I have heard the reports of big surface rod caught bass but, the mark is on the limit for my boat at about 10 miles from port but only 4 miles offshore - however the weather looks suitable for a shot at the mark tomorrow!
I loaded the boat with fuel, checked the auxiliary starts, scrubbed the bottom & added 100' to the anchor rope!!
Wish me luck as my mate had one over 13lb today!

Mike, your turbot is definitely worth entering the FOM as it will be the only one so far this year!
I have only ever speared one turbot in almost 40 years of diving & that was not a big one at about 3.5lb!
I would have to study Derek's diary's to see how many he recorded but I think he had about 8 double figure ones?

Been looking 4 the mark, already been on Google and drawn a 10 mile arc, but unfortunately still none the wiser! Good luck 2 mos.
I went in again today with my mate Rob. Despite the smooth conditions and complete absence of swell, due to the big tide, vis was poor and and we only managed 4 small bass and a mullet between us. I did see some bigger bass, but they suddenly appeared out of the gloom and then disappeared like ghosts. I will be venturing out again 2 mos, but I don't expect that I will encounter a 13lb bass........but you never know!

I was in at Cobo yesterday. Despite swimming a google earthed 3km , right round to the small sandy bay behind Grosse Rock, doing aspettos, shallows stealthing and sand mooching, the grand total of fish bigger than 1lbs I saw was 2 mullet and 3 rockies.
Terrible dive, poor viz.
Good reports though chaps, I saw a familiar manless kayak bobbing around in a familiar place on the way back so no surprise to hear Jonny was in.

Had big plans for today, but the fog had it's own ideas. So I binned the kayak plans and went in off the shore. Even so, I couldn't see the shore from 50 yards out! I went in search of 'holes' as suggested by mike
Found a few with some massive Rockies in, well over the 10lb Mark! but only a few few small bass seen, and left. Found a large shancre crab which I played with but also left.
Nice to be out, but it was a bit spooky with the sea like glass and no wind, just the fog horns and that luminous sky without a sun.

Jonny certain places in the uk hold bass in holes but I & many others have been peering into holes for decades & never seen a bass!
loads of chancre, conger wrasse & lobster but never a bass?
10lb wrasse = British record I think?
I Know a few mullet holes so perhaps there is a bass hole somewhere?

Whilst Jersey/Guernsey don't have the same rock structure as certain parts of UK where hole fishing is the norm, we do find a few fish in holes in Jersey so I am sure there will be some in Guernsey. Keep looking Jonny. Find places where reef/rock are in the run but the holes are sheltered from the tide. Dive at different states of tide, because I have found them even on the top of reefs which dry out. Bass and mullet often use the same holes and sometimes at the same time. You may find a shoal of mullet crammed in, and dismiss as only mullet, but a big bass lurking behind them. Big bass seem to be smarter than mullet and send them out first! Sensible really. They seem to like big boulders,even those with only a small with a gap underneath. They are always worth a look. The entrances don't have to be big, but sometimes they open into larger caverns which can be packed with fish.
A true story, many years ago I was low watering for lobsters and was rooting around with my hook and pulled out a three pound bass! I was only waist deep! Prior to that hadn't bothered to look for them in holes believing that Jersey bass didn't live in holes. Now I know different.
When u do find a hole, best to keep its location to yourself. I've even had one or two of JSC's more competitive club members, covertly watching me from the shore with bino's trying to suss out my spots. (u know who u r!).

Flew back over to Guernsey for the week and to do some mooching off my parents, looking out of the plane it was clear a dive was on the cards. Mum informed me a BBQ was on the cards and that i should get my act together. I went out west with my 75 and lobster hook. The water was soo warm and clear, I could never get sick of diving Guernsey. 3h later I had 5 really good lobbies in the bag, saw loads of other takeables but left them, and found a huge wrasse, approx 1.5ft long (biggest i've ever seen) and came within kissing distance of the biggest conger iv'e ever met. Sufficed to say Lobster is a readily accepted currency in my parents household and that currently i can't put a foot wrong

We just got back from a couple of days in sark, Saturday was a good day! Managed a dive, camera, no gun.
It was hard to find a spot out of the tide and with some vis, but ended up in at la havre gosselin, what a walk back up that was! The sea was like glass, great reflections, but awful vis.
Sark is a great place, but I kind of like the modern world!
