Mares Cyrano has a luminous sight on the top of the barrel, once the fish is in range where the sight is, the spear will follow at the same point.You don't look at the spear shaft.

It is only the dry barrel guns that don't have the recoil, the standard air gun with a barrel full of water kicks like mule although it is still calmer than the sharp kick of a band gun!
I think the new style air guns with the in line triggers are much easier to aim.

I'll get one as soon as it's released and get a review up for you all. I'm interested in the length to range ratio. i.e. a smaller gun with a good range. It'll be my first dabble with air guns, I'm quite looking forward to it! I'm guessing I'll have it by around mid-June.
I'll look forward to it. I'm hoping that a one metre gun could have a pretty good long range, accurate shot.

Thanks so much for the info and the offer of the weights! I will be fine for kit as I'm driving over with a friend. I'm heading to the Easky area initially however there is a big swell on the way and variable wind conditions. After that we will be heading up towards Dunfanaghy where we will be staying from from the 18th until the 25th. ive not been in yet this year due to shoulder op and i think me fitness will be lacking! so not much bottom time, going to try and find somewhere sheltered and give it a go.

Easkey is a great spot to surf, the left is more mellower than the right. If the period is high and the swell is over 10ft then it starts to get abit wild and you might need a gun.
It works best on a S/SW wind which is predominate in Ireland and a N/W swell. You should try Lacken bay, lovely spot with real clear water.
If you need any info on spots just ask away, spent the last 8 or 9 years surfing the West coast, although more kerry, Cork and Clare than the NW but head up that way 3 or 4 times a year.
If the swell is small up in Donegal head to Tullan strand, most consistent spot in Ireland.

Tried an old spot I used to go to years back. Still full of spiders. Got 3 decent spiders, a 4 lb mullet. Missed a small lobbie. Little shit nearly had me a blackout!

Just had an interesting encounter with the fisheries board.
I went out to Roches point around 2:30 this afternoon and the guy who owns the caravan next to the car park comes up to me saying my type are not welcome around here.
I was'nt sure at first if he meant because i'm English, or due to the fact I had a speargun, turns out it was the speargun.
He then proceeded to basically tell me they practice only catch and release around the area and he had seen me take Bass a week or so ago.
Anyway after what we can call a discussion I just ignored him and went for a dive, about two hours later I see the same guy on top of the cliff obviously checking out where I was. My plan at this stage was to just totally blank him but then he comes up pointing a camera in my face telling me it's illegal to spear Bass.
I politely point him in the direction of the fisheries sign saying anglers can take x2 bass in every 24 hours, the next thing the fisheries guy pulls up behind me.
In all fairness the fisheries guy just pointed out I was in my rights to take the Bass I had, it was great to see the disappointment on the other guys face, think he was hoping I would be arrested.
In the end fisheries took my name and address saying his boss had asked him to get my details, turns out they were not sure if taking Bass by any means other than rod and line is illegal.
Just checked again on the internet, illegal to net bass but thats it..

It´s not when a stranger open his mouth and says full of confidence that it is illegal that from that moment on it is... What it is truly legal is when you know exactly what are you doing and so, you are sustained by the law, without any 2nd oppinion for something that doesn´t have a second oppinion...law it´s law and that´s it, if you want to change it, challenge it and sustain your oppinion.
In the end, that was the best possible atitude, no fears
P.S. - Few days ago I remember someone saying about a guy that was saying in this forum about a snorkel being an artificial breathing aparatus.... Well, I have an underwater fishing rod and line...I just turn it flat my fishhook, almost like a spear you see..., and guess what...I have also a rod and line!!

In all fairness they were nice enough, even taking an interest in how the gun felt to handle and the sort of range it had.
Don't want to antagonise the situation and open a can of worms..
Anyway had some fresh pan fried Bass for my dinner, made it worthwhile..

Well Chearly, I think it is all up to us somehow to "help" the fisheries on that point... We can always know by heart the law and having no problem at all to forward it in a polite and clear way. According with the legislation does anyone know exactly where can we see where the law is written...I mean available online...?
Nicely played chealy. U are well within your rights to spear bass. If u have the two officers names pm me. The guy obviously told them last time he saw u and rang them again today. There only concern is that u took no more than 2 and didn't use a net. I would have gone with u today if I had known u were heading out. I went at lunch time on my own. Next time your heading give me a bell.
Tried every spot I know around Dublin this morning they were all pants...........! max 1m vis . Well done chealy I think polite but firm is the way forward and know your rights, congrats on the bass too got any pics ?? oh found this vid its very useful for when your checking your shaftrofl

We are on shortboards. Ive surfed Easky and up to bundoran before love the place. not heard of Lacken Bay. Sounds good and thanks again for the info Chealy much appricated. Will be heading over tomorrow so may ask for advice if we get stuck.

Nice stories of the fishing guys, but without pics they are just stories 
Chealy, perhaps its better not to continue going to the same spot. There are bass all the way from roches point to waterford, we use nice quiet beaches and never have any problems.
I'm looking at the weather for wed/thurs/fri and things are looking good! Wed might even be a good day for full days diving!

Dirkjan and I went out yesterday morning to look for bass at a local spot. We left the beach just before 10, swimming north around a headland. The shallow rocks just off the headland usually hold bass but all I saw was a small one of two pounds or so.
We carried on into a small cove, not easily accessible from the land. This was where we were heading, to the weedbeds and rocks there. Dirk spotted a nice five pounder, just as it was leaving and never got off a shot.
I saw nothing as we swam the whole length of the cove. When I turned to come back I was thinking about something else when I swam round a rock and disturbed three good sized bass. In my surprised fumbling with the gun I scared them off and shot my spear into a rock.:waterwork
Coming back through an area of weed and rock I was thinking to myself "I can't believe there aren't fish in here" when a shoal of 3 and 4 pounders appeared. This time I WAS paying attention and got this one.
Neither of us saw another fish after. The wind had picked up and the swim back was into a small but "smacking" chop. A baptism of fire for Dirks first swim of 2012. I swam a lot of the way on my back without the snorkel.
I forgot to weigh the fish before filleting but I'd guess 4 pounds.
