Muscle mass

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I have never had a problem eating (unfortunately that works against me, as I prefer to be light - doh!) - but eating when you are not hungry sounds grim. There is also a potential problem that they sometimes call "ex-Marine syndrome", or similar, in the States where you aquire a large appetite when young and very active but find that the appetite does not diminish when you get older & less active.

There is hope though, I have a friend who is in his mid-50's who is buff. Stallone (59) is supposed to be back in shape for Rocky VI too:

[Looks like the image was "retouched" though - see right waistband]

he was juicing in that movie.

just noticed that thread. Thank yuo

I quit bodybuilding some time ago coz of as far as i know its not good for diving. Now i am doing only anaerobic weightlifting. Works good for decreasing surface time and increase pain threshould against CO2

Basically,

Hold you breath just like static ( start with 20 sec and go way up to 1 min)
When predefined duration achived (20 secs in the begining phase of training)
start to perform the exercise. But drop the weight to the %30-%40 percent of your max. for that specific exercise. Perform the action more quickly.Between the sets perform little breathing up routing like 5 sec inhale 10 sec exhale. Then hold your breath again for another 20 secs and start lifting. When you feel more comfortable. You can increase the static time rep number (by the way keep the rep. number high from the begining, could be 10-12-15 or 15-20-25 or 20-30-40) etc...

An if you are as crazy as me go to field and run for 3 km:)

And remmember to take good protein quality carb. No fat, sugar, salt (when you are not in sea of course:t),and caffein.

Well you will be both look great and able to dive :) Doesn't this sound COOOL!!!!!??

i dont think bodybuilding hurts unless you start getting bulky with muscles. You are just becoming stronger pound for pound. I guess maybe because i workout for strength instead of mass.

What really helped me with my dive times for spearfishing is just jumping into a pool and swimming back and forth as many times as i could with fins with a realistic speed pace. Now, the only problem with working out like this is, you need someone to watch you so you dont drown in the pool. The results are great though. You will see after a few weeks you will be able to increase the times you go back and forth.

Hey fellas, its good to be in the company of former and current bodybuilders/powerlifters.

My stats:-
Age:23
Height: 5ft 8inches
Current weight: 100kg, 220pounds
B/f%: 12%

Will be competiting in the INBA (International Natural Bodybuilding Association) at the end of the year.

Hi, this is my first thread (and writing) and just few minutes ago I made PB 5:45:martial(day after brutal leg workout). It has been a week since I started to train static apnea more seriously. My old record 5:15 is about 10 years old, I achieved it hyperventilating ( until muscles started to spasm). Then I was in top physical shape (professional cycling), but without apnea training. My bodyweight was 73kg, height 178cm, but now I weigh 97kg, mostly from muscles(weightlifting) and I really wonder, how much and what kind of an effect has that kind of muscle mass on breath holding. (I come from Slovenia, so sorry about my english).
At the same time I would like to thank to all the participants on this great forum for all invaluable informations you have given.:)
More muscle mass actually works against you in breath holding. Muscles consume oxygen even at rest, so the more muscle you carry, the faster your oxygen depletes during a breath hold. At 97kg you're carrying significantly more mass than your cycling days at 73kg, which means higher oxygen demand even while completely still.

That said, your 5:45 is solid progress. Breath holding is mostly CO2 tolerance and relaxation — both trainable regardless of body composition. If you're curious how your current muscle mass compares to your frame, tools like an FFMI calculator can give you a rough idea of where you stand muscularly.

Ok
A man of many talents Foxfish! I used to train a lot for climbing and it got me into other activities (weights -esp. pull-up related, circuit training, swimming, running, cycling,..), mainly as ways to keep fit & keep my weight down. I am also interested in nutrition & health in general. I too found reducing fat (eliminating it as far as practical) & increasing protein & fibre intake beneficial, and actually did achieve a fairly "cut" physique a couple of times and for a few years -- by accident more than design (I was extremely active at the time while also watching my eating & drinking -- part of keeping my weight down). I like eating, so didn't really need protein powders (although I tried a couple) and I think they now recommend that you don't use them for weightloss. The exercise & activity seem to be by far the most important factor though. [If you are one of those people who have trouble gaining weight, getting up in the night & eating an extra high protein meal/snack is supposed to be effective].

However, I am a bit wary of excessive protein these days, as it is associated with gout, kidney problems and excessive bone loss in older people (perhaps the reason why countries that eat a lot of dairy food suffer more osteoporosis, despite the high calcium content of dairy). A few years ago Weider started selling strips intended to help you determine if you had eaten enough/too much protein, I think they detected some by-product of protein breakdown (keytones?) in the urine. Some oils are vitally important too, omega 3 & 6 fatty acids -- fish oil, nuts!
Looking back at my 2007 post on this old thread, I was struck by how different my view on nutrition is now!

The recent inversion of their food pyramid in America ( by Robert Kennedy Jr.) reflects some (but not all) of my changed views. The main difference being summarized as: "carbs bad, fat good".

Although I now believe popular seed oils are bad. So by fat, above, I mean things like: animal fats (tallow, lard , fish oil) & extra virgin olive oil.

Also the concepts of: metabolic syndrome & autophagy (the latter being the subject of a 2016 Nobel Prize !) have become important to me, especially as an aging type 2 diabetic . :(
