point taken but both the weights together weigh no more than 1kg i do carry nost of my weight on a belt and my vest is also quick release!! my suit is 5.5mm i tried diving with just the ankle weights and could barely brake the surface sorry if i didnt explain myself properly this is just how i have refined my weighting believe me if the belt comes off i come up like polaris!!rofl

no critisism no worries ,

peace

No worries mate, I was just highlighting to anyone just getting into spearing that there is some safety considerations. I'm sure everyone posting here is well clued in on what they are doing. No harm in raising a few eyebrows:t

Climbing Perch, them cakes look good, come on, lets have the recipe. I made fish cakes a few weeks ago and they were shithouse.

Ok first of all Thai fish cakes are made with mostly raw white fish so no potato or cooked fish avoid oily fish too.
This recipe uses rounded measurements so its easy to scale up or down if you wanna freeze some. It should make between 12-15 cakes you are gonna be frying these so try keep them reasonably thin. Try use home-made curry paste or chili paste they are easy to make and freeze for months I can post the recipes if peps want. Failing that go to an asian market or shop and pick one that looks good.
1lb(500g) white fish fillets finely ground
1 tablespoon roasted chili paste or red curry paste (I use half and half)
1 tablespoon fish sauce ( squid brand is good)
1 tablespoon cornflour
1/2 teaspon salt
20z (60g) green beans ends trimmed and finely sliced (these are for a crunch slice really thin)
6 kaffir lime leaves, spines removed and leaves finely slivered (if you can only get dried soak in a little water first)
Put the fish, chili or curry paste, fish sauce, and salt in a blender and blend till smooth. Mix with the green beans, lime leaves and cornstarch and form pattys about 2inches across and 1/2 inch thick. Fry in about 1inch of sunflower or peanut oil till brown and hot through. I have them with salad and a sweet chili dipping sauce, 4parts water to 1parts palm sugar chopped chili and corriander reduce until gloopy but dont put the corrianderin till the end or it will go black.
If you like Southeast Asian cooking try get your hands on "Savouring Sotheast Asia by Joyce Jue" all traditional and authentic recipes its not a new book by any means around since 2000 so dunno if it's still available.ENJOY:)

Hi guys,do any of you know how wind affect clarity of the sea around Dublin? Many thanks!

Hi Vasile. I have no idea, that´s a good question. I never dived before on East Ireland specially because I cannot understand really well how does the currents, tides and how´s the "formula" to get better water visibility in the sea around Dublin. Any suggestion guys?

Hi guys,do any of you know how wind affect clarity of the sea around Dublin? Many thanks!

Generally if the wind has been blowing inland ie. East, it pushes all the crap viz in. When the wind is blowing out to sea ie. West, it pushes all the crap out and the viz can be ok. There is other factors as well though. If it rains it will wash dirty water into the sea. Swell can also affect the viz.

So if the wind has been blowing west, the sun is shining and there is no swell, make sure you go for a dive. Just remember its not just on the day, it's following up to the day also.

Hope that helps.

Just wondering if anybody has dived the reef in front of Gary Lucas beach in Cork, great spot to surf in the winter and would be fishy enough I would have thought..

I would say its a very good spot given the right conditions, but I've never dived it yet. Let us know how it goes!

Fitzy, do you not find up there that an offshore wind decimates the fish? I find onshore winds push them in close?

You could be right but the viz gets so bad sometimes you wouldn't see the end of your spear.

Still jealous lads of the Champ.... well I look forward to you taking a crack of the title next weekend... game on ;)
There was porridge regan? :)

Somebody decided to claim the title BEFORE someone was out from water in the previous attempt... :p I wonder who... :p Mental note: Maybe I'll change nationality for no excuses next time rofl

No excuses :martial Amberjack time!!

Oh god don't send it to bobdonny coz he will be wearing it that morning claiming he speared a moonfish on the way to the site.

There is no claiming with my speared fish involved young man.... certainly no claims involved when one brings the fish home in a cool box!! :friday

However... when one goes to a spearing shindig and takes multiple dives over a few days and fails to land even one fish.... questions may be asked rofl :martial

Thursday looking nasty, friday its picking up... we'll have to see for sat... but our guide assures me of good conditions in at least one site regardless of the weather ;)
