Sunfish- when you say your hunting is that with a dog or gun? thought about getting a gun myself but the cost of the safe and alarm installation put me off.
I used to do abit of lamping years back in the UK with my old dog, not to sure the misses would let me use the Beagle I have now though.

It's with a dog, ferrets and nets. I do some lamping too. I hunt with one of my sons and we advertise rabbit control. We only go where the rabbits really are a problem and it's surprising how often we get called to a place we've already been "unofficially".

Did abit of ferreting myself although the ferrets were owned by a buddy, do you sell the rabbits you get? was after some myself but the English market are charging 10euro a go and they were farmed.

Never thought of getting a ferret, might be something to look into.

Well lads,
great to see everyone so eager to get in the water, vis in connemara seems excellent from the surface but thats as close as i'll be getting until this weather starts to give us some heat.
Haven't posted on this since i joined last year but i've been following it and just wanted to say thanks for all the tips and advice ye share. done a lot of snorkelling last summer but still haven't bought a gun as i'm a broke student but if any of ye have any old second hand guns i'd be happy to give ye a few pound so i can get training!

On a change of note, it's nearly the end of March. Why have none of you lads had a bass yet? I've been hunting (nearly said dogging) all winter but it looks like I better get back in the water soon.:t

Lads, a heads up and advice. A guy I know had his catch and gear confiscated over the weekend for taking scallops. All were of the right size but he did have a big haul as he had a big family gathering that weekend. He challenged the baliifs and the guards attended but only to make sure there was no argy bargy. At all times he was polite etc and asked on what grounds the ctach was being taken etc. To all questions to this baliff and a superior of his the reply was thats our (the baliffs) interpretation of the law. the ground is not in a prescribed area. Thoughts/comments please.

Please think hard before you get a ferret, there are thousands of mistreated ones looking for a good home though!

Without giving too much away can u say what county it was in ? Well surely this is a time for the official spearo body to cut its teeth.

This is not the first time this has happened in this area. If it was a father and son baliff team then it's definitely the same crew. Did he demand to know under what legislation he was being charged? I certainly would have stood my ground too. Having said that it is still a slightly grey area that could do with clearing up for once and for all .

Sorry: they shouldn't have given up their gear without the bailiffs first providing in writing the law in which they had supposedly broken. I'm sure the Spearo body will represent them on this matter. Ill call around a few people tomorrow. These are exactly the grey areas that we need to highlight.

Did they issue any notices, receipts for the equipment that was seized and / or stipulate which laws were being broken?

I presume there was no scuba or artificial breathing gear involved, do you know Feargus if the guy involved is planning on challenging this through the courts? It's hard to comment on this without knowing all the facts and if he is the victim of over zealous bailiffs misinterpreting the law, and I think most of us would be wondering how much of a haul it was and how it would impact on the sustainability of scallops in the area....that's my thoughts.

I'm also wondering why the guards sided with the bailiffs if they were unaware of what the legality of the seizure was and why they didn't just take names and details until the legality was established. Sounds like the whole incident is a mess.

Sounds like the guards took the easy way out siding with the professionals. I sent u a pm derekn.
Ill make a few calls tomorrow and try and straighten a few things out. We all need to be singing off the same hymn sheet here. This is y we set up the Spearo body!!

Don't know if receipts were issued but the guy thinks the baliff will take it further. It was a large take, a lot more than most would be comfortable with but as I said to Johnny there's no catch limit legally afaik. Perhaps that's something we could call for. The guy had a large haul as it was his local area, hadn't been out in over 6 months and had a large family gathering he was trying to provide for. He ended up buying fish that evening.

I'd really like to see a bag limit introduced to be honest.

I think its a good idea, apparently scallops were plentiful and easily taken from the shore many years ago near where I live...there was no limit on what anyone could take, I've never seen a single scallop on this shore so I guess they were hunted to extinction here.

People have been to court in that area for similar !I'm no expert but I think if it went that far it will go further.If nothing else if we were represented at least we could get clarity for the future. Regarding the limit Johnny its probably a good idea but very hard to quantify.
