Trigger fish - marinated in olive oil and garlic...griddled...
Black sole - panfried with a butter, mint and parsley sauce
Spider fish crab cakes with our own potatoes, corriander, spring onion, chili and eggs
And a fresh green salad from my garden with warm chorizo sprinkled over :)

Just the basics like ;)

Thats what its all about really, great fishing and super food...you the man :)

Great reports lads. Can't believe my trigger spot is common knowledge. Thought nobody would find it! Was gonna take ye there anyway if I made it down.
Savage taste off triggers. Hard to find but easier than wrass to shoot!
Well done lads. Sounds like ye had a blast. Gutted I couldn't make it!!

Might have something to do with the BIM publicising it ;)

Fishing in Ireland. An angler's guide to the best fishing in Ireland.

Same site says triggers are at roches point ;) I reckon just behind the island or in the harbour of roches itself ;)

And I say valentia for the next trip

Ha. I only ever got one. Wasn't too sure wat it was so left the rest swimming. I must have been spotted:-).
Spring tides at the moment. High at 8pm. Was thinking of a boat dive tomorrow after work for cod. Wat say u? Anyone up for it? Share fuel etc? Leave Cobh around 5:15pm..... Room for 3.

trust me.... ditch the boat... the kayak on the drift with those hokkais is where its at... much easier to set up drift with the hokkais ;) and easy to anchor when u see something. its easy to tow a second spearo and good fun getting towed... cheaper too! had a test run this weekend... very good setup! also when u get cold u could hop up and paddle for 15mins ;)

i would suggest the cod spot of roches or powerhead would be accessible with the kayak.

Well done on the triggers, sole etc. lads. I'm thinking I should have got off my ass and made the effort!!!
On Sunday afternoon I gave Dirk a ring and we met up East of Clon to dive a nice stretch of rocks, one of my favourite places for both bass and mullet. Vis was good and there were plenty of bass. I soon shot a goodun and decided to leave it at one. I saw only four mullet, all in the 3 to 4 pound size. I left them to swim on. Dirk got a bass too then on the way back I broke my resolve and shot another in deeper water. A lot of them seemed to be in deeper water than they usually are.
One was 6.2lbs, the other 5.4lbs.

Strange how two bass of the same length can be so different in weight but one was fat and the other lean.

Hmmmmm. Call u tomorrow bout it.
My plan was to use hokkies wit the hooks clipped off as flashers. Were on the same page....
Dave I noticed the last two times the bass were deeper and I got my last one out deep too. Strange enough as they always seem to be in shallow. Don't know what the reason behind it is........
Nice bass!!

Hi Lads,
I have a technical question, I own mares phantom fv gun with 6mm shaft and wish to change with 6.5mm threaded shaft to be able to use 3 prongs tip (can't find 6mm threaded). Is it a good idea? Will it affect performance of the gun?
Thanks for any suggestions

What would you want to shoot with a trident head?
This is a specialist type of spear that is hardly ever used in British waters - the effect of even a titanium trident head will be dramatic!! The range will be limited to a few feet & any fish hit would be badly damaged.
Trident heads were once used a lot for hole fishing, especially with air guns & in the Mediterranean where competition spearfishing often involves hunting in very close range situations.
Small air guns fitted with a trident head can be very quickly re loaded & divers can sometimes take two fish on one breath if they can find a cave or hole stuffed with fish!

Used 3prong on my first 90 gun and thought it was rubbish. Just my 2c. Prefer single tip with flopper. Clean shot and a chance of survival in a tear off situation as feargus's video shows 2/3 pages back on this thread.
Worth thinking about......
On the other hand. Crap dive tonight. Saw a mullet and a few small pollock. Took nothing. Try again soon as I was informed of cod to 3lb were caught in 6m a few yards off the cliff. Still got cod fever........

yesterday , try ed to marinate and cook conger eel . it was lovely , honestly it was very tasty fish, but ... very very bony .
I cut conger in to 5cm pieces , made a marinate with lots of garlic , shallots , thyme and bay leafs . put some red vine vinegar , olive oil, salt and pepper. left to stand for 20 min. foil raped each piece with bits of marinate . cooked in oven for about 45 min on 160 degrees C.
even my kids tasted a "snake fish" and they like a taste of it . defined getting more conger .
as well try ed to cook wrasse fish on very basic recepie . salt , pepper , oregano , lot of olive oil and bay leaf . put in cooking tray and Did Not covered with anything . oven on 180 C . it make wrasse less mushy and taste brilliant.

Mazi, it will affect the performance of the gun. regards to whether it is a good idea? Well, why do you want it in the first place?

Well, I think a crap dive in the ocean still pretty much beats a hell of a lot of other alternatives ;)

We decided to give a lash to the kayak tow with flashers technique... for this to work you need to be able to see the bottom.

I had a few things I needed to check and set up on the kayak. A man called at 3pm to talk about solar panels and by 4.30 I had to force able remove him... he just wouldn't go!!! So I never got any of the jobs done on the kayak. I quickly packed up and fecked off! halfway to the site I realised I forgot my seat and sent johnny off to pick it up. At the slip we got into a fight with a fisherman as his boat, jeep and trailer were blocking the slip and access to the parking... he came over f$%king us out of it saying that only boat owners and their trailers could park there... myself and johnny weren't backing down and when he saw 4, meter long, guns and knives come out of the car he suddenly dropped his argument :) :) :)

Was setting up the kayak and realised the transducer had come off (silicone sealant wont work, silkaflix next) so we were sonar-less. I started off towing Baldy and viz was kak from the outset.... once we got away from the muck on the shore we had about 4m viz.... which was crap on top of a 4.3 spring...

Without a FF and with Johnny's dive watch on the blink he was finding suitable ground and gauging depth the old fashioned way. Every 50m he would take a dive and guess depth and let me know the bottom. With time running out we anchored at the end of a reef at about 11m.

We had some really nice dives to 14m max of around a minute and saw plenty of fish but the cod remained elusive... I think I maybe saw one at distance but my 90cm fell short. (10kg at this depth was crazy... might try 6kg next time!)

We came across a nice shingle part in between the reef and a sand back, I saw a big flash of sand as I approached, and we were certain there would be nice flats here. But the viz was still only about 5m and the tide was ripping... also we had a long drive back in and the sun was setting so we decided to make a break for it and have a swim back along the shore.

I got about 50% there and it was tough going, the wind and swell were making me paddle 10 times with the left for every single paddle with the right. Baldy said he would try finning harder to help and it made a difference... So I put the foot down... Closer to shore I asked baldy what the floor was like and with no answer I turned around and couldnt find him... I waited for him to surface but he didn't I was getting worried then I saw a black shape finning hard about 150m behind me.... hahah, obvious design error to the towing system ;)

We made the shore but the viz was variable from 30cm to 2m and the swell was rough... completely not as forecast...
I gave up at this stage but had a nice swim ashore where we chatted to another few kayak anglers... who had an equally bad night, but we did get a few tips.

Crap dive in terms of spearing cod, but great to be out and get some depth practice all the same :)

I also forgot my camera :(

Hi Danas did you lads got any opportunity to dive on Sunday?

Regarding conger, yes it is a very bony fish, but as big as it is as less bony it will be. The area near the tail could be particulary bony, one way that I could suggest is the way that we do back home, slice it really thin and fry it. Basicly you'll be able to bite and eat everything :p

Hi Mazi,

I found only usefull the "french trident" with 3 prongs ONLY when you are fishing in an area where you need to imobilize the fish imediatly, like in wrecks or muddy holes.

Single is always in the day-by-day fishing by far the best option :)

For a week now I've been excitedly watching "Windguru" as some special weather approached. 1.5 metre swells at 18 second intervals. In the past I've found such weather to be good spearing conditions. As it got closer the days changed, wind direction changed and it shrank to almost nothing!! I chose today to go, even though it was nowhere near as good as it was originally forcast.:(:( :waterwork:waterwork
I wanted some pollack for the freezer so the approach of low tide found me anchoring the kayak over some very broken ground just off the West of the tip of a huge headland West of here. This gave me a little shelter from the SE wind and chop. Second dive I took a smalish pollack, (3.4lbs) so the game was afoot. For the rest of the session I ignored small fish in order not to scare any good ones that might be around.
The session was short as I'm out of practise and was soon cold. I made 24 dives in all, deepest 12 metres, longest 1min 14 secs, taking pollack of 7.8lbs, 7.2lbs, 5.8lbs and 3.4lbs.

Shame the special weather didn't really materialise but I had a good day out and I'm pleased with the fish.
