I wouldn't like to go too far offshore in it. I fear the repair kit might prove to be an important accessory.
Yesterday (Saturday) I went out West again in search of big pollack. I didn't find any but I did find a new cove with a shoal of 4 and 5 pounders. I'll be back there because there should be something bigger around there if they're there. It's only accessable from the sea so it's a good bet it's never been fished.
Tomorrow I was going with Baldyfish to dive the turbot bank, but his boat prop's broken so that'll have to wait. The forecast looks too good to waste so I'll take the kayak and head West again. There's spot I've been looking at on the chart, a line of broken rock islands at right angles to the tide flow.

Hello chaps

Came back from france after a rod bass fishing trip in Brittany and went to Howth by the red rock for a quick dive to try my new fins.

Didn't see a single fish above 3cm????? this place is full of small green crab but no fish at all looks like a desert....

Seen two spider crab kept one for the table.

Went spining for mackerel in the harbourg and got 6 for the table. While i was fishing saw a shoal of big mullet by the surface cant wait for bass closing season ending.

Hi to all

Got them 2 boys on saturday.There were a few around but smaller.

Plankton boom is happening.

Went today for rock fishing and i saw 2 basking sharks about 50 meters from the spot i was.

About 4-5 meters long i suppose.Magnificent creature.

The plankton is here too but I have'nt seen any basking sharks yet. I suppose they'll be here soon as the two usually come together. Enjoy the pollack.
I went out West yesterday. While paddling towards the area I wanted to search I stopped to watch a seal and noticed sandeels breaking the surface. I thought seals must be after them and hopped over the side for a look. I found myself in a shoal of pollack, fish of 3 to 6 pounds. I dived to this one shoal for an hour and a half and thought I spotted a bigger fish once or twice but couldn't be certain.
I then carried on to islands but by now the tide was running too strongly to dive the channels though I'll check it again as it definately looks good.
I couldn't find the pollack shoal again. I took no fish as I still have fillets but we're running low so I'll start taking some soon.
When I got the car loaded and ready to go I sat for a few minutes watching the sunlight sparkling off the sea.

unfortunately no. not yet anyway, a few members of a dive club I was in snorkelled with one last year. It was heading straight for one of the girls, mouth open. She hadn't much experience in water and believed she was to end her days as shark bait But it turned at the last minute, everybody present said it was a fantastic experience

the basking sharks are around west cork now but should be here soon as always. was out once while my brother and sister snorkelled with them but i was stuck as dry cox:rcard. this year ill be doing it though if my suit ever arrives from spearo.co.uk. 2 months tomorrow waiting for it and getting impatient. anybody else have problems ordering from them??
did you get out this weekend denis? i was diving the aud from a friends boat this weekend and didnt get out spearing.

Yeah I'm waiting a month now for a delivery from spearo UK. Maybe its just slow postage from the UK to Ireland, I don't know. Try giving him a call, he'll be honest enough about it

So have any of you guys ever been in the water with a basking shark?

Last spring I'd seen quite a few by now. On April the 19th I was heading back to my launching spot when I saw one almost twice the length of my kayak.(The kayak's 15ft). I paddled up near and while I was putting on my mask and snorkel it came over for a look and swam underneath. I hopped over the side and hung by one hand, peering into the hazy visibility, when it came back. We looked at each other headon from 6 feet. After a few seconds looking at each other it sank away and submerged.
Often the very plankton they're feeding on makes the water too milky to see them very well.
Last spring was a particularly good one for spotting them though. Another day, off Galley head, I was breathing up on the surface when a fifteen footer swam a metre below me from behind. This kind of thing can make you start a bit when you're not expecting it. Their tails have triangular bits on the top lobe, just like the tails of more dangerous sharks.

I was out with bass hunter on Friday evening with my brother and another friend who has a boat sea was flat calm but very milky due to the good weather. we got a few good enough sized pollock but i know i missed a few bigger ones towards the end. We bbq them that night. was out again yesterday with much the same vis and was swimmiong without the suit for a half hour afterwards. cold at the start but not too bad overall.
fair play to richie for making the effort to travel west for non existant surf but at least he got some fish. Hope your enjoying portugal richie.

Funny you should ask, Got through to spearo.co.uk today on the fifth attempt. Waiting 2 months and still dont have a date for delivery, the problem seems to be all down to Elios. Have to say he did offer a full refund but after waiting for so long I declined

Actually, as a follow on from my last message, I just got an email from Dave in SpearoUK.

For some unknown reason, the package was returned to him, so there must have been some problem with the delivery company.

He's been very decent about it and offered me a refund, so I'm happy with that.

Just got mail from spearo.co.uk, I should have my suit by next week. Went to Nohoval with baldyfish yesterday evening looking for pollock and didn't see a single one. Must be the first time ever. There was a lot of crab though spider and edible. Johnny got a decent mixed bag I was happy with 2 edibles. A very good evening, even though the vis wasn't great. Met a diver who was in Beara over the weekend with his club, the vis was up to 20 metres at depth!! Hopefully some will come my way soon.

Enjoy the crabs lads. I'm off for a swim after I do the school run and I might look for some myself. I'm not working tonight so I'll have time to deal with crab.
Dennis, I've found the vis to be better when I'm diving near deep water or near to where the tidal currents are strong.

those crab were good! the vis is always better out west. seems to be a lot of growth and plankton in the water around the harbour. should hopefully start clearing up soon enough....
