Thanks Sf , I was looking up pics on the net and couldn't really tell. Right enough there is a bird table nearby that lots of small birds visit. My daughter seen it yesterday but it was gone before I could get the camera out, it hung around a bit longer this evening on a tree branch overhanging the fish pond. Watched it hovering over a field for a while before the crows chased it away...seen a pair of them a couple of weeks ago off in the distance. Maybe they're breeding nearby.
The ones hovering are usually kestrels. That's a sparrowhawk. They're about the same size but the kestrel has dark eyes whereas the spar has light, almost glaring eyes. They also hunt differently, the kestrel hovering to try and spot mice or voles while the sparrowhawk flies fast along hedgerows and round obstacles, over walls etc. changing sides at high speed, trying to ambush small birds. The kestrel is browner than the spar too and the male kestrel has a blueish grey head. I'll scan in a photo later if I can find it.
I found the photo but it's nowhere near as good as yours so I'm not scanning it in. Suffice to say the kestrels back is a lovely rich chestnut brown whereas the sparrowhawk is much greyer with a lighter breast. Both beautiful in my opinion!

That would explain it....I've seen the Kestrels for the last couple of years but they are usually off hovering in the distance and occasionally swoop down on their prey. I took these few shots just before christmas but the light was very low in the sky, rapidly fading and I don't have a really long telephoto lens so they're not terribly clear. The Sparrowhawk only showed up a few days ago and came right in to the front garden, even though it was dusky I was able to get a few nice shots, this is about the best one I managed to get. They're both really beautiful to observe...I'll keep the camera handy from now on.

BTW Dave, I meant to comment earlier....your dogs are lovely, fantastic looking animals :).

Lovely pic Dave... awesome looking dog.
A deerhound cross would have been no.1 for us (missus has been following this guys for ages https://www.facebook.com/MydogObie )
but we are really happy with "Jedi" the Saluki... I'll have to take a few pics myself.
Been to sick to train him (wont be right for another 2-3 weeks) but I'll have to start at the basics.
I havent even looked for ground for him yet to try for rabits, i'd prefer if I could find a mask an snorkle that would fit him :)
Will see how he is at the end of summer.

In other news... this is the Irish spearing thread... not the wildlife thread!!
Who will catch the first bass of 2014... I usually am on them by March, but doubt I'll be out for a while... no winter scallops either?

Dogs ,Birds, sooner late April comes the better, wouldn't mind seen some fish, what way did you cook the sparrow hawk Der ?:ROFLMAO:

Lol...he came pre-stuffed with Goldfinch
Might start to see a few decent flounder in the next week or two but at least mid april at earliest before we see any Bass around here. Its normally a few weeks after Bd starts shooting them they move up here. Hope this year is as warm as last year, just need the weather to settle down a bit earlier than last.

Looks like it's visiting Scotland too - 2 days off booked :D:D:D:D

Have been out in the water the last 9 winters in Ireland and this one has been the mildest, not to sure what the water temp is now though.
You heading out for scallops Rob?

tempted, but using the weather to do some repairs to the boat...
If I can, I might get out for a quick dip to grab a bass at the weekend, but no plans really.

Going to leave the diving for abit as not sure there would be much around, might take the kayak out for some mackerel over the weekend though

Are there any mackeral around at the minute? I'd be tempted to do the same here if there are.

Hi lads is anybody know regulations for possession of power band spearguns in ireland

one of the lads get his guns confiscated by Garda in Dublin and was told it is illegal to keep them .
did i miss something lately but i was sure you have to register pneumatic ones and rubber ones ok.

All year round in the harbour... there are a few places you can be sure to get them!

Craig, I usually just figure out what I want and shop around... my last few orders came from sports direct
http://www.sportsdirect.com/fishing?src=bot-4-fishing-140308

previous to that I got some boat stuff from (rod holders and braid)
http://www.fishingmegastore.com/

And I got my boat rods from
https://www.tacklebargains.co.uk/

In between that id usually use ebay for disposable cheap lures and local fish store for weights.

I'm not much of a tackle tart as the cheapest will catch fish if they are there, but some things like braid and the rod holders need to be good quality.

Anyone got an idea what the viz would be like on Saturday.... Very tempted to venture out see if there's any crabs in to breed...
