Love my new Omer Alien mask...but how do I turn off the auto-fog feature?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Nope. I just rinsed the mask with water while gently pulling on the skirt to get any residue out. Worked incredibly well. Although it doesn't have a serious fogging issue, I'm going to give my Atomic Scuba mask the same treatment.

I followed Spaghettis advice on my masks and it has worked well.

First of all, use a lighter on both sides of the lens to burn the silicone. Then smear the toothpaste all around the lenses and let it be like that for the whole night (or at least for several hours). And finally rinse the mask thoroughly and make sure all the toothpaste is gone.
The spit-ritual before the actual dive is still needed though.

Works for me. But it is also said that the Alien is one of the foggiest masks ever.

I used the flame too and it works fine but if it cold water is your dive I have found its just an easy thing to park a little water in the mask and slosh it around until your face cools off.
then again I always carry a little water in my mask just a habit I guess.

BTW no water in the mask at the pool just don't like chlorine in the eye :)

Just got my Omer Alien so will try the SoftScrub (I have some around the house). Just an FYI: swimmers (the regular kind) are always dealing with fogging of goggles and use both techniques: (1) spitting, and (2) keeping a bit of water in the mask and letting it slosh over the lens while swimming. The water never touches the eyes, so no worries about chlorine.

Also, one correction from above: condensation forms on the WARM side, not the cold. Take a bottle of liquid from the frig and put in on the counter in a warm room and watch what happens ;-)

One note on the whole spitting thing:
Spit and rinse. But do not let the lenses dry out again before you put on the mask because they will fog up.
I spit and rinse, but keep a pool of water in my mask until just before i put it on. Tip it out and stick it on, and it will not fog up.

warm face cold water whats the mistake??

I swim freestlye so when I practice for open water I roll all the way to my back for air
some times the lakes aren't to friendly about letting you just grab some air. :)

Thought someone said that up in the thread. If not, my mistake.

QUESTION: Just came back from pool workout. I've been scrubbing my Omer glass (inside) with Soft Scrub. And it's definitely better than it was when new. However, it's still fogging some. It seems like I've got a center spot on each lens that stays clear, and the edges are fogging. I notice that when I rinse out the mask, water stays on those center spots. SO... should I just keep scrubbing with Soft Scrub and hit the edges more? Is there any downside to doing that? Am I going to hurt the lenses and ruin the mask somehow by over-doing it?

Thanks for feedback.

Just make sure you use an abrasive where the abrasive material is much softer than glass, but tougher than silicon rubber (not hard).
Don't use sand for instance.

The other thing to note is that:
Cola in a dirty glass, it foams more than in a clean one. The tiny scratches and imperfections allow the bubbles to form.
The same goes for condensation on the lenses if you can polish the glass then you should get less fog.

On ebay you can get diamond pastes in grits up to 30000 with that you should be able to get a brilliant polish in the glass...

Sea Gold doesn't work on yours? Strange, it works just lovely on mine.

Paintballer's just use plain old liquid dishwashing soap. Rub a very thin film of it on & wipe it off good with a soft, clean, dry rag. It works REALLY well. Trying to keepa paintball mask from fogging up on a humid day while you're playing war was always a pain...Until
I learned about the dishsoap trick! Don't see why it would'nt work!

Always used SeaGold on my diving mask's though. But 5 bucks seems to be alot to pay for such a small amount of stuff? No wonder they call it Sea GOLD! roflI'll be trying the dishsoap thing on my dive mask this spring!

Good
luck!:)

It's a small amount of stuff, but you also use so little at a time it could last a single diver 1000 dives! I've seen a lot of people over use defog. Some people have mixed up their own defog using dish soap I believe. Some commercial solutions smell like dish soap.

The PB defogs I've seen are like sea drops, a plastic safe liquid.

How does the Alien compare to the Aries 39?
The Aries looks like it has a slightly better field of view, especially downwards, but that may be the picture. No stores near me stock Omer so I cannot compare myself unfortunately.

I wish someone would make a mask that looks UP, not down. I dont need to look at scuba instruments at my weight belt, I want to look forward without straining my neck! It baffles me that all these spearo-specific companies don't design one. Laying in aspetto, or swimming horizontally midwater with my neck cranked back against a 7mm suit gets to be a pain, also on the dive straight down.

quick report: just received and tried some Sea Gold (anti-fog gel) on my Omer Alien in pool, and WOW! New mask (after scrubbing) was fogging quickly, but with a tiny bit of Sea Gold in each lens (and rinse out), I had ZERO fogging in 3/4 hour of solid use. It works! I'll not use any more and see how long its effects last. (FYI: I have no connection to the product)

Sea Gold does work wonders. I've been using it for years and years and it hasn't failed me just yet.

Sea Gold and Sea Drops both work great. One SMALL drop on the lens ab smear it around is all you need. A small bottle will last a long long time.

Probably one of the best posts i have seen, this is surely a major issue to be taken up with the "BIG" companies as to why with all the years experience and advice from pro spearos no one has tackled this problem, i also suffer from a pain in the neck(and not the misses) Erik open a thread for this please.

It may need more than one dose of the toothpaste to get it fog free. Try an advanced search on toothpaste by user spaghetti for a full description on the procedure involving both toothpaste and a flame :)
I had a similar problem with my Sporasub - not expecting it as spit had always worked fine on previous masks. I search this thread belatedly, and decided to follow Spaghetti's instuctions. Worked fine even thought I had already used it, though S says ideally before first use. If anyone is apprehensive about applying flame to the lens, don't be; just raise the flame to the centre of the glass and you can see the silicon burn off in a second - no scorch marks or other problems! Works fine now...
