Ireland 2015

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Conditions looked good for inshore today so I took a day off and went to look for bass. I've tried a couple off times already but was thwarted by rough seas/bad visibility but I've seen fish and knew they were there!!! I chose a place nearby which does well early season and as far as I know, no-one else spearfishes there.
Vis was middling but plenty of fish around. I must have seen twenty or thirty in a couple of hours, most in groups of 3 or 4. I shot one of around 3 to 4lb (I didn't have my scale and filleted it before coming back) I also tried for a bigger one but spooked it before I got lined up.
I'm posting a pic from my last scallop trip too and the water's so cold still that I may go scalloping again yet.

Well done on the scallops and bass Sunfish, got out for the second time in two weeks today but vis was really poor and only seen a couple of small flatties as they scooted away from me, was probably more there but impossible to see. Water temp was 12°c for the most part but got a bit warmer near the rocks at the shore, good bit of cover in the weeds so hopefully won't be too much longer before some fish start showing up...just in time for the ban.

Looking good sunfish,
Ive been on a couple of scalloping sojourns myself, good grief the water is still Baltic.
Crazy the difference diving vs surfing.

On another note looking to get some new weights, I've got the lead and now I'm trying to find a mold. I know there was a Canadian guy on here a few years back that did some pretty funky looking ones but can seem to find him now. Sunfish where did you get your weights or did you make a mold?

Looking forward to the warmer water and contributing to the forum, loved reading the post between here and the lads across the water. Hopefully I can give some good shots and stories without getting a carload of unscrupulous individuals arriving up but it would be great to get everyone posting again.

Hi Fla, I got the mold from the Canadian guy!!!! I don't remember his name but I can probably find his details if I have a look around. Maybe in an old email. I'll get back to you.

Hi again, I found his details but can't find how to PM you????? How does this work now? A lot seems to have changed on here. Seems like I'm no longer a donator, although I'm sure money is still removed from my bank each January!!!!

Thanks Sunfish,

If he's here then I just haven't looked hard enough, I'll have another gawk and dig a bit deeper this time.
Do you recommend his molds?

Found him, sent the email. If anyone is looking to get a mould maybe we can share the cost of the shipping. Give me a shout if you're interested.

Fla, I like the weights well enough. They can move a bit on the belt sometimes, when you're carrying it but once it's on they're fine.

First trip out yesterday, took the kayak to a spot I have been meaning to dive for the last couple of years.
Viz was only around 2mtrs, so a quick look around the shallows to scout out for Bass come June, it looked promising with lots of Mullet and a couple of big male spiders, but no Bass spotted. I know they are there though so will be heading back.

Then tried for Razorclams in about 4 to 5mtrs of water, never knew a clam could be so quick but ended up with around 10, good fun once you know what to look for and there seemed plenty in this spot.

I have a regular shape weight mold, made by the same fella in canada. Happy to lend it out for people to make their own weights.

I usually just use the salt in the hole trick...
Gimme a shout when you are heading out next, few dives for them sounds like a great way to get back to shape.

Anyone catching any Mackerel yet, getting abit tired of buying it from Aldi..

Getting to my last few bags in freezer. Boat sold so I guess it could be aldi for me too

Had. Fantastic day on the water with Craig last week hunting pollock, next up.... Bass.

Anyone been out?? There've been some fantastic days for spearing this summer but it's been very quiet on this thread.
Walking the dogs on the beach this morning the water was as smooth as glass. I'd been fancying a bass for dinner so I set out at 12.00 and reached my spot at 12.30, just as the tide was turning. Later than I'd have liked but the best I could manage. Vis was a bit patchy in places but mostly pretty good, although the water had now gone a bit choppier in the seabreeze. I saw two decent fish, which swam off before I got lined up, then a shoal of schoolies (2 and 3 pounders) which I let swim on. Finally got this five pounder and got out.

It took me almost two hours. I must be slipping in my old age.

Nice bass Sunfish, I've had the worst season ever, I haven't taken a bass yet this year. I went out several times but the conditions have been all wrong, either the vis was terrible or the cover so thick I couldn't line up for a shot in time. To add insult to injury, someone was netting in a favourite spot of mine, during the ban there was a shoal of 70+ bass and plenty of mullet and other fish but when I went out at the end of June I didn't see a single fish. I tried the area every second day for a week and still nothing until I seen a rope that was left attached to a rock to suspend a net. It's very disheartening.

You have my sympathies Derek. I suspect that area may take a couple of years to recover as the inshore bass in Ireland seem to return to their own area as far as I can tell. I know I've seen certain individuals in more or less the same place in successive summers.
Please let me know if and when fish re appear as this is a subject that interests me a lot.

Will do Sunfish...I hope to have a look there again in a week or two, if this horrible weather gives us a break for a few days. The vis around here hasn't settled down at all this year, a couple of weeks in early June was the best so far. Think I'll have to find a few new spots a bit bit further afield.

Seems that the viz is at last clearing up, was out for the first time this year in my regular haunts and viz ranged from 1mtr to 4mtr.
Quite alot of the red bloom on the surface but pretty clear once you dived past it, was quite patchy aswell.

Arrived at high tide and took a couple of decent flatfish, no Bass around for the first hour, then started to see a few in amongst the Mullet, ended taking one and pulling out of another...

Reckon I might even try a night dive tonight, may even try the Turbot spot Rob...

I got out last Saturday for a dive on that spot again, I went out 800m along a reef and covered a fair bit of ground all around it in a 3.5 hour period. The cover and conditions were ideal for Bass but no Bass or Mullet were to be seen, a few big wrasse and a dozen or so dogfish and that was it.
