Congrats Yeti, decent size by bass standards!
Back to topic - I went in at a large rocky place on Sunday, probably not ideal with a large neap, but in fact viz wasn't bad - 3-4 m - and I saw a couple of nice size bass, fleetingly, before they scornfully flicked their tails at me, and I'm sure I even heard a fishy " meep meep" . I hadn't been here at this state of tide before, and it felt really " bassy" ( like Shirley) with waving forests of thong weed, with those puffball thingies and everything.
On the way in I had a quick shot and saw my spear disappear off the line! Luckily I hadn't hit anything or that would have been really annoying :vangry When I found it, I saw the snap link ( I thnk they're called ) on my wrap had broken open - hmmm ... think I need a stronger one. Then when I got in I noticed my nice Omer knife with velcro strap had come off my arm, so it's back to Apnea for one with rubber straps this time. So if anyone finds one ...

By way of introduction ... I'm Dan.
I'm 32, originally from the north west, did some scuba previously, I've been resident and working on your lovely island for 3 years now but shunned your frosty waters doing my diving in warm water on holiday instead.
Just returning from hols in Indonesia, ditched the tanks and did freediving for a couple of weeks at Freedive Gili Trawangan - Free Diving Gili Trawangan Diving and I'm officially hooked.
Still very noobish in many ways of course but comfortable at 15-20m (did the SSI apnea lvl2 rescue skills etc @ 15m) and looking to keep practicing in Guernsey ... are there any freedivers looking for a buddy or groups who can fit in an extra?
Are there any local shops where I can get weights and a rubber weight belt?

Right, sorry it's taken a while chaps, busy day. Anyway firstly, Dan, obviously Jonny will be in touch, we also had two lads who used to properly freedive, Marcel and George but they're irregular visitors these days. You could try pming users gbo200 and beardy241.
As Spirit says Dive Guernsey will have weights but I doubt they'll have rubber belts. On a tip off from good old OMD I got mine from Interseals, they use the perfect rubber for large pipe flanges and you can get off cuts off them for free.
Now, on to last night. With you lot saying there's crystal clear viz and no wind to speak off I gave Ed a shout and we ventured out into the night. Viz was not crystal, but it was the best I've seen it for quite some time so we set off through the weed looking for a bass or two before planning on hitting the sand.
I saw two smallish bass but they swam unhindered but surprisingly we saw no more in the japweed but out on the sand I soon found a nice sole which cam with me. Ed followed that with a red mullet and then I found another nice sole, and then another which was better than nice and I had a right old wrestle with before it joined the others.
Then out in some deeper water I saw a fish shape on the bottom with massive pectoral fins and I new straight away it was a nice tub gurnard. Never had one diving before and made no mistake with the direct through the top of the head shot.
After that Ed bagged another sole and at 3 sole each, we agreed that was enough of those. Must have seen another 3-4 good size ones too! We went back into the shallows to try and find a bass but just stumbled into a load of small blonde ray, I saw at least 5 in the space of 20m. All small, 1-3lbs probably, one was missing it's tail.
And that was pretty much that, a great dive to kick off the night diving season for me!
Back home I stuck my biggest sole on the scales which went to bang on 4lbs, the biggest I've had yet, and bloney tasty too!

Awsome catch and great write up TJ, was convinced it was going to be a new species of bream you had ended. I saw a tubgurnard once down choet, walking along the bottom, it was only about 6 inches long (most of which was its head) so let it be. keep the posts coming

I've had an intensive 3 days of spearing, given the excellent conditions.
I had Friday off so took advantage of the 2.4m low tide and calm weather to go to a favourite NW spot. Quite a few bass were seen in the weed beds, mostly small to medium and in shoals, but none hit, then had a shot at the biggest bass I've never hit, easily double figures, messing about on the sandy bottom just outside the kelp.
Encouraged by this, I went in again on Saturday on the 1.9m, saw lots of smallish bass, some in shoals, had lots of shots but only took one home, due to a problem with the wrap on my gun.
Today I went back, determined to find that big bass again, but the 1.4m was I think a bit low, and a big tide for this spot and I only saw a few mullet, but also, in deeper water around a big rock, my first triggerfish! It was head on and only a few feet away, so in quick succession I thought it was a rockie, then realised it was grey, then when it turned side on what it was. By this time my spear only hit where it had been! It was a decent size, probably 3-4 lbs.
Ah well, some good swims in the best viz I've seen for some time, and lots of fish seen.
