The ones hovering are usually kestrels. That's a sparrowhawk. They're about the same size but the kestrel has dark eyes whereas the spar has light, almost glaring eyes. They also hunt differently, the kestrel hovering to try and spot mice or voles while the sparrowhawk flies fast along hedgerows and round obstacles, over walls etc. changing sides at high speed, trying to ambush small birds. The kestrel is browner than the spar too and the male kestrel has a blueish grey head. I'll scan in a photo later if I can find it.Thanks Sf , I was looking up pics on the net and couldn't really tell. Right enough there is a bird table nearby that lots of small birds visit. My daughter seen it yesterday but it was gone before I could get the camera out, it hung around a bit longer this evening on a tree branch overhanging the fish pond. Watched it hovering over a field for a while before the crows chased it away...seen a pair of them a couple of weeks ago off in the distance. Maybe they're breeding nearby.
I found the photo but it's nowhere near as good as yours so I'm not scanning it in. Suffice to say the kestrels back is a lovely rich chestnut brown whereas the sparrowhawk is much greyer with a lighter breast. Both beautiful in my opinion!
