Holiday Guernsey 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Cat from weymouth cost myself and 1 shot about £22 return last year.Takes about 2 1/2 hours and they looked after all our kit for us aswell.Price for taking car was nearer to £100.Parking in weymouth could be a pain but when the ferry leaves at 6.30am there are always places.Could leave some cars at my house and all jump in one or two cars down to weymouth.

Count me in last year was the mutt's...Top place with top people....Pictures of last years trip are on my members gallery on the forum.

Midweek travel is usaually cheaper than weekend and less busy.3 days would be good then i might catch something..

Foxfish, I have a tide prediction program up to 2009 which I checked this year against the tide books and it is always within 10 minutes and 0.1m so accurate enough. Can let you have some info if you like. Tell me what you want.

Andy

Great idea Foxy, you'd all be welcome chaps (and chapettes).

Water temp: July, about 17-18ish degs I think
Depth: 1ft to as deep as you can go
Regs: None, no licence
Suit: 5mm ideal, though you may get away with 3mm in July
Poisonous Snakes: Not that I know of!

You can take the car on the Cat, yes, which goes from Poole or Weymouth and takes 3 hours (yes at 30knots), there is also a conventional ferry going from Portsmouth but that take 10ish hours. www.condorferries.com for more info. With both flights and the ferry the sooner you book the cheaper it is.

Only just found this thread. Count me in for a return trip (providing i'm welcome back!). Had an awesome day last year and would certainly be up for making it a couple at least next year.

My twopence worth.

Any of you guys are welcome here anytime and if the rest of you are as nice blokes as John and Alex then so much the better :friday .

Guernsey can be a very expensive place to get to and to stay in. The secret is to look for some good deals. Travel, several days accommodation and a share of a hire car was on offer last year from £100 per person. Fights can be had for as little as £10 one way but that's ex tax (another £20+) and never when you want. Flights are nearer £100+ return, if you're lucky. The day trip thing is good, with details as laid out by Glowworm. You will not beat that for a cheap "taster" of guernsey. However with a daytrip, or even a weekend you've gotta be lucky with the weather. A longer time will obviously give a better chance of good conditions at least some of the time. End of July (approx 20th onward) is better for me as I'll be on holiday.

Spagehetti, DB Member Fabio's brother and 2 of his mates drove from Italy to St Malo in France where they caught a car ferry ride to Guernsey. Took less than a day with 3 of them sharing the driving. You (or me) could PM Fabio if your interested. They brought their car loaded with Italian wine and took it back loaded with Guernsey lobsters (live) and bass (on ice).

Anyone can post here or PM me if you want info. If you don't ask you wont know .

Dave

In facts OMD I was wandering how to bring there by airplane a decent share of wine added to essential luggage and dive gear: a huge luggage to carry, and a serious issue indeed, since my idea of "decent share of wine" means "lots-of-wine".
Thanks for the input. However, there's 9 months for any arrangement.
Do you think we should hurry up to book accomodations?

Spaghetti (and anyone else);

Actually we have a lot of wine over here, including some very good Italian wines and it's cheap. Our taxes are quite low and most wine is about £4 a bottle (6 euros per 75cl bottle) :friday . Of course you can pay a lot more but £4 bottles usually taste okay. Larger is £2 - £2.50 a pint in a pub or a LOT less in cans from a supermarket. You can buy lobsters through a contact of mine for £5 a pound (16 euros a kilo) or you could try to catch your own.

Check out Guernsey on the net as there is a lot of information from the tourist board etc about accomodation, travel etc.

Hi Dave just a quickie, which part of the island do we need to look for accommodation so as not to be to far apart from each other.
Would it be a good idea for all that are coming to look to book in the same area?

Guernsey is very small. It's about 11 miles north to south and is triangular with the east west base being about 7 miles. The area is 25 square miles but has 500 miles of roads. If you have a car nowhere is very far. Max journey is 25 minutes from one end of the island to the other, mainly due to traffic and a max 35 MPH speed limit. Mart, Derek, me, Ed, Colin all live in the north but we all have wheels if you don't have your car and a good deal is more important than location for accomodation.

Thanks Dave all we need now is a date that we all can make.
I’m away on the family holiday mid July so anytime after the 25th would be great for me although I will be more than happy to slot in with everybody else.

Guernsey is a triangle measuring 3 miles by 9 miles! If you have transport I dont think it will matter that much. Having said that, the L'Eree hotel is featured quite a lot & is as far away from my house as you can get. Even then this would only be a problem if you wanted to socialise in the evening, drink driving is not tolerated in Guernsey & taxis are very expensive. The peninsula hotel is right on the sea front, Vazon bay hotel is as cheap as chips & fun!

Thanks Mart, the social side of something like this is very important to me as I would think it is to all that are coming so it would be nice to all be in the same area maybe in staggering distance from you boys?:friday

By next summer i should have bought a bigger van by then something like a short wheel transit or similar. Ill be happy load that up with gear n stick that on the ferry if that helps!?
this might be a silly question but are girlsfriends/wives allowed on this trip? otherwise i have to start licking ass now!

Great Andy, is it possible to see all of July?
Have emailed you. I wouldn't rely on the times etc for safety bt for booking a holiday they are fine.

Seems there is some confusion over how small we are, so I got the digimap up and measured it!

Fort Doyle to St Martins Point (North/South): 9,500m = Approx 6 miles
St Martins Point to Pezeries Point (East/West):10,800m= Approx 6.8miles
Pezeries Point to Fort Doyle (The Hypotenuse):14,400m= Approx 9 miles

Hope that clears things up a bit! :t

I'm flexible with any dates in July and agree about staying together for the evenings *ahem* "social" activities; count me in if any group bookings are being considered.

OK I have finally managed to get the tide info, in the end I had to photograph my monitor screen!
Unfortunately there are no big tides in the month, if Dave, Tom or any other Guernsey spearo would like to suggest the best looking tide?
Anyhow it probably doesn't matter that much but I think the next step is to decide on a date.
