Anyone around cork for a low water dive today?

pissed off with boat now... Every thing works fine till I turn on the fishfinder (Garmin 160C) and for some reason the vhf picks up a signal on ch16... Turn off ff and the vhf doesn't detect anything. Turn it back on and the vhf picks up a signal on ch16... When I go through the menu on ff the vhf starts clicking on ch16....

Have you accidentally crossed wires on the vhf dsc? as the 160 doesnt have gps, maybe its sending a duff signal instead?

No, I'm not using GPS the only wires im using on the ff is power, the nmea output wires are taped up. likewise the only wires going into the vhf is the antenna and power.

I have the same problem on my handheld vhf... hold it close to the ff and it detects a signal on ch 16... feckin annoying!!!

Ah with you now. Alu foil around the ff... I had a similar problem with the wiper motor at one time

I've been having a stressful few months and decided today to feck it and go diving...

Long story short... was in for 4-5hours in my 10mm gear. Water temp 12 in the shallows and 10' in depth.
Explored a fair bit today on some known spots, found a nice pollock spot and picked up a few small pollocks, hoping the biggies will be in soon. Few lobster to boot. How bad...
Home to find the wife about to ring the guards cos id been gone so long!

based on the photo's over the last few days I had to try some pollock thai fishcakes... but mine look waaaaaaaaaaaaay more rustic than yours.... and rose all the way

Hi All

I have been doing a bit of free-diving lately, I'm fairly new to the sport although I did Basic Free-diving course with Feargus Callagy (he recommend me that forum) and I'm going to do Level 1 Apnea Academy Freedive Course in June. I feel very comfortable in the water and I want to improve my free-diving skills. (static: over 3min). My objective is start some spear-fishing. I live in Galway and I'm pretty keen to meet up with some other peole around the area who head out spear-fishing, or even free diving. Im finding it a bit sketchy going out by my self all the time so i was hoping to find some dive buddies. If anyone reading this is local to the are and would like to head out some time that would be great.

Hi Ryszard... im based about half hr north of galway and your welcome to tag along anytime with us... all goin to plan were heading out friday evening over past blackhead and planning to camp the night to catch the early tide too... your welcome to come if you like.... if you dont fancy camping you can meet us either time....pm me your number if your interested...

What sort of depth do you find the Lobster at? I always take a look around but never seem to find any.. well one last year but thats it.

I was standing on one a few weeks ago and rob spotted it. Water was knee deep. I've only really started spotting them over the last year. Hard enough to spot. If I'm spearfishing I never spot them unless I put the gun down and dedicate time to them. Personally I have to be looking solely for lobster to get them.

Like Jonnybouy says, you have to look for either lobsters or fish, not both. Over here in Cornwall, I find a low tide is best, and you have to get low down and amongst the reef you are searching. I find it helps if I think like a lobster, and look at the ground through their eyes. "If I was a tasty lobster, where would I go?" Normally its under a ledge hidden by kelp, into an awkward looking crack in the rock, or in a hole at the back of an overhang. Somewhere dark and snug, so a small torch helps. Total persistance pays off. Once you find one, then the fun starts trying to get the thing out. It helps to practice your "Hero Grab" beforehand, and never put two lobsters in the same bag together (unless you have banded thier claws first).

Good post - it amazes me just how many people seem to simply come across a lobster! I dont think I have ever just found a lobster, I find them by searching as described by Trelawney.

Ya same with me. If the fish are nowhere to be found and I decide to look for crab or lobster that's when I get them. Never seen a lobster out of a hole.
