Great fish Jonny. But the water felt cold today when the waves went over my head while I wasn't paying attention.

The bass are down south... had 2 on the rod yesterday along with 14 pollack, 3 rockies and 3 gars on the lures.

Shame the biggest bass decided to let itself go before I weighed and/or photo'd it. Never mind, I might go back down there once I recover from coming back...

A quick reply yesterday because my phone was red hot. (Why don't people get their heating systems sorted out before the cold weather?)

1st of all, many thanks for Jonny for the invitation. Really nice bloke. Didn't even laugh when I turned up with scuba suit and fins.

The sea state was much calmer than forecast, but was still expecting the sea to be cold, so was pleasantly surprised when we entered, as the water was pretty comfortable, although there was a bit of initial cold water ingress. The visibility was pretty good too considering the recent winds. I haven't dived this area for a couple of years but really noticed the lack of fish, particularly rockies, only saw a handful of small ones whereas I would previously have seen hundreds of them. the only other fish I saw were a few smelts and a handful of baby pollack.

On returning to the shore, I saw that Jonny had a big silver thing strapped to his back, even more gutted when he said that he had seen more mullet. The one that he brought back was a beauty, more than 7lb before it was cleaned. He didn't even gloat, which was some achievement considering how rubbish I was.

At the end of the day, it was a great experience. Met a top bloke, had an enjoyable dive, learned a lot and can't wait until the next one.

Didnt see much, one bass which i missed at point blank! a few mullet and a huge starfish (photo taken on an olympus Mu Tough 8000 = not very good!):

Andy, the bass was about 4lbs.
The best part was just making some drops in shallow but clear water and enjoying a really peaceful spot.
it would be amazing to kayak around this area, but a pain to lug the yak up the steep slip and road afterwards!! You've done that havent you Tom?

Jonny that is some cracking vis, is that the spot that you took us to last time we came over? Park at the top of a real steep hill and walk down a footpath to the sea? Can’t remember the name of the place but when we looked it was a sight rougher than in your picture.

Fishing/diving yaks aren't really designed for seal launches!

But yes I've been out from Saints a few times, getting to the water can be difficult as the granite gets bloney slippery below the halftide.

Conversely this helps getting back up as you can just slide the yak up without any damage then stick it on yer wheels when you get to the corner.

1st time I launched a kayak from there, my 'mate' told me to sit in it and he would gently slide me into the water. As soon as my feet were in, he gave me and almighty shove. Didn't even have time to get nervous. Managed to stay in (just) and was only slightly wet. didn't have any loose gear to lose fortunately.

I have a Manta Ray, so it sits flat. I imagine that some of the Ocean Kayaks would be more awkward because of the prominent keel.

Yeh both Jonny and me have Scupper Pros so may well end up with a nasty case of face granite rash if we tried, but have done Havelet Wall in a sitin back in the day, back before sanity replaced the sense of fun!

Paul, its just around the corner with the photo looking to where we tried. its an amazing coastline and such a contrast to the West coast.

Just managed an hour or so in the water; amazing vis, very clear. also as the wind had dropped it was like a mirror, so calm. oh and colder out than in!
I managed to find a few plaice and a small bass to take home :) I also missed a BIG bass (becoming a habbit!).
have a good plan for tomorrow night if the wind holds off...

You're an inspiration to us all Jonny! Colder out than in would be an understatement today I should think- take a couple of dives to melt the icicles on you nose!
GUERNSEY IN NOVEMBER!!!!This ain't supposed to happen!
Wonder when we ,if ever, last closed the schools and generally ground to a halt for snow at this time of year.
