My new Sphera mask

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I've noticed lately that my Sphera is leaking, as well, but mine isn't even that old; I got it in June! It's probably just the shape of my face, I always have a heck of a time finding masks that fit right. I was having so many problems with my Sphera leaking during my PF course that even Paul and Kirk inspected it to make sure the lenses were ok. It seals to my face perfectly (even with a slight vacuum holding) as long as my mouth is closed, but as soon as there's a snorkel in my mouth, changing the shape of my face, the vacumm releases and...glug glug glug. I can't even have more than a day's worth of facial hair, since mine is SO stiff that I suspect it pushes the skirt away from my upper lip enough to allow leakage; kinda like trying to get the mask to seal on sandpaper. I've been shopping around for another new mask, but I'm not sure what to look into.

Todd,

When my Sphera was leaking, I used a friend's Cressi Minima for a while. The Minima was fine - its definitely a smaller mask than the Sphera, although the nose pocket is larger  Only thing is the field of vision is much smaller and the mask doesn't compress like the Sphera.

I do really like the Sphera, though, with it's flexibility, light weight, and curved lenses. The leaking issue seems to come and go, which is odd; some days, I guess I just manage to get it to sit JUST RIGHT on my face! Hmm....has anyone tried the Dacor Bandit? That one looks promising, too. I just wish it came in black/black, as I'm not wild about transparent skirts and colored frames.

I, and many others on here, go through a Sphera about once a year- the lens gets so scratched up it's time to get a new one. I have almost a half dozen in my gear bag in varying degrees of disintegration. It's still my favorite mask and hat's why I still get a new one every year.

I've owned a Falco and liked how it fit, but the volume is larger than the Sphera and once it broke I never replaced it.

I had a Minima and hated it for it's super narrow field of view. I felt way too claustrophobic with it on.

I've tried on the Bandit, but it had such a wide skirt that it wouldn't fit me properly.

I love my OMER Alien and use it for spearfishing and SCUBA diving, but still like the Sphera better for underwater hockey and diving with my monofin- going so fast with the fin on my Alien sometimes leaks.

I plan on picking up one of these Marina's as soon as can find a reliable source. I checked out the ebay like an it didn't show that it could be shipped to the US- everywhere else though!?

Thanks for the link. It looks like I may end up ordering it from there.

I, finally, got an answer back from Aqualung on availability of this, or should I say the "lack" of availability.:rcard

It is sold in the European market only and not for distribution in the US. They said I might be able to get my hands on one if I was going to DEMA this year, which I am not, so it looks like I need to order it from Bulgaria.

Has anyone on here ever ordered from this shop before?

Thanks,

Jon, I think Jimdoe is going to Dema this year - maybe he could snag one for you.

My father-in-law is going and said he would try and get one- if he remembers it. ;)

I tried buying one off of that site and they don't take credit cards or paypal, just check or money orders, so I think I'll pass on them for now and stick with my Sphera.

Isn't it FRUSTRATING how HARD it is to get certain freediving gear in the US? GRRR!! Just TRY finding a good freediving wetsuit...or a monofin!

thanks again....and fourfeetdown you can obtain for me a paradisia nose clip, i want buy 3, but i don't know where. Im really interested. cheers

I bought a marina technisub this week, (simply becuase its the only one that suits my face) Have any of you managed to find a marina and dive with it. And what is your general feel about it?

I bought mine, from South Africa!, since no one in the States seems to be able to get them until later on this summer.:head

I love it and use it all the time. It has taken over for my OMER Alien when spearfishing, and it might even replace my Sphera for deeper stuff.

Besides the fact that it's low volume and has glass lenses, so it doesn't scratch up like my Sperha, it also hardly ever fogs- unlike my OMERS which seem to fog no matter how many times I clean them.:rcard Someone else posted that it depends upon the release agents used in the mold during manufacture as far as fogging goes, but whatever it is Technisub has it figured out and OMER has along way to go.

Elios, of course;), 5mm smoothskin/nylon reversible. I wear it nylon in during the summer and skin in during the winter. It's not quite as warm as opencell, but I didn't feel like pulling out my winter suit that day- which is a 6mm opencell/smoothskin. Next suit I buy will be a standard 5mm opencell/nylon for durability and warmth. I may even go with a camo pattern just to look cool for the fish.:)

I've been thinking of trying a 5 mil open in/ sharkskin out with the benthos camo when I finally replace my nylon out open in one - probably not for a year or so. this 6 mil smooth is so stretchy I'm not as nervous about blowing it out. I think a 3 would be at risk though.
