I swam out and left him in peace. So far as I know he showed no aggression 'til I turned and looked straight into his eyes. I think he was there all along but I didn't notice him as I was scanning all the corners and cracks. On the other hand he may have followed me in. They do seem to follow me around when I'm crab and lobstering.
a guy i know had a similar experience with a seal on scuba, in a cave. only the seal rammed him a few times :blackeye. my friend was on the outside side of the cave, and the seal on the inside however.
can't wait to get back home and get me some mackerel! should be home the first of september, and in the water asap after that.

It was raining this morning and there wasn't much I could get on with, so I decided to take a quick shore dive. The wind was from the East and the swell was from the West. Neither was too strong so I went for the swell and chose a nice rocky, Southwest facing bit of shore.
I was hoping to find bream but they haven't shown up this year yet.
I found a few mullet and loads of bass, up to 5lbs or so. I took one of each, Bass 4.7lbs, mullet 4.1lbs.
With spidercrab for breakfast the force was in me indeed.

funny you said that sunfish. had a seal follow me on long strand 2 weeks back. stayed within 15 metres at all times for nearly half an hour! sunday in my kayak i was being followed too! I think they might be trying to take over!!:martial

Hi all
irish newbie here, this seems to be were all the talk is going on just thought id say hello, not hijacking the thread.
thats some thread you've got going it took me awhile to read through it.
at the minute i just do a bit of snorkleling, mostly around sligo.
managed to get down to omey island in galway last weekend, very nice spot if the weathers good but you do have to camp.
thinking of starting spearfishing, looking at getting the begginers kit from spearo.co.uk, any experience of the site, dave the guy that runs it seems very helpful.

Hi maddan welcome to DB, Dave is a member on the forum and you can find him on the Cornwall thread, he's recently posted some video's which are worth a good watch.
If you got the money then the starter kit is good value. Other wise your snorkeling gear will do for the time been.

Hi Dan, Scott's list looks good.Gun should be 75 or 90. A 90cm has a better range and accuracy when visibility is good. A 75cm is better when visibility is low.
If you haven't got a wetsuit and you're thinking of buying one, go for a spearfishing type. 5ml is a good all round thickness.

thanks everyone for the welcome and advice,
i think if i can get the money together over the next month and with the exchange rate still not to bad (though it is forecast to get worse) ill get the begginers set from spearo.co.uk.
fcallagy im afraid im stuck in dublin this weekend helping some one take down a big garden shed (feel like burning it down at this stage). thanks for the invite ill give a you a shout when i get back. then im off to the med just at the border between france and spain beside a town called cerbere, i think ill give it a try out there if i can pick up a half decent speargun.
That actually leads to next question, if i do pick up a pnuematic gun in france (they seem the most common in the local shops) can i bring it back to ireland or is it going to be confiscated, if so ill leave it out in france.
its just i thought i say a post/thread about pnuematics being counted as firearms. i find this a bit weird, do spearguns have serial codes stamped into there tubes and if they do count as firearms can you obtain a licence like a rifle or shotgun.

Hi Dan I'm french and have to say that you can find aswell rubber speargun wich i recommend to you avoiding licence matters and technical problems if you need to send it back. Best thing is to get a rubber one for a start with a extra wishbone and few things as you wont be able to find it in ireland.

general consenus is pneumatic needs a license which may be hard to obtain depending on the gaurd in question that deals with licenseing. band may be a better option as it shouldn't cause any major hassle. See if you can try out different gear while your there to get an idea of what suits you and we will all expect a full trip report when you get back with pictures of the tuna.

yep thats the plan buy a cheap lilo, paddle out somewhere near the centre and tie some rocks to my legs to get me to the bottom fast, and then its just a simple a simple matter of waiting for the tuna to swim to me, stab him with a kitchen knife on the end of a stick and take it from there.roflroflrofl.
i will give a proper trip report when i get back, i already know the area it is full of fish, but im unsure of species and what sort of sizes they get to, ill need to do some research and ask some questions before i start before i end up in trouble with the law. the bay where the apartment complex is next door to a bay that is a protected area, so even if the spearfishing goes pearshaped i should see some nice stuff.
any ideas for a cheap waterproof camera, there was anice waterproof one in lidl 4 months back, i was so pissed off wheni missed it.
