They could swim/crawl up the pipe in Grande Havre at high tide into the Vale Pond, thats got loads of reeds in it.
Not sure they're be any good for building anything with though, or that the mermaids would fare too well in brackish/freshwater.
Well done you boys who've been in, keep up the good work keeping those of us whose heating is making staying inside seem far more pleasurable entertained.

Thank you -- both of you. Whatever is true is what's good. It was a lead I felt I needed to pursue, but since it had the potential of radically changing the society I envisioned, I'm not sorry to learn there's not a lot.

To be more precise, it''s set in a fictional world, technically like Narnia or Middle Earth, but a "no-magic" world strongly reminiscent of the real world. The primary setting is the island of Tane, in which some parts resemble Guernsey, others Jersey, and still others (particularly where the mermaids dwell) are dead ringers for Sark.
I'm trying to put them in a rigidly realistic oceanic environment, which is one reason why I come and ask odd, detailed questions now and then.

eric, with respect; your mermaids world sounds terrible. (take this with a well-intended liberal pinch of salt please
) The Narnia world is amazing, the Narnia 'magic', or what c.s. Lewis implied with it, i.e. the Biblical message that is inter-twined, is real and true (in my opinion). If you want truth then the Mermaids world will be all the richer for seeing it.Personally, i just ask that you keep an open mind; oh and include plenty of real-world allusions to add to the richness of the story, which we are all looking forward to reading...
Believe me, I love both Narnia and Middle Earth. Narnia is a world created as allegory. Middle Earth, although created by a devoted Christian, was never intended to be an allegory. Tolkien hated allegory. But although one was dedicated to God and one was an exercise in creating a distinctly English mythology, both are words of wonder and magic. I want to add my own magical worlds.
My mermaid story is not going to be in a magical world. But I think it will be a world of wonder and awe. That's part of my goal. I can't say whether you'll end up liking it or not. I obviously hope you will. I hope you'll get the chance to see. But please don't think I'm denigrating Narnia or C. S. Lewis.

, it was more your comment " a "no-magic" world strongly reminiscent of the real world" that i dont go with (just my opinion of course). One of the truly amazing aspects of freediving (and spearfishing) is getting in the water and experiencing the 'magic' of Gods creation; and there is imo the deeper spiritual side that is all part of it.Anyway, no offence was intended, you just go me going is all

njb i'm open to ideas but had thought perhaps grosse rock by kayak, to get in out of the wind and it gives options for shallow &/or slightly deeper dives. do you have a yak?

Yer it was quite peachy in; good vis and a little easier in the suit with extra weight and ankle weights
Saw a shoal of about a hundred very small pollack hiding by a reef, also lots of smelt around and the usual couple of mullet - i took the second one which was a good size, weighing in at 6lb 1oz gutted
