, There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

This is the main driver for setting up an association, as Johnny said earlier there has been some bad PR lately, if we just stay quiet and do nothing we could be looking at a knee-jerk reaction of an all out ban which none of us want to see.
An Irish Spearfishing Association would be specifically for spearfishing, we would not seek to regulate but to adhere to the regulations that are already in place for sea anglers. Through education and a dedicated website we will try to promote our sport as responsible and sustainable.
The fisheries officer was very positive towards us and was unaware of the numbers and newcomers to the sport.
We are going to launch the spearfishingireland.ie website soon. I am the one who design and develop the website for our association. If anyone is interesting of helping us we will need to put together some content for it.
We need the content for sections:
1. Equipment
2. Freediving
3. Regulations
4. Short and long welcome message for the front page and the landing page
5. About us section
6. Conservation and Environment
7. FAQ - this is very useful section. It should contain the most popular questions and answers.
for example:
Q?: Do I need a licence for my speargun
A : Yes, you do as the Irish law .....
Q?: What equipment do I need to start spearfishing
A: You will need: wetsuit 5mm, mask etc .............
Those faq's saves lot of haste as there is lot of beginners and we don't need to answer all those questions over and over again

My two cents for what its worth.
When Pedro first contacted me regarding this matter I was a bit dubious, I have and continue to be a member of some various clubs, assocations and societies. From fly fishing to astro soccer the one thing I have always found is as soon as you appoint chairpersons secretaries etc the politicking starts.
There is a great bunch of people on here some of whom I have had the pleasure of meeting at various times and get togethers and I hope to meet many more. Hopefully the implementation of this body wont create a political atmosphere.
I wholeheartedly welcome the involvement with the fisheries board as we do need clarity in regard to being confronted by the odd angry angler etc as well as needing to separate ourselves from some feckin idiots sorry thats the nicest way I can put that still annoyed about that idiot I met the other wknd.
So you can count me in, I'm afraid our largest problem will be trying to combat the negative P.R generated by people who will never join but can still post vids on you tube etc entitled " spearfishing Ireland ".
NOW; The part I really dont like, Vasile I understand you have convinced your local Gardai to issue you a firearms licence for your speargun. Therefore you must keep it in a gun safe, which must be inspected by a Garda. Also you will be limited as to the number of guns you can own. As a former gun owner I know gun safes are not cheap approx 200 euro and must be secured to a wall of a certain thickness. I live in a rented apartment and know for sure that even if I had a suitable wall which I dont my landlord would not allow me to screw a gun safe to it.
Does this also mean that everyone else is breaking the law ??
What implications does this have for importing guns which we all do??
Should Feargus only sell guns to licence holders??
I have asked various Gardai about spearguns and have never been advised to acquire a licence. If someone is starting out in the sport an extra 280 euro is a big ask especially in the current climate. Interested to hear other peoples views ?

I prefer to build new forum for Ireland under forums.spearfishingireland.ie as it will allow us to have private sections only for advance members where we can share spots etc. But any suggestions are welcome
Rafal you have it wrong. The banded spearguns we use do not need a licence. Not classed as firearms according to the firearms officers in Phoenix park. U only need a licence for gas powered. We can't get it in writing but were assured that this is the situation. So don't worry Neal. Vasile was informed by gardai to get a monitored house alarm and gun safe when he actually didn't need it. I'm sure vasile will explain more.....

What’s the different between using this forum and the same one on spearfishing Ireland? If you guys want we can stay on this forum I don't mind - It will save my lot of work.

I'm pleased to hear you (like everyone here on DB) want to do these things for the love of the sport.
What i'd like to suggest is this - rather than setting up a separate forum on your site why don't you link to this DeeperBlue.com forum and take advantage of our large and mature audience?
Rather than competing against each other why don't we work together?
First of all - setting up new forum is only a suggestion however I think there is some advantage of having that under irish domain as separate forum.
1. Easy to find in google for New irish spearos
2. Helps promote irish domain name in google as frequent changes appearing on OUR irish website.
3. We can customize and develop it the way we want to
For my being here is like renting a flat - you pay rent every month to someone when you can build your own house and invest all you time to promote your own irish thing.
But that's only my opinion ....

sorry zaratustra but we all found this forum very very easy...ive met a lot of people on here and have learned so much from people here not just in ireland but from all over the world...there is yrs of experience from people on here...i for one will be staying here too...
ok, what about setting up a forum under spearfishingireland.ie just for the beginners or people who will find it as appears under irish domain name etc. Where we "more advanced" spearos can help them and advice but in the same time we can all remain here. It is nothing wrong with joining to different forums and helping others, is it? I am not forcing anyone to leave this site as why should I
dont see why you cant just link in this forum...reckon the most experienced spearos in ireland are all here... dont try and fix something that aint broke
Hi guys back to the spearguns issue,I approach some garda stations to find some clear information about owing and using a speargun.From all 3 garda stations I've got different answers.Most of the guards are convinced that we need a speargun license as for any other firearm.So I proceeded to obtain a firearm licence for a pneumatic speargun.I went to my local branch and fill the application form (fca1)and submitted to the firearm officer.I was advised to install a gun safe and have my house monitored(I had that already,I live in Blanchardstown :thankyou). I purchased a gun safe for 130 euros and installed in the house.I had the premises inspected and I'm still waiting for an answer from the guards for the last month.But this is for a pneumatic speargun,I repeat a PNEUMATIC speargun.I went this route to find out exactly what it take to obtain and own legally a speargun.In my search I got to the firearms officer in the head office in Phoenix Park and I ask what is the legislation regarding rubber band spearguns.From his expertise and advice he reassured me that the rubber band spearguns are not considered SPEARGUNS.
The only guns considered spearguns are CO2 powered and pneumatic powered
guns.But that doesn't mean you can walk in a nightclub with an offensive weapon and wave it to people.
So lads if you ever come across any individual who wants to enquire about your rubber band speargun you can provide the number for the firearm officer in the head office in Phoenix Park which is 01 6661916
