North Devon Spearfishing

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I was hoping to get a new Eliossub wetsuit this year but have been put off by the much higher euro prices now (overly strong Euro due to strength of German economy lifting it up). By contrast the US Oceanos wetsuits look like much better value - and no extra cost for custom fit! However, on the mainland Britain, I wonder what VAT/random import duty HM Customs might add??

I'm getting bored waiting for the euro-zone to sort itself out though (bring back the Deutschmark!).

Mr.X,
Speak to Tribs as he has bought one recently and seems quite happy.
I thinkl he is now an expert on international finance, import, export, money markets. In short, quite a banker.

Mr x Diveskin (Oceanos) are based in Greece but use $ pricing!
My lastest one cost less than £140 delivered to my house & that was a MTM camo design with black legs & arms.

Have you recieved you suit yet Foxfish? mine was dispatched on the 26th of August, I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. Also waiting for a trigger from Josh at Neptonics and some bands from Florida.!

Scally, no it has not!
Mine was posted on the 25th but it will arrive via the UK & then on to Guernsey, so we might get ours on the same day! OOooo how exciting LOL..

I'm a little anxious though. Was it 16 measurements? I'm bound to have got at least one wrong. Just depends on by how much!

Take all the measurements several times, both sides of the body, hot & cold conditions. Discard any wacky ones & average out any differences. Leave a bit of extra space around the throat to avoid triggering swallow reflex.

Time invested in preparation is usually a good investment (compared to time spent sorting out mistakes later) -- and that's a life lesson you keep learning

I didn't realise. That's good news as, presumably, the price incs. VAT & there is no import duty within the EU. The price looks quite a lot less than I was quoted by Elios (their price has practically doubled over the last 6 years...the real inflation rate) - pity, I've been really pleased with my Elios suit.

Isaac, My 2 cents worth: I reckon it is worth getting specialist spearfishing gear but you don't need the most expensive stuff. If you shop around, you can usually get a good deal on things.

For example spearfishing fins often cost £80-£120 but Beuchat make some that are usually sold around £40-65. Somebody sells some good looking Italian Seacsub spearo fins on eBay (I think it is Anthony at Venture Sports in Paignton, but I could be wrong) for around £25-£28 -- perfect for the beginner spearo I would think (maybe you could drop in there or call them?) - might get some myself (my Seacsub mask & snorkel are excellent). APnea.co.uk used to have a black Omer spearo mask for £18 & the Beuchat Tubair flexible spearo snorkel for about £9. Mikes (of Bristol) sell good wetsuit booties at reasonable prices on ebay (£5 or £6 I think last time I looked). A Rob Allen rubber marseille-style weight belt, if you can get one for around £15-£18 would be a good buy. I've seen new spearo knives on ebay for £7-£9 - but I think ebay have since banned knife sales :duh. Fish stringer - cheap but good Omer monofilament stringer from Apnea.co.uk - or the mega-robust RA stringer for 2 or 3x the price elsewhere. Cheap torpedo dive floats work well. Getting a decent float line can be tricky but need not be expensive (I eventually found some v. good English made washing line for £1 - similar but thinner & lighter RA's excellent & inexpensive Thai curry green polypropylene line). Scubaland.fr had a reasonable price on spearo gloves (if you join their free club, although shipping can be prohibitive). I like the Beuchat gloves -- the old 3mm ones fit great, the new 2mm ones are tight but stretchy over 2 sizes (e.g. Small-medium, medium-large), like a second skin (less warm tho').

It's worth making a small investment up front, the gear lasts years (I had a mask, fins and snorkel that were still perfectly usuable after 30 years). so you might as well get something you like and that works well. Most of us started out with surf suits - but as Foxfish said, only good for 1.5 hours - and not so good for that even (I often dive for 2-4 hours in my spearo wetsuit, competitions are usually 6 hours). Regular dive masks have too large of a volume, they may not shield your eyes from the sun/fish. Regular snorkels often have fancy gadgets and hi-viz bits designed for surface viewing that can be a hindrance when diving for fish. You don't need a fancy knife, Spearo knifes can be small but benefit from a sharp point for dispatching fish (alternatively just use the spike of your stringer - which is essential equipment IMHO) - chisel-tipped SCUBA knives are not ideal. Rubber spearo weight belts tend to stay in place better than webbing SCUBA belts, especially when head-down diving to the sea bed.

Thanks for that mate, I ended up ordering a spiros suit which i heard is really good value, and should last. I have an omer mask and snorkel on the way, and seac x-pro fins. I took a bit of a risk and went for a Nemrod gun; I guess the only way i'll find out if its any good is through using it... My only concern is that it doesn't have anywhere to attach the float line, so may have to tie it around the trigger guard, and then have a separate line for the stringer. Also may need to figure out an alternative way of attaching spear to gun, as it appears to use a retaining ring, which i heard is not so good. Still keeping my eyes open for a weight system, been offered one with 6kg inc. for 70 quid... Gloves and socks i'm hoping to buy locally, and should hopefully make a decent enough knife shortly... Apologies for appalling punctuation and lack of caps, trying to rush this comment off :L many thanks, isaac

By the way, Pav, all dear mothers family was into SCUBA diving over in Jersey back in the day, turns out there may be a weight mold floating around being unused, I'll let you know if I hear any more.

A Nemrod gun? Is it new or second-hand? I thought they had gone under..??

Nah, brand new off ebay; Nemrod Classic 75... Theres a lot on there, but no one seems to review them or know of them...

Hi guys, got all my kit sorted; wetsuit finally arrived (Y) Took it all down to Croyde just to get the feel of it, but surf was so big couldn't get out past the breakers :head But anyone locally wants to go out sometime, or has any ideas on decent places, pm away!! In the meantime, I guess I'll get down to reading the books i brought out of retirement at exeter library :t

We've had some BIG swells buddy! Croyde about the worst place you could go in a heavy swell. I'll pm you! I have little hope for the end of the season and am back to surfing, but if we get a window will fin out with you somewhere calmer!

Haha it was my first time back in the water since all the schools started holidays, so it was a tad different from last time!! Luckily I didn't have too many expectations, and I was with a couple of surfers, so wasn't much of a waste of time. Guess it's jus a waiting game really..

Hey guys! Any advice on where to go on the north coast? I know vis may be down at the mo, but need somewhere to have a practice and a look about, maybe a few fish aswel!
Many thanks

Went out for the first time properly the other day, out to Ilfracombe. Vis was pretty poor, but had a fin round to Combe Martin. Didn't see any fish (didn't see the end of my gun!) but on the way back, I did manage to batter myself about on the rocks, tie myself up in my float line, and take several wrong turns into various coves :crutch ... Also, on coming ashore in Watermouth harbour, I managed to lose my knife on a dive, then cut my float line on a rock as I went looking for it, thus losing my gun. Hours later, I returned home, complete with gun and empty knife sheath

Happy days. Can't wait to get back out there!! :inlove

P.S, if anyone happens to be diving around Watermouth Harbour, and you impale yourself on a large Typhoon dive knife with the initials I.S carved into the hammer-pommel, let me know; there may be a finders reward

Hi guys, was wondering if any of you older forum members (experience, not age ) could tell me where to find a thread for Jersey (Channel island, not new)? Got a load of family over there, planning on heading over end of february, would be good to find out what to expect... If you could direct me to the right thread, would be much obliged...
