North Devon Spearfishing

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Ta very much, I'll have a look. Also, my grandad was a keen scuba diver back in the day, so I'm surehe could point out a few nice spots.
Cheers

So I'm free for four days and not expecting the vis on the North coast to clear up quickly. Is that why this thread seems to be a little dormant?

Would be nice to find a clearish spot somewhere in Devon/Cornwall, appreciate that secret spots and exact locations are a no no in the public domain, but would be most grateful if someone might give me a hint as to where I might be able to see past the end of my spear. ( maybe I should have just got a shorter gun ;)

Lol.. What we lose in viz on this stretch we gain in not having loads of wannabe tourists giving us a bad name. With the exception of 1 or 2 spots you can pretty much bank on spearing on your own with no hassles.

Just seek shelter! , and accept if you can see a meter past your gun then go in. You will have to hunt on the bottom where the viz is better and your only chance of fish coming into range. We do however all long the glassy flat days the summer promises which if it lasts 7 days can help improve the viz.

I can put 2 of us in a car to share petrol going south as soon as my foot is better! Currently I can not get it wet. :duh

Hi Pav,
I spear up your way on a regular basis when vis permits; I just don't advertise it as there are some very productive spots on its day. I'm planning on coming back up soon for a marathon hunt for a certain flatfish for the specci hunt. I usually hit the area most weekends for the surf and rod n line for bass and SE ray over low. I'll give you a shout when I'm up next and some vis.

Having looked at the weather I've written it off for the week, but will have to do some trips after work sometime.

Sorry to hear about the foot BTW.

Hi. Despite the bleak outlook tomorrow, I am keen to get out fishing. Its so messy, not sure where to chance?: North: Croyde etc, or South: Hope , Thurlestone, etc. Any advise would be appreciated. Anyone been out in N Devon?

Haven't been out yet this season, but if past experiences are anything to go by, North Devon will probably be like swimming in ink. But like I say, I haven't been out this year, so it's just conjecture... Good luck though, let us know how it goes!

Thurlestone is S. Devon. Can be good but not very sheltered, so takes a while to clear after heavy weather. East coast is more sheltered if you are making the effort to go down that way ;)

End of last week found 2m , ok hunting on the bottom, but not enough for spotting from the surface. Had very little time to line up shots and missed 2 bass.
Went to check shelter spots yesterday and they looked pretty poor from the cliffs. Bit of swell coming in now so I wouldn't expect it's improved.
If your keen and get shelter from the swell I expect it's doable under the murk with a short gun. Post back if u get in!

Hi everyone, I was sent here by Pav. Great little community. I'm living in Barnstaple and a keen surfer but trying to get into a few other sports. Just looking into getting some diving kit to get wet. Cheers all!

Hi guys

Up at Woolacombe for this weekend, anywhere to dive off of main beach, don't want to travel in car.
Thanks for any info.

Reef at the north end of the bay. Watch rip towards point. Do not under estimate! Rest of the bay is sand.

Hi All,
I am planning to go around Croyde this weekend. checking the waves forecast it look like will have 2-4 feets of waves and wind from W SW. this is the first time for me sperfishing in north Devon, Have you got any idea how the vis will be and a good shelter spot? Any way I will bring the surf just in case! thanks a lot! Marco

Hello
I'm sorry to say that there's been wind, rain and surf. If there are any of the 3 the vis tends to be very poor so theis combination doesn't sound good for spearing. Surf looks ok though !
Stu

Have to agree with Youngstu, vis will most likely be apalling, you'd be lucky to see past your hand!! Might get some calmer water in the lee of Hartland, around Clovelly, but in all honesty, surfing looks like the way to go! We've just had too much bad weather recently to have let the water clear... Better luck next time!

Thanks a lot for the information!I guess that the only fish that I will be able to see will be in a pub with chips and beer! Cheers

No problem mate, sorry we couldn't offer better weather! Pubs though... we can offer pubs...
