and why Karl Pernett had a running start to his second static...
He was with a very hard headache, and the masseur offer him a massage to relief it. They didn't hear when the competition started again, when He returns the time was running and only had 2 minutes for the breathup. He bail out early due to the very short breath-up. He didn't want to exit with a Samba or BO

Aother legendary static freediver i missed and nobody seems to talk about that is Martin Stepanek.
So nr 1 and nr 2 in the world where not there !!!

Still a very nice event. Complements to all competitors to enduring this loud circus while staying concentrated. I remember from the competition in Paris how difficult that was while Pierre was screeming his lungs out during the static and dynamic ;-)

I belive that Martin was invited but he said he couldn't, or something like this... but he was invited

yes! tom sietas, herbert nitsch, martin stepanek, bevan dewar and many more where not there... but the iwc-contest was not the world championship and the winner is not the world champion. the world championship is next month in renens-lausanne and we`ll see who is the best static men in the world, who is the worldchampion 2005!

Wolle,

I wonder why it was then stated that "The 12 best static freedivers of the world" would attend. Without doubt, there were the best freedivers of the world attending, but not all of them. This is, though, what was claimed. If some of the world's best, including the WR-holder, do not compete - for whatever reason - this simply is not the case. No matter if there will be a world championship later this year or not.

Well - it seems that the issue seems to be that Martin and Tom were not there.

As far as I understand it it was an invite only event (it was never claimed to be a World Championship). Martin seems to have been invited but was too busy to attend and Tom was not invited due to complications around the anti-doping test earlier in the year.

You still had 12 athletes from around the world competition in a structured and media friendly event.

Why not appreciate the event for what it was, along with the benefits of helping to promote the sport and an attempt to make static (not reknowned for being very "exciting") interesting.

stephan you are right ... the event was well organised and the media coverage was great. so "freediving" was the real winner!
and i think this is the most important thing.
it was an event for medias and for visitors! the idea is great.

I agree with Christian !! I think that must be most of this kind of competitions, of course there will not be WR, for sure, but if they could make a good show with static, when someone organize an event like this with dinamics will be great ! May be not with the best in the world, but this kind of competitions will make the people know about freediving, and the sponsors will be there to put their money to organize better competitions, proffesional freedivers, etc. Then if someone wants to break a WR can do it in a Worlds, or other event.

A funny linguistic remark ; I was in Nice on Saturday... I took the train and arrived in Monaco at 6 PM... I went to the tourism office to ask for the progamme... this event was mentioned in French and in English...

in the French version : " ... THE 12 best freedivers in the world... "

in the English version : "... 12 AMONG the 12 best freedivers in the world :girlie ... "

This event was very "political"...

Where was Tom SIETAS ? :ban ....

thanks jome for your interesting link... I was in Monaco too and could appreciate the show...

Congratulations for Timmo...

He definitly gets the cowd going! Wow... Must better then the normal standard, very boring to watch, static competitions...
