Hmm it seems the algae threat is very real - our new member Everest posted this.....

I fish the hurds deep on a regular basis, however an alarming algae bloom has developed off the north west coast of guernsey, It is approximately 50 square miles and its northern edges are approximately 35 miles south of lizard point. It is so dense that you can not see further than 4 cm and appears to be browny yellow, at lttle like poo you might find in a baby's nappy. Does anybody know how deep this bloom goes to and what impact on cutting out the light to the sea bed some 120 m below? Does it kill fish at that depth. It has been sitting over this area for nearly three weeks and is still there.

Hi chaps. Sorry for the radio silence. Usual story.

Been in twice this year. Last time was a few weeks back. Night dive with a newbie. Very fishy but nothing takable. Saw a 2+ft conger free swimming which was nice. Had a play with him on the bottom but he wasn't impressed. Nice to be out.

Getting better tomo but still some wind, massive tides this week, ideal for flatfish hunting!

Went for a night dive on Friday with Mo. Quite warm and clear but not that much around - saw a small sole and a small bass. Good to be in again
Found a calm spot in the end - we checked out quite a few locations and the swell and wind were kicking up the waves a bit.
Very high tide too but Friday night is a good time for me to go diving so beggars can't be choosers. Next week it might be better...

Also got out last week. Gorgeous night. Went south out of the wind. Came home with a couple of modest bass. Lost another

Vis was pretty good but a bit milky.

Pretty much the same for me, a couple of modest bass but no flatfish.

On a different note, I watched the power boat racing this morning.
I think it was the best I have seen, more like a motor GP what with the boats lapping the coarse in 2 mins & coming within 25mts of the land rec break water at 75mph.

Did my 1st open water dive today. Great fun but was surprised to see a large sole sitting under the sand. Was broader than my open hand so would estimate that it was at least 8" across.

So where is the old boy then? Hope he`s just on his holidays .Seems very echo ish on here without his input.As you all know i`m a dangler rather than a wrangler like most of you so i can only tell you whats being dragged to the surface. Been on the fish lately so they are there. Nothing spectacular mind but plenty of 3lbers (bass).With the odd decent fish here or there.
Not interested in where guys but interested in what. Anybody been in?

Yep, Dave's just off on his travels, will be back soon enough. Me I haven't been in for weeks, the contents of our bedroom are filling my play room at the moment and all my diving and fishing stuff is buried behind it.

Still, nearly done renovating now, plasterings done, painting nearly finished, carpet goes down next week then I'll be able to play again, night dive season now!

Does seem to be a better number of fish showing in the last few weeks eh.

I went for a dive last Friday, went down the Petil, huge big tide so I thought I would dive that beautiful gravel patch on the outside of the bay.
You need a nice big tide so as the area becomes a bay otherwise the tide will just carry you out to sea & all the weed lies flat anyway.
Best conditions for hunting bass in the weed is when the string weed is standing straight up, it is then possible to stealth up nice & close to any hiding bass.
So with excited anticipation I found myself at the top of the beach one hour before low water, I parked up opposite Paradis & walked down through the dried out boats.
Right by the waters edge, there was a chap washing his boat undersides with bleach, unfortunately, because of the strong stream that was flowing under his boat, the water was all foamy & hazy in the shallows - in fact the dirty water flowed out all through the bay but became more diluted further out.
Quite shocking really as the detergent must of killed lots of marine life!
So I swam out though this dirty water pretty much blind until I was able to deviate away from the streams flow.
Superb hunting ground comprising of Jap weed, sand patches, string weed & ultimately the gravel patch - what makes this place so special is the fact it is only fishable on a few big tides a year.
So what did I see?
Three small bass in the string weed, absolutely no flatfish on the gravel, one cuttle, 4-5 wrasse of a small size, plenty sand eels, plenty smelt, no lobster, no conger & that was it!
A two hour dive in a spot that has produced British records & sustenance for my family on many occasions almost barren!!!
I did however spear one of the bass - about 3lb.

I gave up spearing there when it seemed nasty stuff was being pumped out from the refuse tip (gives away my advanced age!)...so not much changes

Yes good read that Foxfish.Have fished into the entrance to that little bay on a very low tide and was struck by the beauty of it all especially how it turns from a racing torrent into a still lagoon with an entrance of only a few meters.If i remember i was after Bullhuss but was plagued by small stuff pecking at the bait (probably bream). Not a place to be getting cut off eh.Have a great weekend.

had a 50cm bass today, very skinny tho.
vis was poor but well fishable, bit swelly.
any of todays 'Perelle Crew' have any joy? was a bit of a party down there lol.

in at Marble bay over lunchtime, dont you just love the cliff walks...! no vis but 'saw' bass, mullet and pollack, nothing worth taking home tho. then in at perelle for a splash as the tide came in. some nice but shallow aspettos in relatively clear water. very pleasant.
