Went out for a splash tonight.
Was expecting low vis and was not disappointed
Tried a new spot, which was buzzing... all species and in shoals!! not on their own!
Was only in for about 30mins as the family were on the beach and my cheap surfsuit had a hole that black witch failed to fix....
Anyway, vis was at .5m-1m and there were still plenty to shoot at!!
Found a holding spot in some string weed at low tide. This was one of the smaller fish but a nice size all the same. Shot through the eye and out the mouth so no damage to the fillets
Made nice thai fishcakes with them.... first mullet = great result.... yummy fish

Sea conditions have been bad for over a week now but do seem to be improving. You'd better bring some mediterranean weather with you.

Well I stayed quite shallow, about 3ft I'd say, as there was so much action! Out further I reckon vis would have been over 2-3m at this spot!

I went to a local spot at lunchtime today to check what vis might be like there. I stayed shallow (2 metres and less) and there was a fair bit of surge. Vis was short enough at around 2 metres or less but there were plenty of fish, mostly bass. Most of these were schoolies of 2.5 to 3 pounds with occasional 4 to 5 pound fish.
I took three shots at bigger fish but each time the surge pushed me and I missed completely.:head
At least I didn't wound anything.
I think the visibility will improve very fast as soon as the sea calms a bit. I'm planning to take out the kayak on Friday to look for pollack.

just back from a great dive on scuba. dived the santos, a dredger. great dive, massive conger, pout and lobster@ 31M. got an email from elios and my suit has been sent! record time too, only 3 weeks!! planning an eve dive fri so ill give u a shout rob. will u be around??
Hey guys, just checking in. Pitty about the recent bad weather. Have spent the past few months mainly concentrating on crustaceans with varying success. looking forward to big pollock in the next few weeks if the weather ever calms down. Good to see lots of new faces.
Nah man, I'm working till 8pm then training till 10pm. I did check out the coast along the place I told you about and came accross another 5/6 potentials...
I went out a few days ago to the place that Dennis mentioned and yes, there are flatfish, bass and mullet
(saw a few plaice... but oddly not in sand they were hiding in the stringweed about 2/3 inches from the bottom??????)Plenty of fishing out east, no need to waste your petrol
Hmmmm.... Maybe if the weather improves tomorrow, I may re-adjust my plans

great stuff rob. ill be planning to be in the water at 5pm tomorrow. not sure what spot to go to but it will be east. ive dived 3 spots where i know im guaranteed at least 1 bass per visit but wanna try elsewhere so gimme a buzz if ur up for it!! welcome back abusingelves. missed ya........:chatup
Took out the kayak today hoping to get big pollack. The first spot I tried I found fish to 3lb max and a strongish current so I soon moved on.
My next place had a bit of current running too but it seemed to have some bigger fish. I saw pollack that looked around the 5 to 6 pound mark but was waiting for something bigger:martial.
After 35 aspettos I gave it up and paddled for a nearby bass spot, trailing a string of mackeral feathers on my small telescopic fishing rod. I got a few mackeral on the way then set to work looking for bass. No biggies to be seen but I got a nice table fish of 4.3 pounds so a mixed bag.
Now I'm looking forward to eating some fresh fried mackeral with salad, potatoes and broad beans, all from my allotment.
My next place had a bit of current running too but it seemed to have some bigger fish. I saw pollack that looked around the 5 to 6 pound mark but was waiting for something bigger:martial.

nice one dave! got out with bobdonny to a spot he showed me. high tide and i only saw 3 bass and took two. 6.4lb and 7lb. nice spot but not much cover on the high water. must try on the low tide next time. left bobdonny in the water determined to catch a second one as he had a big one tear off. lets see how he got on......

Arranged to go with Baldyfish to one of my good spots. Was looking forward to this big time the forecasts looked good so I took some time off work. Bout luchtime the weather started to change and I had to check bac k home for a few more local weather reports…
Sent a txt saying I'd be there in 10 minutes and took off. Somehow or another I managed to take the wrong road, but instead of doubling back and taking the correct road (which would have added 4 minutes to my trip) I decided to take a shortcut….. it ended up taking me through every single bumpy road in east cork and I'm sure I knackered my suspension in the process… added an extra 20 minutes.
But I got there at 5pm which happened to be the high tide. I was in a rush to get geared up and the lube mix wasn't as good as the previous time and I had to struggle to get the suit on. Got down to the water and was pleasantly surprised by the vis, we split up and within 2 minutes I was on to a big bass, about the 6lb mark. It was a point blank shot and I pulled the trigger but there was nothing on the spear…. whilst I was trying to figure out what happened I noticed the nylon had caught at the muzzle…. the spear stopped short.
Annoyed at this I fired earnestly at the next fish I saw, which was the 3.5lb mullet in the pic.
I was really into bass terrority here and must have seen about 20 bass to good size and even more mullet. There were plenty of large and small wrasse also, as well as other crazy small fish. I was taking it easy and enjoying the swim but couldn’t hit anything. I either stumbled onto fish scaring them, or came across a shoal and couldn't decide which one to hit before they all swam off.
When we got there the swell was ok but the heaviest I've seen there yet, if on my own I would have moved to an east facing bay. When the tide started to drop it went striaght on the wind and the swell picked up substantially. I took about 5 or 6 more shots that missed point blank, either high, low or I was pushed out of range by the swell. The swell was messing with the stalking aswell… Plenty of times I'd be pushed up a gulley onto fish scaring them away. Once stalking a guley I was pulled out by the swell and deposited on a patch of weed on top of the rock to the right… directly ontop of 3 big bass… the bass just kinda moved 2 feet in either direction and just stared me out! As if to way 'What the f..k?' but I hadn't moved my gun more than one inch before they scattered.
I also had the gun refuse to load that had me scratching my head for 5 minutes.
Towards the middle of the session I shot a 6+lb bass but again it was high and the spear went straight thru leaving the fish on the nylon. The fish put up a struggle and I could see the nylon line cutting through the fish like a knife. I grabbed the fish as best I could under the gills and when I took one hand off his back to grab my dagger it shot off tearing itself off the nylon, after that I think I will swith to mono
My weights had arrived a few days earlier and I was keen to try Feargus's tips so I put on 6kg of the 8 I bought. Immediately I realised this was too little as I was still too bouyant. So it was no lobster for me then Furthermore, my crappy nylon belt keep slipping pushing the weights from my back to my front and the buckle from the front to the back along with the stringer. The weights kept riding high and I woke up this morning with bad back pain I did spot a few massive spiders but when I grabbed the first it was missing both claws and the second was missing one claw…. not worth it. There was plenty of smaller crabs about.
In the last few minutes of the dive I saw an odd looking nose sticking out of some washed up seaweed a few feet from the shoreline, I thought it looked like the diamond shape of a ray and while I was thinking about what it was it shot out to deep water. There went my 2lb plaice…. I turned and took 3 kicks and glided looking for it… when I didn't see it I took one more kick. The plaice was directly under my fin… and it shot out as fast as anything well out of sight. That was the final nail in the coffin for me, I saw Johnny at that stage on the shore and I had one last look for my injured fish and called it a day.
