Ireland spearing 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Hi Togo, I use a reel and line the same way. Often pollack tangle in the kelp if they can. I can just loosen the drag on the reel and go up for a breath, then swim down when I'm ready, to kill the fish and un tangle the line.

Togo, would those deaths result from inadequate surface times. I've read on this forum that good practice involves surface intervals double that of dive time.
Hi Dennis, the main reason for surface time being double dive time is to avoid DCI (bends) if you make repeated dives over a long period. If you're making repeat dives deeper than 60ft/20metres then surface intervals of three times dive time are recomended.
Having said this I think a good surface time does help relax all muscles, which must help in letting oxygen build up in the blood, and give time for both venous and arterial blood to take as much O2 as they can hold.
That's my take on it anyway.

very rare to get DCI on a freedive. you could probably show symptoms if you were repeat diving to 60-90 feet for the best part of a day(commercial spearos) but its still very very rare.
the main reason for a breathe up 2-3 times your dive time is to reduce the chances of SWBO. 3 main reasons this happens is due to hyperventilation before a dive, depth and time, and workload. If your out of breath or breathing heavily from the last dive your going to reduce your o2 level to critical point faster and blackout. also when your breathing faster from finning on a previous dive you artificially lower you co2 level which makes your body think you can hold your breath longer but on ascent your pp02 plummets with the pressure drop and you blackout that way too.
so make sure you breathe up well and dont dive if your not relaxed.
johnny.

If you're reasonably fit, one minute relaxing on the surface will see your heartrate back down low and o2 levels back up. If you're diving for three or four hours, making 60 or 70 dives, or more, then DCI is more of a possibility than you might think. You can have minor effects from it without having a full blown case of "the bends".
A couple of years ago I had an MRI scan after a horseriding accident and numerous small "lumps" showed up in my spine. I suspect these were due to DCI as the doctor said they were not recent.
When you go past one minute on the surface and your breathing deep and slow you're probably lowering your CO2 below normal anyway. Lets hope not dangerously low.

If you want to find out a lot about surface times, SWB, DCI, etc look on the freediving section, but even there they don't allways agree with each other.
I do take double divetime on the surface and I consider relaxation very important, not only on the surface but also while swimming below it. I try to use wide slow relaxed sweeps of the longfins, not to tense any muscle I'm not swimming with, and not to race for the surface.

sounds about right dave.
just became a CFT snorkel instructor last night after a lot of exams and training:)
Shallow water blackout was my lecture to give the jury hence the big speill aboverofl

Thanks for the info guys. Sorry for the late reply and thus the derail, been in the mountains.
Togo - Sorry to hear about the guns getting screwed up. I hope that doesn't happen to me. I am definately going to rig my bouy to take a flag.

Sunfish - My 110 tuna does have double 16mm bands, but I am thinking about moving it to a single 20mm for better conditions in Ireland. I think I'm going to get a 80cm aswell as the 90 now.

I am moving to Carlow for a bit and probably Dublin afterwards, but I am going to be planning on heading to the South and West as often as possible for the weekends. I have been looking at possibly getting a boat as well, so that will open up a lot more dive sites.

Cheers

I met up with Doc in Kinsale today. We had a dive just inside the estuary in one of Donnachad's spots!
I have to say that it looked a cracking spot for bass. Unfortunately the vis was about 45cm in most places. We saw a few mullet and Doc managed to spear a nice one of 3.8lbs.
I'd like to have a look there when the vis is better.
Good luck with the race Steve and I hope the vis is better in Brittany.

Hello guys good news about my guns Rob Allen is gone send me free of charge all goods damaged I have to say that they have a really good after sales service and I will recommend this make.

For Zimgonzo I'll suggest to have a 80 and a 100 sparid as water on west and south coast are good. I use to fish in france with very poor visibility 2m and 70 gun is very good for that and hole fishing.

Will be in two weeks time as I'm on call this week. Will try to go where the water is clear enought as wind will be quite strong next wenesday.

Lets keep in touch if guys living by the sea in Waterford can give the infos for dublin spearos cheers Togo

Hello chaps you can buy RA guns from Collin Chester in UK he's selling RA gear for UK and you don't have to pay duties. I'm getting my gear directly from the factory but when you add delivery, duty and VAT it comes nearly as the same price as Collin does, still a bit expensive.

I dont want get any european guns anymore as they've too many type and not very strong one. I used to have Excalibure OMER guns have aluminium and carbon, the aluminium barrel barrel did bent with 16mm bands and the handle couldn't really hold two bands too tough to pull the trigger. Since I've changed to RA never get disapointed even with a 120 aluminum barrel never bent with 2 bands. Those guns are really good, integral guide, spear is hard (does rust), you can change and adjust the rubber yourself (which is good when you're living in a country where you've got no spearfishing shop).

Sunfish I'll check you website

Cheers Togo

I went out yesterday evening to catch the last of the calm weather. vis was only 1-2 metres so I had to hold the gun handle by my hip and use my thumb on the trigger.
Plenty of bass were around, mostly in small groups, but they were in and out of vis so fast that snap shooting was called for. I missed my first shot then failed on a decent sized one as i had left the safety on after reloading.(First time I've done that for yearsrofl).
Next shot I hit but he was so small I'm not going to post a picture:(.(Was legal though).
After I saw more fish but was being so careful that I got off no more shots.
I then drifted up the estuary 'til the tide turned then drifted back down but saw no fish there.

Hi sunfish now you know why it's good to have the choice of lenght specially in 2m visibility a 60 or 70 gun would have been good for that. I love fish when bass arround in poor visibility with small gun.

Cheers Togo

Hi dudes, got my elios suit this week and tried it out in lough ine this morning, have to say i'm very impressed with open cell suits. I was warm enough to really relax breathing up and got 16 metres on my third dive a personal best for me. No spearing there so just a swim around. hope the weather improves this week

Good suits eh? Did Johnny get his yet?
The weather isn't really forecast to improve 'til Monday week so I'm going to take a look at the sea tomorrow and see if I can get another dive in before it really kicks off.
