I did go to release 1 when I had enough for dinner and the freezer but bobdonny assured me that he would manage to eat him! Maybe it was the huge eyeballs for his daughter......

Freezer is filling up nicely now (it is a chest freezer mind!) and nothing goes to waste (eyeballs to my daughter all right!) I have 2 composting area's.... 1 dedicated solely to fish. Will have brill fertilizer for the veggies next year. No smell at all from it if covered correctly.
Heads, guts, skeleton scales fins etc all go in. Thats anything that the missus does not use first in her plants! I also freeze the mackerel carcass to put in the pots for the crabs and lobsters (one day

In his defence he also mentions 2 other reasons which puts rod fishermen in the category: "taking of bass beyond the legislated restrictions by anglers, lack of enforcement and even increased recreational activity"

Yeah when I was given the heads up about this I had to scroll through alot of links to some dead guy that was apparently quite handy with a guitar. I take your point johnny guess I just don't like being top of the list. Also this guy is making a living from bass fishing and does not enforce a C+R policy merely encourages it.Haha...

He also gives away some good hotspots to anyone with money to pay him. Once he's shown a spot to someone there's nothing to stop them going back there and showing it to all their mates who show it to all their mates etc etc.
Bass guides are in no position to preach to anyone. If he really cared about the fish he wouldn't be selling their location to "noddy" anglers who couldn't find it themselves. If that sounds a bit strong, well hey, he started it!

History of cod going back thousands of years, but its also a history of fishing and the mismanagement of fish stocks... some really interesting facts in there... like America was actually discovered hundreds of years previous by spanish and british fishermen but was never reports as they didn't want to give away their fishing spots...
Some things never change.... I'd encourage ye all to get it, got mine for 4€ second hand on ebay (love second hand books)
Some great recipies in there also, like what derek said with the roe and liver last week!

My fathers boat is a licenced saltwater flyfishing/angling boat dedicated to bass fishing.
Jim fishes a lot with us and I can assure ye all he and my father and Jim do practice catch and release.
I didnt realise until now that it was his blog but I do now.
I understand that he guides on land which I don't agree with as he exposes great spots to "noddys" but boat fishing is different as not everyone can access these spots.
I think he keeps his best spots secret and guides on other spots.
Hope this clears it up for ye. I'm not sure he is knocking spearos but simply highlighting the fact that bass are under pressure now by more methods than just rod fishing.

The guiding is definitely mercenary and I would find that hard to reconcile with conservation, how can you keep check on who is fishing the hotspots and once they are known to a wider fishing community the locations or rather the bass are at the mercy and discretion of those that will fish there.
From reading his blog he doesn't single out spearos (even if he did list us first) and he did mention unscrupulous anglers in the same sentence. He does seem genuinely concerned about conservation like the rest of us but I'm sure its hard for anyone to take his opinions or suggestions seriously when he is engaged in activities that could potentially wipe out stocks in a given area....just my tuppence worth.

I agree about the boat guiding John, if it's done carefully then no harm is done. I wouldn't even bother criticising shore guides so long as they don't have a go at me.
In fairness to Jim I didn't even read the blog as I've found the last couple of examples so depressing.
