrelling straight for me - just missed me and was going fast...
Followed the weed/sand run out towards a point and then doubled back and zig zagged across the sand. High tide but should have been more fish!
Saw a few sole but mostly small. Good to be out again but forgot how late night diving can get - good fun and nicely relaxing. Think it was Mo's first night dive ?

Yeah - those torches are magic - wish they were around 5 years ago ! Very bright and good 3 part switch for variable blindingness.
I popped in some 2600 Ultrafire cells in and worked a treat.
One is ordered but guess I'll have to wait a few weeks...

I popped in to Donkey Divers yesterday to see what they had - mainly scuba gear based but also some cheapish masks, flippers etc. ( makes like Beaver, whose booties I have had for about 4 years)
The lady there was very friendly and helpful and said they could look at getting gear in if they knew what we wanted. However, companies like Mares apparently look at something like £10k of orders and insist on things like having a window display!
The shop do things like do inflatable SMB's, and the separate flags, which was what I was after, but they are sold out.
They also had some hefty looking torches, metal and apparently used by the US navy - can't remember the make unfortunately. May be worth a look though.

1) Everything I’ve read, heard, and seen says that there are lots of caves in the Channel Islands coast—Sark in particular. But in all your diving, do you have a sense of whether there are many caves with entrances only underwater (always underwater despite tides)? Because mermaids would prefer that. I know it’s all fiction, so I’m free to create caves I want. But I want these caves to be geologically plausible.
2) I’ve been thinking about the possibility of my mermaids using branches washed into the water to weave baskets. Are branches floating near your islands common or rare? (Or are there many trees growing in easy reach from shore for someone who can’t walk? I didn’t see that many that could be crawled to, but I wasn’t looking for that then.)
3) Have you gone spear-fishing for dogfish? If so, how do they react during the hunt?

Dogfish are slow bottom feeders & would be easy prey, not much in the way of floating branches but traditional crab pots are made from willow, there would of been plenty old or lost ones around the sea bed.
I think most caves are made fro wave action & tend to be in the tidal zone because of that however yes there will be totally submerged caves.

I would have thought they would be more likely to use kelp fronds and stalks to weave baskets than tree branches.
Thanks for the report Ed. Then torches certainly do the job, especially for someone like you who turns it off all the time when on the surface!
If anyone is in that dive shop it'd be gratefull if they could find out the make (and price) of them torches Colin saw, as it's metal bodied it may be ripe for customisation, far better than plastic ones.

It doesn't look good if the things they predict come true. As if the commercials didn't do a good enough job, nature comes along and finishes it off!!

Rules
To have your catch entered in the UK Fish of the Month (FOM) competition you must satisfy the following rules.
Membership.
1. You must have been a current active member of the DeeperBlue.com Forums, when you made the catch.
2. You must have been a member of said forums for a minimum of one calendar month prior to making the catch.
3. You must have previously posted at least 10 times on said forums under your user name as described in 1. above, when you made the catch.
Catch
1. Your catch must not break any laws currently enacted in the country where it was taken.
2. Your catch must be within any size limits as laid down in the country where it was taken.
3. Your catch may be of any fish species and including cuttlefish, squid, crab and lobster but excluding scallops.
Method
1. You must have been fully immersed in water when you made the catch.
2. If beneath the water surface you may only have been using the practice of breath hold freediving to make your catch.
3. You must have made the catch by hand, using a hand spear, a polespear, a Hawaiian sling, or a speargun powered solely by your own manual loading effort.
4. No method of capture must break any laws currently enacted in the country where it was made.
Entry
1. You must have posted a report of your catch including details of its weight and with a clear photograph, on the DeeperBlue forums.
2. A picture, with a daily newspaper in the background, must accompany the entry to prove date of capture.
3 Accurate scales must have been used to weigh your entered catch and DB staff may request proof of this.
4. All entries must be in by 23:59hrs GMT on 2nd of following month. (e.g. April entries to be in by 2nd May)
5. You may post your own entry on the appropriate FOM monthly thread.
6. Staff reserve the right to modify or even reject and delete entries that do not comply with the rules.
7. All weights must be entered in Pounds and Ounces
Result
1. All winners will be chosen by popular vote on a DB on-line poll.
2. A draw will result in the first posted entry winning.
3. Voting will last for 5 days once poll has been set up.
4. You can enter as many times as you like every month but you will be asked to nominate only one entry to forward to the poll.
5. In the event of there being 20 or more individuals entering the competition a short list of 20 will be chosen by DB staff.
Staff decisions on all matters relating to the FOM are absolute and final.

Sorry can't remember the make, but the serious ones were about £130 from memory. There were also some cheaper (£ 30) metal ones, but too heavy to strap on to a mask! Also one with a strobe at one end, doubling up as an emergency beacon ( about £60 I think).
Was in yesterday at grande rocque. In the shallows the vis was ok. Further out the bloom really started to make an affect with a sort of weird tinge to the water but it was still pretty fishable.
Two shoals of bass spotted out deep. Well beyond the rocks. Biggest was maybe a 5. We followed them out and my brother got a shot off but missed and I was lying on the bottom waiting for them to come just that little bit closer getting blocked by the most miniscule bass I have ever seen. Oh well, Had a lobster while I was waiting on the bottom which was a nice suprise. It was a tiring 2h deep diving session with a sizeable swell running so I didnt want to spend too long in the shallows when the tide turned. Also had to retrieve my float twice when it snapped off. Grande rocque barnacles are not kind to float line.
Probably going to have a dip at bordeaux this afternoon.
