It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

well luckily, as i said before, i have been rod/reel fishing almost all my life.. so ive gained a great respect for the sport of fishing in general. i too am a firm believer in only catch to eat, and i realize in this sport that "catch and release" is not an option, thus i will only be shooting to kill and eat the fish.. hence the halibut AV i found haha. i would only be shooting regulation-sized fish, also. likely corbina, halibut, bass, etc.

and yeah i wouldnt hunt crystal cove in that case, much too risky and im sure the fines would be hefty.. besides, why risk it when you can just go a few minutes south to laguna and probably find similar conditions?

by the way, how old is everyone? just wondering. sometimes its hard to tell online. im 22.

mid 30's but still young at heart

yeah your user text implies that haha..

i have family back on oahu.. not blood family, but through relationship/kids.. i love it out there. would definitely love spearing out there after gaining some experience here in california.. im sure it would be a lovely change up.. the surf was definitely a nice change up lol.

these posts have come up pritty fast. umm i plan on goin out this friday if conditions permit i found a good beach off of victoria nice sand reef that merges with a rock reef. should be good never been there but my parents went one day and said it would be perfect for spearing. i have been using a polespear fot the past 3 years and have just upgraded to a gun small but does the job. if you are interested give me a shout by the way im 18

yeah im used to a faster-paced message board so maybe thats why i post alot lol.. and i guess more activity from a few members turns into more activity all around.

your plan sounds like alot of fun im not sure where victoria is off the top of my head.. but the environment sounds cool. hopefully ill have my stuff by then and can come check it out or something

Victoria is good to the right of the stairs and when the swell is down. It dies get a little surgy though. However, if you head all the way to the left (Condos with glass partitions), it gets real reefy there and the surge is minimal because of the lack of sand. Again, as long as the swell stays down, and the viz is good, you can always run into something worth interest. I heard the viz is great right now....especially North near Malibu area. This weekend is ON FOR SURE.

yea like i said keep posting and ill keep you guys updated on where im gonna go. mostlikly it will be right there next to victoria. just wanted to try a new spot. but who knows it might be somewhere wild. i have wanted to plan a trip to catalina over summer if anyone is interested

matesz - i would definitely be interested in catalina after i get at least 5-10 sessions in before then, so i feel more comfortable and find my technique.

kanakafari - if you do hit victoria or go all the way to the left (im thinking thats where i was yesterday if you see the other thread).. which day would you be going? i should have my stuff today or tomorrow so i might go down there either tomorrow or friday.

i appologize for this but it turns out that i have work both fri and saterday. i need the money so i cant turn it down. possibly some tiem next week will work for me. let me know what you guys are going to be doing. as of right now i will have fridays off from work/school so i can go on fri sat or sun. what ever works. once again i appologize and i hope we can go out some other time.

I will be going out in palos verde this saturday at about 6am and sunday at cresent bay in Laguna and heading out to deadman reef. If the Vis holds and and swell stays down it sound be GREAT. today the report said Malibu is 20ft+ vis and 0 swell and laguna is like 10-15ft vis

any takers let me know

joel

i might be around on sunday to go out, depending on what time youre going out. im not too familiar with cresent bay, but ive heard of it.. and i havent heard of deadman reef so im not too sure where that is.. if you could further educate me on the whereabouts, ill definitely make an effort to come out!

dont worry about it dude, we all gotta do what we gotta do sometimes and its work before play. there will be plenty of opportunities to make it out. who knows, maybe sometime next week.

i, personally, am off school and work for 3 weeks straight. so provided my stuff gets here tomorrow, ill be out quite a bit while i can.

Cresent Bay is just south of Cyrstal cove by about 1/4 mile. The reef in question is a swim done from a small sandy beach. Its a good swim but can be worth it. It is a couple hundred yards off a rock formation named "seal rock" named for the seal collony that likes to hang out there.

Will probably be down there about 7am or so depending on the tide.

sounds like alot of fun. are you going alone so far or with a few buddies? just curious. i would be interested if im not up too late the night before. is it better to dive early in the morning.. or do you personally just like to get up and out early?

by the way, i dont know what setup youre using, but ill just be using a polespear.

I usually dive solo but I do have a buddy I dive with around laguna. He will probably show for sunday. I get up early for several reasons, it is what I am use to and I also have a wife and 2 kids + 1 more on the way so I try to balance my time and keep my obsession in check. I usually take the whole family to the laguna area though. A pole spear is perfect for the sandy beach at cresent bay, up in the surf area and on both sides of the cove you will find plenty of large corbina and it has also provided my freind and I nice Halibut.

thats great news! thanks joel, my spear and equipment is scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning, so i am considering going out tomorrow.. even if the conditions are only decent.. just to get out there.

would you have any tips on what depths to find these fish? i will plan on checking out cresent bay most likely.

NIce! nothing like new gear showing up at your door!

This conditions should be great it nothing changes (we can hope anyways)
but you can check local conditions at Laguna Sea Sports They post a dive report every morning from Shaws cove which is the next cove over from Cresent Bay. The Corbina and Perch "should" be very close to shore in from 3-6 feet of water. The larger Corbina "should" be at the south side of the cove at the very end. The entire beach is sandy bottom so the Halibut can be anywhere. There is reef on either side for the cove with some nice views.

If there is ANY swell be careful when you are up near the shore, Cresent Bay has some of the best shore break around and is one of my favorite places to bodyboard. Even getting caught off guard by as small one can toss you on your head.

Hope this helps! enjoy and be safe

Joel

PS what kind of Pole SPear did you pick up? I have a JBL travel spear and I just picked up a GAT-KU 8' pole spear that I have yet to use.

you game for this weekend aesthetics? You have a car right? If you wanna meet up somewhere and drive with us that is OK. Remember...the early bird catches the worm.....but this bird don't wait around for nothin'. Just let me know before Friday.
