Ok, well you are going to need a suit to start with & you are not going to get one over here.
Jersey has a fantastic shop called Apnea that and would be by far your best bet.... get all you need in one hit!
You can buy online or best of all get on the condor and visit Apnea as the shop owner can advise on what is best for you.
A lot of us use custom made to measure suits but if you are of an average size and shape, you can get a great suit off the peg.

Brilliant, thanks for your advice. I am over in Jersey Monday so I will call into the shop and get kitted out.
That is probably the best bit of advice that a beginner could be given. Budget permitting, getting the right gear makes the experience so much more pleasurable. So many buy a speargun and scuba fins (as I did,) then struggle to catch anything and get out of the water frustrated and cold.
I would contact the shop and let them know you are coming as Neil is not always there himself.

I have Master frog fins which effectively are extended scuba fins, I want to get some full footed fins but hear you need to have these fitted, rather than take a chance buying your foot size off the internet
I guess a trip to the apnea store is needed
For this. Micks fishing supplies has Beuchat mundial sport fins, anyone know if these are any good as entry fins?
I've liked the Cressi frog fins as I can where boots for getting over rocks, but the general opinion seems full footed are superior for spearing?
I'm not diving deep, only up to 10 metres
matt probly the best option would be to try other peoples fins next week at the fish in. to get the right size. then with say an omer footpocket you can choose the right fin to go with that footpocket.
you can get some variation by wearing different thickness socks. dont go too small or you will be suffering cramps lots.

Fins that are good for surface swimming are probably more important than for diving deep, plenty of threads on the forum....
If you buy long fins don't throw away your short fins, hunting in the shallow weed is a nightmare with long fins as is trying to stand up in the shallows to load your gun or string a fish. It is extremely difficult and annoying!
If you hunt for lobster then long fins are even worse, for me at least!
Long fins are great for flatfishing or hunting fish in deep water, swimming long distances & beating the tide - or at least they are once you are used to them & your calf muscles stop cramping up!

I have a sporasub camo weight vest for sale. Size xl and in great shape, only for sale due to buying a thinner wet suit and require a smaller size vest. £10
I bought some omer stingray camo fins a few months ago and they are great, especially when your swimming up tide or large distances. Most definitely would recommend either going to apnea to try on first or try someone else's like Jonny said. I was a totally different size to what I would have ordered! I use 3mm immersion socks and they are great too. Fins were £67 and the socks were £12 your more than welcome to take a look sometime. I am a shoe size 9 so not sure if that will be any good for you to try.

Cheers for all the advice on the fins, I did do some searches on the site but got a bit lost in all the info, im a size 10 so would be great if there is someone's I could try next week and go from there
