It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
is there a restriction on how many you can shoot? do you have to have a licence to hunt?

There is a Daily Limit of 5 geese and 8 ducks, with a total possesion and transportation limit of 10 geese and 16 ducks. You require a licence to hunt In Canada. These pictures were taken a few days ago in Vanderhoof, British Columba. This is the North American Goose capital. we had easily 8000 birds overhead in under two hours (not a typo). only reason we didn;t have our limit in 5 minutes was due to the flight hight of the birds. It's a pretty unique place. Come to Canada one day, I'll cook you some Goose and you'll never leave

Oh yes! Hunting is quite regulated in the U.S. at the insistance of the hunters! You'd have to read the history of the National Forest Service and of the Fish and Wildlife Service to really understand the process but in a nutshell, wild game belongs to the citizens as a whole. That means no commercial usage. Professional biologists monitor populations and determine how much harvest the species can stand. Many species are much more common now than they were when the European settlers first arrived; in some cases to the point of being a complete pest. The whole idea is to make sure that there will always be enough game to provide hunting forever. It works, too.

Thanks Oldsarge, you said it much better then I could. one prime example of a pest is the canadain goose. due to the dramatic increase in habitat & food source (farm land) coupled with a decline in goose hunters over the years and the population is getting a tad out of control. They are excellent table fare and have eyesight simmilar to that of a raptor. they also see colour. makes for a warry animal and an exciting hunt.

Diced goose with onions in a white wine sauce with some saute mushrooms... Mmmmmm..... going to have to defrost some more for tomorrow.....

hmm to bad the snow is flying, we have huckle & Blue berrys growing just out side of town. I can usually get a couple buckets full in an afternoon. makes great pie. this is what my berry picking area looked like this morning.... (went for a drive)

After I took that picture I turned around and noticed some interesting tracks...

Seems some of the Bears are still up and about. should be all denned up by now. this was a little guy, guessing around 5 to 5.5 ft long (nost to tail) by size of track.

Oh and Bear is EXCELLENT

whoah!!! look at all that snow!!!! fantastic! i haven't seen snow for about 7 years!

are those your pictures? hey the bear tracks are kinda scary. are those your pictures?

yup - took them this morning. Bears are grossly overrated in the "Scary" department. we have them around here like Austrailia has Roos, not uncommon to see 10 - 15 in an afternoon drive on a logging road.

As with all game animals, the flavor of bear varies with its diet. A garbage dump glutton is completely inedible and salmon-fed brownies have a terrible reputation. On the other hand, when a blackie has been gorging on blueberries and crowberries, it resembles prime rib with just a barest hint of tuna. It's rather like that particularly savory tuna sauce that the Northern Italians make to put over braised beef. Deeee-licious! Even done the easy way, braised or potroasted with lots of garlic, it is a definite treat. In the pioneer days, they used to refer to venison as "bread". Only bear qualified as "meat".

Oldsarge you're making me hungry... and I have to save some of my meat for the winter... if I eat anymore steak and drink anymore beer this week I'm going to explode.....

and again, you're 100% right, get a berry bear and you'll never want for beef again. close tie for my favorite red meat : Elk & Bear. but still prefer a nice seared red tuna steak with balsamic reduction on greens over both... (I know, blasphamy!)

Then I'll simply have to drag you off to Africa some day and introduce you to eland broiled over a mohpane wood fire under the Southern Cross. With a glass of good South African red you will exclaim, "Take me now, God, it can't get any better than this!" Nyala is awfully close, but eland is the best meat that walks. Closer to home, you'll have to get North for muskox. I had that in the Sportsman Lodge in Yellowknife with baby boiled potatoes and covered in a red wine gravy. Augh!

What are you doing in July of '06 or August '08?

For that matter, Sands, what are you doing those times?

ok - have a slab of venison sirloin defrosting for tomorrow's dinner.... I'm an addict and I need help.... :head
